Leceda

Leceda was formed during 2005 in the city of Toronto by close friends Linda Noh and Eunice Yoo. Bonding through the music of U2, the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cure, the two childhood friends had collaborated on creating music for some time before they decided to form an official band. Actively performing at open mics and coffee houses and participating in several “Best Of” showcases, Linda and Eunice decided to pursue a rhythm section to further develop their sound. Tim Muirhead, bassist for infamous Toronto band Boygina and active member of the local music community agreed to take on drum duties, adding a frenetic energy to the compositions that was both fresh and inspiring. A serendipitous encounter led to the acquisition of bass player Robin Jull who conveniently happened to be on hiatus from his other music project. Robin introduced a laid back groove to the music and easily adapted to the eclectic songwriting with his unassuming bass lines and experimental approach that truly completed Leceda’s sound. With Eunice on vocals and guitar, Linda on vocals and keyboard, Tim on drums and Robin on bass, Leceda was born.

Though the music of Leceda has its roots in the classic pop of the 60’s, it is equally informed by the punk attitude of the 70’s, the new waves of the 80’s and the fringe experimentation of the 90’s. Saddled with the current decade, one that has seen the endless invention of tiresome hipster sub genres and recycled trends, it would be no surprise if the music hinted at above yielded a derivative pap with no substance beyond what it had pirated from the many amazing musical offerings of the past. Fortunately this is not the case. Though Leceda’s signature style is distinguished by rich vocal harmonies and keyboard-driven melodies the band does not shy away from subverting conventional song structure even while flirting with it. This enables the music to straddle several genres, allowing it to appear as comfortable when played next to choral ensembles as it would contemporary synthesized pop and punk rock. When the four members collective energy comes together the result is a raw, exciting sound that distinctly blends the songwriters’ classical training with its appreciation of contemporary popular influences.

Leceda is currently performing live in Toronto at venues such as the El Mocambo, Clinton’s and The Boat. The band has recorded a three song demo produced by Dan Johnson, singer-songwriter for Flameshovel’s Judah Johnson. They are preparing to expand this demo into a full-length album over the next year.
