Leaving Ellis began as a solo venture. Singer/songwriter Stephen Chambers wrote a handful of songs and wanted to record an EP. He sought out local bass player and friend, Michael Hackman, and drummer, Jared Hoffmann, out of Kansas City MO. Chambers knew Hoffmann through other local bands and also through Hackman (Hoffmann is Hackman's nephew.).
For several months the guys worked up Chambers' songs. They went into the studio in February of 2009. The recording process took nearly five months due to busy schedules and session cancellations. In the meantime, they still held practice sessions and worked on new material.
When mixdown of the EP began, the trio knew this was more than a recording project and decided not only to release an EP, but to play shows as well. After several weeks, the group officially became a band, and after much deliberation decided on a name: Leaving Ellis.
