"Mama's Blues Joint"

MAMA'S BLUES JOINT
Mama's Blues Joint

Mamas Records:
Produced by Lene Strøyer/André Sørensen

I played this album without looking at the cover and believed,

because of the name, that the band was American and,

because of the vocals, that it was fronted by a well-schooled

black female singer. The production sounded American and
even the Stevie Wonder styled harmonica on 'Happy Dude' and

the horn section on 'This Ain't Love' all contrived to add to that
belief. Imagine my surprise, then, when I discovered that the
vocalist in question is a young lady called Lene Stroyer and that
the band is Danish!

Nine tracks are all Stroyer originals and excellent quality they are, too.
The best is probably 'How Many
Times', a beautiful love song. In fact, matters of the heart are a
consistent theme throughout, with titles like 'The Love That I
Gave You', 'I'm Missing You' and 'My Heart Will Speak'.
Styles range from ballads through slow Blues to out and out rockers,
such as 'Mama Told Me'.
Willie Dixon's 'Spoonful' gets an outing
with a full sounding brass section livening up the whole,
with the fat sounding Hammond organ adding its' chunky
sound.Thefunky 'NoExceptionToTheRule'would make a good dance track at any party. Throughout, Stroyer is backed
by a very tight four-piece, with added horn section on many of the
numbers. A good introduction to Danish Blues..

"Ladies Sing the Blues"

LADIES SIN G THE BLUES
Uh Oh Yeah!

ladiessingtheblues.dk

Denmark sings the Blues. and does a fine job. Put together in
2001 by the board of The Copenhagen Blues Festival. to
encourage more women on the local Blues scene, the band
has become an established act. This album is full of fairly light,
foot tapping smile-on·yer-face numbers.
About half are selfpenned and with titles like 'Cold Pizza& Warm Beer' and 'Have
You Tried It In The Bush',
you know it should be fun.

There is a good balance

maintained by some very

credible covers, which

include Etta James'

'Something's Got A Hold an
Me. Willie Dixon's 'I Love
The Life I Live' and
Marva

Wright's 'Let's Make Love'.

A six-piece band fronted by

three powerful female
vocalists, who individually
provide some excellent solo performances and together beautiful
harmonies.
The three accomplished male musicians are
never overly intrusive and provide a tight, easy sounding, laidback
feel that compliments the vocals well. The normal keyboards,
drums and bass are joined on a couple oftracks by a
guest guitarist who helps to maintain the freshness.
