The Video:
From the first frame to the last, only one word can aptly describe the debut video from hip-hop group League510: par-tay. In this new school meets old school house party, there is not a single person without drink in hand, moving to the single “I’m On.” While 40 oz. towers of Old English and St. Ides, army wear, shaved heads, and low-riders may have gone by the wayside, backyard BBQ and dominoes have stuck around.
The Background:
Emcee’s TK, Mont, Mr. Knowitall and DJ Blacksmith better known as League510 are pioneers of a sound that is all their own, Town Techno. With a sound that is out of this world, League510’s musical journey began in a galaxy far away from ours... - HotIndieNews.com
Town techno may be the Bay Area's most exciting new music genre. It takes hip-hop's basis of beats and rhymes, filters them through an uptempo techno influence, and then liberally swathes it all with synthesizer riffs. The music's foremost proponent is League510, a quartet whose backstory has the members beaming down from outer space and landing in Oakland. League510's early anthem, "To the Beat," is propelled by burnished synth lines, frenzied hi-hat patterns, and a chorus that comes over like a futuristic aerobics instructor when it commands, "We're moving and grooving to the beat." But what sets town techno apart from other regional musical movements is that it's a scene you cannot yet physically experience. If you were cynical, you might wonder whether it exists at all — and at least in the traditional sense, it doesn't.

Each week, mtvU's Freshmen 5 competition gives viewers the power to determine which up-and-coming artist will have their music video injected into rotation on mtvU. Starting today, September 21, Clear Label Records group League510 goes toe-to-toe against four others with their new video, "I'm On." Equipped with a video sure to be right at home on a network directed towards kids on college campuses across the nation, League510's video which can only be described by one word: par-tay.

It says a great deal about League510's appeal that they've developed a lot of attention without ever having released a debut album. Comprised of emcees of TK, Mont, Mr. Knowitall, and their DJ, Blacksmith, League510 have already made a name for themselves on the strengths of the few singles that they've released. The group is at the forefront of a self-designed and self-titled sound they refer to as "town techno," and their first nationally released example of this sound, 'I'm On,' landed them in heavy rotation on mtvU. You can imagine what kind of notice the group will receive when their first album is actually released. The members of League510 sat down with Spinner to discuss SXSW, their formation, the roots of town techno, and when their first full-length album will finally see the light of day - www.spinner.com
Everyone was so quiet this week in the comments section. Speak up! Even if you’re not digging this round of the Freshmen, please let us know why. League 510 brought in the most votes to take the win, their video will be added into on-air rotation next week, with Saigon coming in a close second. I am surprised that there wasn’t more support for The Temper Trap, but perhaps they were giving someone else a chance after their whirl-wind summer. Don’t forget to have a great weekend and check back in on Monday for more artists; a new chance to vote, comment, and support your favorite. In the meantime, follow me and mtvU on Twitter for musical updates - www.mtvu.com
Moving to a new place can feel like coming to a new planet, at least that's what it's been like for League510, who says they're from... outerspace. Producing a sound they've coined as "Town Techno" and ditching their "spaceship" in the Oakland Hills, they've released the video for the first single off From the Beat. The video shows the band in bold, neon video game colors as they take over S.F. and Oakland Godzilla-style but with laser guns and nunchucks... BART nunchucks. At the 3:00 minute mark, watch grimy BART get tossed around.
