Quotes:

"A testimony to the human spirit"

"A huge musical and cultural performance"

"Beautiful, it restores a faith in mankind"

- X-Press Magazine, Australia

The Laya Project brings together the music of these regions, fusing their musical styles, melding them while still maintaining the integrity of the individual traditions.

It’s interesting that traditional music, even though it's so ancient, can be in many ways new. It would take more than a lifetime to explore the world’s music, but we should try to hear as much as we can.

- Drum Media, Australia

Bio

Laya Project Live! is an eclectic live show featuring 24 international artists interpreting the music of Laya Project, an award-winning documentary celebrating the music and cultural traditions of 6 countries (Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Maldives) affected by the 2004 Asian Tsunami.

The show combines traditional and contemporary world music ranging from traditional folk songs to Buddhist chanting, East-West fusion to entrancing Sufi songs, explosive tribal percussions to subtle electronica and Indian classical music, accompanied by breathtaking visuals from the documentary. The show is around 90 minutes + encore.

EarthSync is a music label and audio-visual production house based in Chennai, South India, with operations in Israel, the UK, North America and Australia. The company is committed to nurturing folk, tribal and native music – the root music through which cultures express themselves across time.

A team of sound engineers and camera men travelled for 2 years through Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar and India collecting the material that was then mixed and arranged at EarthSync’s Clementine Studio to become Laya Project (2 audio CDs and 1 feature-length documentary DVD). Laya Project is a personal and collective musical tribute to the resilience of the human spirit, and is dedicated to the survivors of the tsunami.

Laya Project Live! showcases unearthed talents from around the region truly collaborating on stage, and has toured to huge acclaim in India and abroad in places such as Israel and Australia. In February 2009, Laya Project Live! was the opening event of the Perth International Arts Festival, performing in front of 5000 people at the oldest annual international multi-arts festival in the southern hemisphere.
