"Bones Review"

(Singer-songwriter) "Bones" Leif Olsen, independent recording

Fowler High School math teacher Leif Olsen added the drum work of Syracuse percussionist Elizabeth Strodel to his guitars and vocals for his second CD.

To sum up "Bones," it's a compelling collection of nine Olsen originals that ranges confidently from singer-songwriter subtleties into the loud and proud world of let-it-hang-out rock.

Strodel's beats add depth and guts to Olsen's ringing strings and clear vision.

He can lovingly sing the love song "Perfect" and get sultry on the blues waltz "I Never Wanted."

The best work comes on the title cut, which takes on an expansive, "Uncle John's Band" jam feel, happy and satisfied, as Olsen sings, "If you could take one day to live again, would you erase your wrongs and make amends. Or would you take some bright and sunny day, to live a joy that was and try to stay?"

LEIF OLSEN SHOWCASES POETRY ON NEW ACOUSTIC ALBUM

Author: MARK BIALCZAK MUSIC CRITIC

For a Syracuse high school math teacher, Leif Olsen is one heck of a singer-songwriter.

Who says algebra and poetry don't mix?
With his pure voice, acoustic guitar and a couple of harmonicas, Olsen proves that less can be very fulfilling.

(Acoustic rock-folk) "Disbelief," Leif Olsen, independent recording

Olsen's words outline vivid imagery. Some of it is pretty, but much of his poet lyricism is stark.

The CD, recorded to fine effect at Castle Studio in Utica, starts with an affair of the heart. In "Hey Stranger," Olsen sings, "Why'd you have to walk back in my life? I tell you, I'm fine. I hope you don't see through my smile." The stone heart echoes with a bit of country twang in his guitar.

To chill, Olsen gets down with "Evel Knievel." "Won't you put me out of my misery? I'd do it for you, won't you do it for me?" he pleads.

Catch a show: Olsen performs at 10 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, 246 W. Willow St., Syracuse.
