"Unsigned Artist: Leo Wilde"

Whoa now—is that a big-ass pipe organ blazing away in Wilde’s dance-friendly “The Opposite”? Those bold, bellowing chords sure do lay a heavy foundation for this clever put-down song whose multi-faceted flow and catchy hook keep you bumpin’ all the way. The mournful, descending synth tones of “Lost” (together with Wilde’s sepulchural vocal fx) convey the singer’s gloomy state of mind, though the song goes on perhaps too long. “Paradise” puts forth a dark, apocalyptic, thug-lyfe threat and allows the artist to deliver the obligatory boast amid an aura of menace. On all of his songs, Wilde’s consistently deft touch as a producer injects timely accents that make these tunes some of the best unsigned hip-hop we’ve heard. - Music Connection

"Leo Wilde: “Dangerous” is vividly honest!"

Leo Wilde aka Lionel Wilder is an American music producer and independent artist from South Los Angeles, California, USA. Leo grew up in a tumultuous family situation in one of the worst city districts in the country, and was expected to fall victim to the system. However Leo Wilde had dreams about music, which he began creating at the tender of 10, after discovering Fruity Loops via his elder brother. Hence when he was 19, Leo attended the Musicians Institute to receive his Audio Engineering Certification. He worked at a recording studio for almost two years before going off on his own adventure.

In 2013 he started a promotion company in California, called “My Own Entertainment, LLC.” Leo Wilde writes, produces, records, mixes and masters all his songs, which he release and publishes under his publishing company, “Leo Wilde Music.”

Fresh on the list, is the self-produced single “Dangerous”. The track, a free download from his website, is somehow gritty yet smooth at the same time, so listenable and yet nothing like conventional pop music

Leo Wilde is one of the only few R&B and Soul artists at the moment who isn’t conventionally cookie cutter, and it’s this dichotomy that characterizes him as an artist. Leo oscillates between pop-gloss and grit, between passion and meaning and between exposure and mystery.

His smooth, soulful voice almost obscures what he is singing about, with more than a small side of brooding desperation and nihilism. He is pioneering a kind of sub-genre of R&B that feels uncompromisingly authentic.

The worn out tropes of ‘bitches and money’ somehow feel subversive again, thanks to the experimental electronic production and Leo’s crooning vocal. The lyrics feel like an uncompromisingly realistic reflection of his reality, and its aggressiveness is tempered by the smoothness of his sound: “I was the one you called / Every time something in your life was going wrong / I was the one you called / But it turns out you didn’t even want me at all.”

Pop music – within the framework of R&B and Soul in this instance – that truly speaks to people is a rare thing these days, but this track is so magnetizing because it feels so distinctly personal. In an age where popular music has become increasingly bland in order to appeal to as many people as possible, “Dangerous” is vividly honest.

It’s not about getting drunk in a club, it’s about the psychological and emotional turmoil within a relationship. Leo Wilde is pushing the boundaries of what we consider to be “popular” and he is wise to resist typecasting. - Jam Sphere

"Leo Wilde: An Artist Must Continue To Evolve"

Check out the interview with Leo Wilde exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: How were you able to start your journey in the entertainment business? Where did this all start?
Leo Wilde: I was actually 19 and signed up for Musicians Institute in 2007 for their audio engineering program. I have been doing music since I was 10, but took it seriously at 19.

What are some of the creative ways you use to promote your music?
Folks love the shirts and always love being in videos. I actually want to get tons of people in a music video simply because word of mouth is stronger and folks can’t help but watch a video they’ve been in repeatedly. Especially if it’s getting views.

What is the greatest challenge you face in today’s entertainment business? How do you overcome them?
Breaking out of that box. Often times folks put you in a box that limits your creativity. The only way to get around this is to be independent. It’s pretty much the rules of the house, don’t like it, leave type of thing. Sadly, it is what it is.

How is the music scene like in your hometown? What do you like about it and what don’t you like?
Given that I am in Los Angeles, the music scene is pretty lit. You can find any and all genres within this county. I love the people here and wouldn’t have it any other way. Los Angeles is my city, my life, and my blood. The only thing that makes any place terrible is douche bags. Since they are everywhere, I can’t say it’s the problem.

Where do you think the future of music is going to be? How do you feel artists can be more a part of it?
Independent artist are creating a movement never before seen. The internet has been the best thing going for the future of music. Artists are already a part of it every day, sticking it to the man. Hell, mainstream has even been forced to fund and be a part of the movement due to how strong it really is. Just look at Soundcloud.

What advice can you give to other upcoming artists and musicians trying to achieve success?
There isn’t anything I can tell anyone about achieving success. It’s been pretty much trial and error the last couple of years. The only thing I can say is be consistent. The only way someone starts to fall off or become whack is if they get lazy. Biggest pitfall, don’t get comfortable. Always strive for something new to prevent stagnation.

What inspires you to write your next song?
This can come from anywhere. To the douche bag at the corner store to the pretty lady in the shopping center. Life is filled with all types of things to write about. As long as I feel, I will write.

What are the steps you take to make a song?
Oh, fun stuff. I go from talking, freestyle singing, to making a beat. Not necessarily in that order, but I love to sing so melodies tend to be the driving force in my music. I produce all my own tracks, so I’ll play some keys and sing more often to get started. It’s a fun process and really becomes a journey every time.

What do you think makes a great song?
Performance. In the end, if you give a great performance that is what makes people come back for more. The experience. If people don’t have a good experience, they tend to not want to do it again. You have to perform great and always have something that makes it you. Your stamp is important.
