"Lauren Desberg – Sideways"

Faites vous le plaisir de redécouvrir You go to my head (Rendue célèbre par Billie Holiday), Spring is here (Rodgers & Hart), Mister magic (Grover Washington Jr.’s) et Come running to me (Herbie Hancock).

:) - Sound Shaker

"Top 10 On The Jazzy Side: 2012"

2012 without a doubt, was dominated by greatness from the young lions in the world of jazz. Artist like Robert Glasper, Christian Scott, Jose James and Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding found their way to prime time TV performing on late nights shows including David Letterman Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Something that hasn’t been done consistently since the last days of Miles Davis. With this, the world got a chance to experience and discover a league of young musicians defying the standard and taking this seemingly dying artform into their clutches & giving it new life.
Some with swing, some with beats and some got a little funky. Like the greats before them, they did it their way and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This was the absolute hardest list for me to narrow down but here’s my list for the Top 10 albums on the jazzy side of life.
Robert Glasper – Black Radio
Gregory Porter – Be Good
Vijay Iyer – Accelerando
Darryl Reeves – Mercury
Khari Cabral – Clementine Sun
Esperanza Spalding – Radio Music Society
Erimaj – Conflict Of A Man
Christian Scott – Christian a Tunde Adjuah
Jesse Fischer & Soul Cycle – Retro Future
Tatiana Mayfield – A Portrait Of Ladymay
Honorable Mentions

Lauren Desberg – Sideways
Chris Turner – The Monk Tape - Kevin Nottingham

- Now Playing

"Lauren Desberg – Sideways EP [Download]"

Somehow I missed the exquisite jazz and sublime vocals housed on this EP when it first debuted this past September.

So when I ran across it while (s)trolling on FB the other night, and saw Gretchen Parlato’s name associated with the EP, it was a no-brain for me to take a listen to the opening track, “You Go To My Head“.

Parlato and Desberg do an incredible job on the 1938 Fred J. Coots jazz standard, made popular by Billie Holiday before being recorded by a host of other artists and the pairing of their voices here is in such precise tandem, it would take someone extremely familiar with Parlato’s inflections to aurally separate the two.

Never think that Desberg is unable to hold her own for the remaining three tracks. Far from it, as the Berklee School of Music alum and her ensemble are more than capable of delivering, with tracks ranging from a subdued but refreshing take on Grover Washington Jr.’s oft sampled “Mister Magic” to the Dilla sampled Herbie Hancock staple, “Come Running To Me“.

Truly good listening right here that you can either get on the NYP basis at Desberg’s Bandcamp or you can straight up support the art at iTunes or Amazon. - Bama Love Soul

"Lauren Desberg (feat. Gretchen Parlato) - 'Sideways' (2012)"

Sideways' to debiutancka mini-plyta mlodej amerykanskiej wokalistki Lauren Desberg.
W nagraniu wzieli udzial ponadto: Dayna Stephens (saksofon tenorowy), Taylor Eigsti (pianino), Chris Smith i Josh Crumbly (gitary basowe) oraz Corey Fonville (perkusja).
Plyty mozna posluchac w calosci w odtwarzaczu ponizej. - Jazz Café

"LAUREN DESBERG “Sideways”"

Mal wieder was aus Jazz. Lauren Desberg singt.

"Lauren Desberg: Sideways"

Berklee College Of Music and its alum are wreaking much needed havoc on the current jazz scene. The latest alum to bring the pain is singer Lauren Desberg. Last week she debuted her EP Sideways, which came anything but. On this four tracker, the singer craft the freshest spin and heavenly arrangements on Herbie “Come Running To Me,” Grover Washington Jr‘s classic “Mister Magic,” Rodgers & Hart‘s standard “Spring Is Here” and the classic “You Go To My Head“. To see this through, she enlisted the help of singer Gretchen Parlato who’s last album made it to every reputable Best Of 2011 jazz list. With Gretchen donning the producer cap (and guest vocals on one track) and a band consisting of Taylor Eigsti, Kris Bowers, Dayna Stephens, Corey Fonville and Chris Smith, how can it not be the dopest shit ever? This will for sure be on my Best of 2012 list. - Kevin Nottingham

"Go 'Sideways' With Lauren Desberg"

The name Lauren Desberg provoked a head scratch, but after taking in her Sideways EP, we are strangers no more. The Berklee School of Music alum flexes her jazz know-how as the Sideways tracklist plays like a who's who of jazz's greatest instrumentalists and standards, with Desberg schooling us and smooth operating over some mighty big classics. What really got the eyebrow raised was her take on Grover Washington Jr.'s classic, "Mister Magic." Even though Desberg cuts out the mid-'70's groove of the original, with her Snuggle soft vocals she follows Amy Winehouse's lyrical blueprint of the track and puts such a warm spin on it that it's hard to brush off its lush rapture. Herbie Hancock's "Come Running To Me" and Rodgers & Hart's "Spring Is Here" are also re-fashioned and present on this chic affair. Desberg doesn't share this space alone, as along with her band, she also is joined by singer and Sideways producer Gretchen Parlato on "You Go To My Head" and the two just vocally waltz all over it. It is evident from first note that Desburg is for those who like their jazz straight-up with no chasers but all class act. So take five and hop over to Desburg's Bandcamp page to name your price for Sideways. With one listen, you'll be glad you walked in her direction. - Soulbounce

"Lauren Desberg Releases 'Sideways' EP"

I'm amazed at the palpable excitement that surrounds vocalist Lauren Desberg. We've mentioned her here before to overwhelmingly exuberant fanfare. The Berklee School of Music student is making waves and has corralled the talents of folks like saxophonist Dayna Stephens, pianist Taylor Eigsti, vocalist Gretchen Parlato, bassist Chris Smith, drummer Corey Fonville, pianist/arranger Kris Bowers, and others for her pay-what-you-want EP which just released today. Her cool vocals and these sweet arrangements are definitely worth a listen and your support. - Nextbop

"You Go To My Head"

I'm a sucker for "You Go To My Head". It's one of those jazz standards that melts me when it's pulled off right. Vocalist Lauren Desberg has pulled this off. The arrangement by young pianist of the moment, Kris Bowers, also features Gretchen Parlato duetting with Desberg, Taylor Eigsti on piano, Dayna Stephens on tenor sax (who are key components in the dream team that made up Parlato's The Lost and Found of last year), Josh Crumbly on bass, and Corey Fonville on drums.

Desberg and Parlato's vocals meld together well-- a wonderful joining of clear, understated tones. The Bowers arrangement swell by the closing, something that Louie and Oscar never did (even though, I mean, come on, it's the definitive version [don't bring Billie Holiday into this, we'll fight like that scene in Corrina, Corinna), that really pulls this whole thing together (which is a lot like Robert Glasper's arrangements on the aforementioned TLaF, great minds think alike). It's a great song and definitely worth a listen. Desberg should now officially be on your radar. - Nextbop
