"MP3: Leisure Suit – Distraction"

Silky smoothness from Victoria’s excellently named Leisure Suit. As well as having one of the most exciting band names in Canada today, Leisure suit have a an understated charm, an adventurous sonic palette and a vocalist who sits somewhere between Paul Banks and Erlend Øye. Also a slick website. - Silent Shout

"Leisure Suit "Distraction""

Vancouver Island band Leisure Suit haven't dropped a new release in two years, but now they've followed up their 2011 self-titled EP with a new single called "Distraction."

This mellow rock cut was self-produced and self-recorded before being mixed by BC studio whiz Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, the Pornographers). It features a gentle arrangement nestled within a cloud of nocturnal ambience. In an email, the band described the song as sounding like "Interpol meet Deerhunter on the west coast." Check it out below. - Exclaim.ca

"Leisure Suit – The Chapel Sessions"

If you don't know Leisure Suit by now, you should. The four piece genre straddling band sits somewhere on the more melodic edge of the post-rock spectrum. The result is a highly texturized, misleadingly pallatable sound.

When we caught up with frontman Oliver Brooks in March, Leisure Suit were fresh off their (fantastic) first release, the Leisure Suit EP. It's nice to hear some new sounds mixed in, particularly when backdropped by such a gorgeous setting. - Mosaic

"Mike Noble of Young Pacific’s Top 10 Moments at Rifflandia (Mostly)"

I was recommended Leisure Suit by my good pal Ethan from The Archers, and I was not let down. The best way I can describe them would be if Modest Mouse and Explosions in the Sky had a lovechild that grew up listening to Joy Division. Sounds pretty good, right? - Red on Black

"Review: Rifflandia 2012"

The four-piece outfit Leisure Suit is indigenous to Victoria, and play a style of music that technically falls under the shoegaze umbrella, but in practice touches on a wide variety of genres. Lead singer Oliver Brooks’ voice had a unique quality to it; both deadpan and expressive all at once, it meshes perfectly with the rest of the band’s technical style. Their songs were both loud and quiet at the same time, both flowing and crashing. Simple riffs and beats crescendoed effortlessly into something far more complex than the sum of their parts. Probably one of the coolest moments in the show was The Whale Song, during which Brooks pulled out a drumstick and bowed it across the strings of his guitar to create an ethereal, haunting noise strangely similar to the sound of the song’s namesake. Filled to the brim with creativity, talent, and super solid bass riffs, Leisure Suit is definitely a band to keep an eye on. - Scene in the Dark

"Leisure Suit – Leisure Suit EP"

It doesn’t really stop with Victoria does it? I stumbled upon some more noteworthy delights—this time in the form of some careful and cathartic organic compositions from an elusive outfit called Leisure Suit. You will find the musical dynamic of these songs to be a rhapsodizing deluge of beauty. The imagery these songs impute is vivid, lyrics aside. This album could easily hold the attention as an instrumental piece alone. But that is not to say the content of Leisure Suit’s eponymous EP is at all wanting. The vocal quality alone levitates with such an austere inside-your-headphones quality that seems to isolate you in a small chamber with room enough for only you and the song. Hopefully they find their way to Edmonton and continue to drop albums of this creative aptitude. - Argue Job

"Rifflandia 2012"

The first band I caught happened to be performing in a church that has been transformed into an “adjectives can not due me justice” music conservatory/performance hall (Alix Goolden Hall). It was a pretty incredible thing to walk into. The band I witnessed wasn’t too bad either. In fact, I think they were pretty darn fantastic. Leisure Suit remind me of a pleasant cross between Sound Team (I fucking love this band!), Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah with minimal amounts of The Sea and Cake. Basically numerous bands with connecting words in their title. They put on the type of performance I felt fortunate to be a part of. Even though everyone was seated I still felt alive. There were times where they produced sounds that made me feel like I was watching large icebergs melt at race car pace, captured by the slight hands of time-lapse cinematography. Other times I felt like I was in a dark lounge where nobody wanted to talk to me. Sometimes life is like that. It’s alright because the music is a good, silent accomplice in crimes not yet done. The last song Leisure Suit played was a brand new song they had never played publicly before. If they hadn’t announced that prior to beginning the number, nobody in the ocean blue lit room would have noticed. They ended the powerful closer to a standing ovation. I imagine the extra enthusiastic audience appreciation wasn’t solely taking place because nobody was standing before the set ended. Seattle, I sincerely think you’ll like this band. If you can click on their name, you can download their self-titled EP for free (or you can be a good human and make a generous donation). - Sound on the Sound
