"TRUE IDOL"

Thursday, January 29, 2004
Don Fiorvento

While Canadian Idol was in town this week testing out pop star wannabes, Laurell Hubick was pondering a future based on the truth. It is a value that factors into everything the Vancouver Idol winner does, and partly why she won’t be climbing aboard the Canadian Idol juggernaut a second time around. The 24-year-old admits last spring’s experience was a lot of fun, but she started losing interest when she advanced and was told she could no longer sing her own original music but rather had to chose from a prepared list. “My songs are a real representation of my sound,” Hubick shares in a friendly, down to earth, cutesy kind of way as we sit in The North Shore Outlook office Monday morning.

A sound that she is imparting in two realms — the first of which is a recently released worship CD “Into Your Love.” Hubick, who sings regularly at North Shore Alliance church, says she had been considering releasing a worship oriented CD and a mainstream CD. But as a student in the jazz program at Capilano College, funds have been limited and she had decided that the mainstream CD would have to wait a while. Then out of the blue — or for the faith inclined, out of divine intervention — a church member called North Shore Alliance’s young adults minister and told him that they would like to pay for Hubick to put out a worship CD. The funds were provided through the In Him Foundation, and Hubick never knew the identity of the donors until the CD release party in November. “This whole fall felt like ‘Laurell, get on the roller coaster, put your hands up and ride it.’ It just kind of happened. Even the way the CD process got going, it was out of my hands.” It is a CD that comes straight from the heart, but lyrically plays more on her love for Jesus Christ and how much she values that spiritual relationship.

Her mainstream, as of yet untitled CD, due for release this summer, derives a lot of its content from Hubick’s personal relationships. “I have one about [my husband] Jamie, obviously an acknowledgement that this relationship isn’t perfect.” The lyrics, she notes, go:“Stay by my side, let’s walk this walk, let’s ride this ride.” They’re honest songs, Hubick contends. The lyrics don’t pretend to arrive at a resolution. “It just shows I’m a human, that I don’t always have it together. I’m not perfect, I get broken and hurt. It’s never about me being perfect, but I have a hope that is.” And while some of the more critical in her Christian faith may accuse her of selling out by producing a mainstream CD, Hubick says she has no qualms with what she is going. “I’m happy with fate taking its path and people hearing it who are meant to be hearing it,” she explains. The CDs are just a part of the spiritual and musical journey being unveiled before her. They are not, as of yet, part of some timeline she has laid out for success. “I still don’t necessarily have an arrival date or point in my mind. I just feel that I’m supposed to get better and I’m supposed to share it.” “Into Your Love” sold 452 copies at the CD release party and despite a lukewarm marketing effort on Hubick’s part thus far, is also moving well at Sign Of The Fish bookstore in Lower Lonsdale and via her website (www.laurell.ca).

The early numbers make her grin, but they aren’t as important to Hubick as the impact of her work and her spiritually-led desire to make a difference. “I think Christians are afraid of showing this imperfection and this pain because they see themselves as the example. But if we were to be a true example, I think honesty would be a key element.” An element she finds to be absent from the prepackaged pop images created just to sell music, like the kind Canadian Idol aspires to develop. “I just want to be known for who I am; as this person who’s not going to give you this image necessarily but the real deal,” Hubick shares. “I look at the influences on MuchMusic and I just think ‘Hey, if I have a chance to be a positive influence, then let’s do it.”

Hubick is counting on the belief that staying true to who she is will keep her from falling into the image trap: A trap that causes rising young artists to develop who they are based on the comments of critics: A trap that becomes so pervasive, it holds them emotionally captive. In her own way, even if she’s not consciously doing it, Hubick is imparting some Biblical wisdom: “The truth shall set you free.”

"CD IN REVIEW"

Canadian Idol may have been a gong-show for most would be ‘idols,’ (and even it’s eventual winner) but for at least one reject, Laurell Hubick, that cloud had a silver lining. After being booted from the top 100, Laurell was given the funds to produce a CD by an anonymous sponsor and, following her heart and passion, a worship album "Into Your Love" was created.

With the sweet, girl next-door image perfected and a voice that could dismiss any doubts about this “rejects” talent, Laurell lays her heart out on each and every track. "Into Your Love" is a truly honest expression of a soul longing for more of God. From her simple acoustic opener "What Happened To The Fun" to the rock driven "Worthy", this CD is filled with themes that resound in each of us. One of the highlights of this album, "Lift", challenges worship despite circumstance, with lines such as “All I have is from Your hands/And it’s yours to take away/I will lift Your name.” Each of the eleven songs on the album are filled with strong vocals and unforgettable melodies. Despite its humble creation, "Into Your Love" is both professionally performed and produced; there’s no “cheap factor” production quality, evident on many indie products.
A sincere collection of heartfelt devotion, Laurell’s music is peaceful and refreshing. With beautifully controlled vocal varieties, and songs that make you keep them on repeat, this album is definitely a must have addition to any worship collection.

"REVIEW"

North Vancouver’s Laurell Hubick has quickly emerged as one of Canada’s premier Christian recording artists. Our fan-based judging panels were so impressed with Laurell’s sophomore release, "Into Your Love", that she was nominated for four Vibe Awards in 2004, the second highest total of any artist in the country. The disc was nominated for both Inspirational and Worship Album of the Year, while Laurell also found herself in contention for Female Soloist of the Year. Meanwhile, her composition "Great I AM" won the award for Song of the Year in the event which saw more than 10,000 fans from throughout Canada cast ballots over the Internet and through participating retailers.
I am also a producer and host of , a weekly radio program on AM 1140 heard throughout southern and central Alberta. Laurell’s music has been featured on the show on a number of occasions and will continue to get airplay in the future. Her talents as a songwriter and performer are clearly evident and her music both lyrically and sonically compelling.
Having had the opportunity to meet and interview Laurell in Toronto this spring, I can recommend her with confidence to others. I greatly appreciated her openness, transparency and deep commitment to her faith in Christ. Laurell’s spirited, bubbly personality is truly infectious. - VIBE AWARDS

"Hear what BRIAN DOERKSEN has to say"

Laurell’s CD “Into Your Love” is one of my top 10 CDs of the last year (in any genre!). What an amazing voice, and what a gifted songwriter! I endorse very few people, but she is one who I recommend without hesitation! If Laurell is coming anywhere near you, do yourself a big favour and drop everything, grab your friends and go! You will not be disappointed! I had the privilege of hosting a concert with Laurell recently, and was amazed once again at her voice (even better than the CD if you can believe that!) and encouragement as she shared her heart and connected with everyone! Her music is honest yet uplifting, transparent yet God focused, and she is one of those rare people that has the gift and depth to touch all generations!

"Mill Creek Concert Review"

Recently we had the privilage of hosting Laurell and her band at our church for a coffee house concert. We wanted to have a evening of great entertainment that we could invite anyone to, even if they weren't "church folk". Our small crowd of just under 100, was blown away by Laurell's voice and musicianship. Laurell and the band were outstanding and made the evening one we will remember for a very long time. Laurell has so much raw talent, musical ability and very strong writing skills, she is definately someone we will be hearing about alot in the future. Any church that can book her should, I know we will be asking them back!

"Zion Baptist Edmonton Review"

It was a privilege to host one of Laurell's shows on her current cross-country tour. Hers is an exquisite voice and as a song writer, her lyrics touch the deep places of the human heart while somehow managing to describe the indescribable places where angels tread. All this talent--yet with a complete lack of pretence--only confirms that Laurell possesses an important gift to be shared with anyone who's got a moment to listen.

"HUBICK’S MUSIC INVITES LISTENER TO JOIN HER ON A WIDE-EYED JOURNEY"

BRIAN VOS
NOVEMBER 5TH, 2004

On the evening of Nov 3, 2004, the new Students' Association Centre (SAC) was glowing with the vocal stylings of B.C. based singer/songwriter Laurell Hubick.

The SAC was packed with eager concertgoers from the college, and from the community as well.
Third year student Trixie Ling was very excited about the turnout, especially among non-Kings people.

This was the first concert to be held in the SAC. Hubick and her band were persuaded to add The King's University College as a venue on her Canadian tour after Lisa Teigen, Student Life Assistant, saw her concert at Zion Baptist Church a few weeks prior, and asked them to come back to King's before they left Alberta.

King's own Jane Erickson opened for Hubick with a scrumptious fusion of two songs: "All creatures of our God and king" and "I can see clearly now".

Despite bashful claims of being "a bad piano player", Erickson charmed the crowd with her rich voice and more than adequate piano skills.

Jane played a few of her own songs, including "How can it be?" and a moving song written just last week, inspired by her reading of Psalm 40, titled "Heard my cry".

Hubick's sound is a blend of jazz, funk, pop, and acoustic music: her enchanting combination of thoughtful lyrics and inventive melodies fills the listener with expectation and hope.

Hubick's songs ranged from songs of confession and brokeness, evident in the lyrics of "Cut through", to love songs that she wrote for her husband (and sound man), Jamie Hubick, including "In the air" and "Stay by my side".

Between songs Hubick shared a bit of her story and her faith journey, a journey that the listener was invited to join her on through her music.

According to Laurell's website, www.laurell.ca, her first CD, 'Into your love,' " is a collection of songs written by a wide-eyed journeyer in discovery of God's character."

Many of the songs shared at the concert came from Hubick's newest album, 'The Fool in Me,' which was released earlier this fall.

Hubick refers to this album as her first mainstream CD. She felt a calling to release an album that would be able to "meet people where they are at".

Her raw, honest lyrics clearly communicate this goal. Hubick’s songs are personal and exude an honesty that cannot be fabricated. Student response indicated that this goal was met:
"[the concert] was very moving and inspiring," said English student, Ellen Lyzenga.
Sarah Zomer, said the concert, and one song in particular left her feeling "suspended in time".
Students demonstrated their enthusiasm for the music as they lined up after the concert to buy Hubick’s CDs and chat with the band.

In addition to the new songs, Hubick and the band also played one of the first songs she ever wrote, called "lovely day", saying, "since we've been on the road we have been bringing things back from the dead…like old songs".

In addition to being a a perfect way to christen the new SAC, the night was a lovely respite for students from the busyness of exams and papers.

Keep watching for more from the up-and-coming Hubick, as well as from King's own Erickson.

Bio

“I write songs for a lot of reasons, after an experience that’s impacted me, or to express something to God, or for fun…sometimes for therapy…in any case, it’s just an honest expression of where I’m at.”

IT WAS A DIM CAFÉ ON THE NORTH SHORE, AND A YOUNG GIRL WAS UP ON THE TINY STAGE, playing for the crowd of style kids and hipsters that were filling the place on a sparkling Vancouver Thursday night. At most of those café shows, people are more into their conversations and their lattes and cheesecakes than into the music, but the place was dead quiet, everyone just totally taken away by the girl up there with the gorgeous, fragile voice. The crowd there knew that girl was something special, and now, five years later, Laurell’s music is continuing to catch people’s breath in their throats.
Now 25 years old, the B.C.-based singer / songwriter Laurell Hubick has become one of those rare artists who can draw from the mainstream, the sacred and the purely musical and turn out music that’s honest and unique, full of conviction and free of artifice. Coming off the recent release of “Into Your Love,” a collection of 11 original worship songs, and with a mainstream album in the works, Laurell is one of Canada’s brightest young talents, and certainly one of its purest voices.
With formal training in Jazz Studies at North Vancouver’s Capilano College, Laurell has been honing her skills as a songwriter since the age of six, when impromptu fireplace performances for her family made it clear which path she’d be going down in life. Laurell’s credits include winning the North Vancouver Battle of the Bands as a solo act in 1998, being named the “Vancouver Idol,” and making the top 100 in the nation-wide singer search “Canadian Idol” in 2003, 4 nominations at the 2004 Vibe Awards, and winner of “song of the year” at the 2004 Vibe Awards. “Great I AM” is receiving national radio play throughout Canada, and will be on two nationally distributed compilation albums to be released this fall. She has received widespread media coverage on BCTV, CTV, VTV and Rogers Cable, and in the Vancouver Sun, the North Shore News and the North Shore Outlook. Laurell’s talents have also earned her scholarships from Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music. Over the years, one of the major inspirations for Laurell’s music has been her passionate faith. As her love for God has increased, so has her passion for the gift of music, and her reflections on simple, real truths are a breath of fresh air. Music is a holy thing, a prayerful thing, a way of saying the things of the heart. “I believe it’s one reason God created music,” Laurell says. “It amplifies His voice when our ears are deaf to it, and it’s one of my greatest joys to partake in it, especially now that I know the One who created and inspires it.” From curious melodies and convicting passion to softer glimpses of wisdom and truth, Laurell’s songs are both an expression of her holy loves and an invitation into a higher world. As one critic has said, “it draws you into a unique place. She projects her reflection on life experience, God’s voice in that experience, and her conversations with God. And you can’t help but be drawn into that experience.” In November 2003, Laurell released her second CD, “Into Your Love.” Many of the songs, featuring Laurell’s accomplished songwriting and unique, jazz-inflected voice, were played live before a captivated audience of 400 at Vancouver’s North Shore Alliance Church. Over 500 units were snatched up in its debut weekend alone. This new album from one of Canada’s purest talents is a picture of the struggles, devotions and loves of a life of faith, and a diary of Laurell’s heart over the last 5 years. You will be inspired, and as one fan put it, “the CD will not leave your player for long.”
