Tyrells Niece with Leela Grant ~If a love orgy of Al Green,Rita Hayworth,P- Funk and Rogers&Hammerstein produced a love child- Leela would be it.Leela Grant sang before she talked and her first words weren't just words-they were lyrics.As a little girl growing up in a house full of music( her mom was a dancer , dad a musician and brother a singer/lyricist sidekick)she was encouraged to explore and express herself through art-writing-singing-composing- dancing and creating vibrant multiple characters and stories thru song,theatrics & fantasy.Being the "strange fat girl with the jew fro" had it's advantages-like being told by many a drama teacher that she would never get a lead role -not a problem just learn all of the parts in the musicals and play as many different characters as possible ! Her love and knowledge of Broadway musicals has a definite influence on her music along with Bowie,Funkadelic, the Pretenders,Rosemary Clooney,Julie London,Devo and the Beastie Boys. Being in the "A " crowd , let alone the "B " crowd was not of interest to her creative achievements or adventures-and the cult following that showed up after school and then to shows&clubs for her improvisational,musical shows are never disappointed.
Creating is her uninhibited joy "My performances are interactive-the shows/music transports you to a unique place-the place you live in as a child-a creative,humorous,dark world -without vanity-a better place ."Though having written hundreds of original songs-Please don't call her a singer/songwriter-she's no folksinger .Leela dreams up delicious dramas that come to life through her music & she is the sole creator/producer of her art on all levels-music,lyrics,melodies etc.Her funky,groovy ,late-night sensual,theatrical,quirky,long deep kissing music is here for you~so groove on baby.
