AN up-and-coming Dublin band is set to swap the garden shed for a muddy field this month when they play at the prestigious Glastonbury festival.

Legion of Ape is set to become the name on everyone's lips, with the Dublin band set for a make-or-break performance at the biggest music event of the year.

Lead singer James Edwards (22) and his drummer brother Brian (25) started the band two years ago in the garden shed. They were soon joined by bassist John Quinn (25) and began making a name for themselves by performing a number of gigs around Dublin.

And despite the fact that they have yet to release a single or sign to a record company, their talent caught the attentions of Glastonbury organisers. The trio are now booked to play on the Friday evening of the massive event, on June 28, a move that could prove a major springboard for their career.

James told the Herald: "It's a fairly big leap, from Eamon Doran's to Glastonbury. It hasn't really sunk in yet and we're not nervous yet but we're all excited".

He added: "We've had plenty of congratulations from other bands. Maybe there's a bit of back-stabbing but thankfully we haven't come across it!"

Later this month, James, Brian and John will be putting thoughts of their day jobs to one side as they head to England for their moment on the big stage.

It's a long way from the band's humble beginnings in the garden shed.

James explained: "It started when myself and my brother went down to the garden shed and began practising there. We'd both been in bands before that hadn't worked out. Then John came on board and here we are".

This summer, Legion of Ape are also booked to play a number of festivals. And they'll also be releasing their debut single in a bid to boost their growing fanbase.

However, the musicians are now focusing all their energies on their big moment on the Leftfield Stage at Glastonbury.

They'll certainly be in exalted company, with Kings of Leon, The Verve and Jay-Z among the headline acts. Shakin' Stevens, Leonard Cohen and Gilbert O'Sullivan have all been confirmed, while troubled singer Amy Winehouse will also be making an appearance.
