The best kept secret in music

"Leif James"

Writing and performing his original material since age sixteen, Leif James took his guitar across the United States for seven years playing streets, cafes and any other venue that would have him. He is new to the Ithaca scene but has already become a fixture, playing regular gigs at the Rongo and other venues. Mixing his love for the improvisational styles of Ben Harper, Jerry Garcia and Karl Denson with the lyrical prowess of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, Leif has added these influences to his own palette of rich and textured songs. Perhaps Leif’s most striking asset, though, is his powerful and original voice that reminds one of a young Tom Waits, although softer in tone but equally as powerful and heartfelt. He is frequently joined onstage by members of the Leif James “family”, as he is very generous in frequently brining up guest musicians to sing and play with. Leif just loves to perform and it appears that his growing following will ensure that he always has a place to play and feel welcome here in I-town. Says Leif, “There is nothing more enlightening or satisfying than sharing your soul with an audience.”

James’ need for creative expression has led him on a path through the musical world on which he has become an extraordinarily original songwriter, and he has developed a truly unique voice, the combination of which is enough to make the listener's skin tingle. And his melange of bluegrass, funk, rock, and jazz roots combine to make even the most passive audience want to get up and dance.

"HIV network plans Sunday candlelight memorial in Norwich"

Norwich - Matt Asma of planned parenthood...said he selected musician Leif James to provide entertainment because of the former Hamilton musician's propensity to get involved in such causes.
"I noticed that he had played in Norwich in the past for orphans of HIV and AIDS," said Asma. "I liked his music and liked his sound and asked him if he would be interested."
James, who is now an Orbital Sound recording artists living in Ithaca, said he's performed for AIDS benefits before because..."People don't get involved until they can't turn their head anymore," said James. "I refuse to be one of those people who turn their head so they don't have to deal with it anymore."
James said he'd like to foster a community that supports people with AIDS, not segregates them.
"If I was in that position, I would be very thankful if people came out and supported me," he said.

In that time Leif has received special mention by RadioDevil.com for his artistic efforts and dedication to the One World Beat Project in helping to raise awareness and funds for children with HIV/AIDS. The sounds of his early musical upbringing in his rural New England home had a chance to percolate with other influences when he traveled the United States for 7 years with his guitar. He cut his teeth playing the streets to survive, and then quickly progressed to paying gigs. He made his way through an assortment of bands, none of which could fulfill the need in his soul to create original music that actually sounded original, and not like some other artists recycled material. After a few frustrating years playing guitar and singing in bands, James has opted to devote himself to performing as a solo artist, with occasional accompaniment. Not wanting to put out poppy numbers, which could easily boost him to financial success, he opts to sing and play from the heart, as he feels, “There is nothing more enlightening or satisfying than sharing your soul with an audience.”

When asked to name his main musical influences, Leif James will talk of his love for; the sublime styling and passion of Ben Harper, the unconventional and compelling compositions of Tom Waits, the intense songwriting and melodies of The Drive By Truckers and Ryan Adams, the improvisational breakthroughs of Jerry Garcia, the surreal and impeccable timing of Jerry Garcia and Leo Kotke, the insatiable grooves of Karl Denson and the word-smithing of Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. But what he hears most when listening to his favorite artists is, “Play from the heart!” He has certainly heeded this advice, quickly learning to compose original songs at the age of 16. James soon realized that he was a born songwriter, often playing gigs featuring only his own compositions.
