Biography

Leonard and Sample

Leonard and Sample is a 7 piece band from Vancouver BC, which features the powerful vocals of Sue Leonard and the soulful piano/organ work of Bill Sample.

Though the band is brand new, the credits of it’s members would reach halfway to the moon. These are not rookies, yet the music is exciting, fresh, and honest.

Sue Leonard is originally from Hamilton Ontario and is one of the most in demand singers on the west coast. Her recording credits include kd lang, Bon Jovi (produced by Bruce Fairbairn), Ken Hamm, Spirit of the West, Raffi, Roy Forbes and Connie Kaldor. Her many years of touring with kd lang brought her to the stages of “The Johnny Carson Show”, “Saturday Night Live”, “Arsenio Hall”, Late Night with Jay Leno, “The David Letterman Show”, “The Grammys”, “The Juno Awards” and “Top of The Pops” and "Jools Holland Show" (England), among many others. She has performed with Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings), Sue Foley, Sandy Scofield and has appeared with Melissa Etheridge and Colin James.

When Sue sings, people listen.

"from the minute i heard sue's voice, i heard a soul. i heard an ability. i hired her immediately a true professional and a wonderful spirit."
kd lang

"When Sue sings it send shivers up my spine."

Nickel

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample © 2003

intro: Hello tax collector
here’s the keys to my old car
I’ve got nothin’ left to give you
since you took my honey jar

Hello tax collector
here’s the keys to my old car
I’ve got nothin’ left to give you
since you took my honey jar

My roof it started leakin’
front porch needs new stairs
telephone won’t stop ringin’
like my life - oh way beyond repair

With a knock, knock, knock on the front door
I heard a knock, knock on the back
tax man comes to visit me
he just wants his money back

The best part about being broke is there’s nothin’ (there’s nothin’)
The best part about being broke is there’s
nothin’ left ( there’s nothin’ left)
The best part about being broke is there’s
nothin’ left to steal, no

Nickel in my pocket
Nothin’ left to steal
Nickel in my pocket
Nothin’ left to steal
No, oh

I said hello tax collector
what you comin’ around here for?
I turned my pockets inside out
And I ain’t got nothin’ more,
mmm,no I don’t no no because

The best part about being broke is there’s nothin’ (there’s nothin’)
The best part about being broke is there’s
nothin’ left ( there’s nothin’ left)
The best part about being broke is there’s
nothin’ left to steal, no

Nickel in my pocket
Nothin’ left to steal
Nickel in my pocket
Nothin’ left to steal

Without You

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample, Tami Greer © 2003

I got a feeling, a pain so deep
it tears my heart and I can’t sleep
without you
baby without you

I’ve got a shiver in my spine
made me feel like I’m just doin’ time
without you
baby without you

well I fall like a leaf in the wind
deeper and deeper I twist and bend
fall like a leaf from a tree until you catch me

Set me free
Set me free

Oh all my love you’ve got
you know I’m in shock
I still stumble when I walk
without you
baby without you ah

You say black I say white
it’s gonna be another lonely night
without you,
baby without you

well I fall like a leaf in the wind
deeper and deeper I twist and bend
fall like a leaf from a tree until you catch me

Set me free
Set me free

(gtr. solo)

Caught in a circle
round and round

by this love you know I’m bound
yeah

Set me free
Set me free
Set me free
Set me free

crackle and crumble
hard and dry
this driven love is gonna make me cry
without you........baby without you

I Believe

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample © 2003

I believe in the moon and stars
above
I believe in a thing
we call love
I believe in the heart of each and
every man
Is born a need to understand

I believe in the right to live our
dreams
I believe in human luxury
I believe that things aren’t quite
what they seem
Lord, I believe in you and me

Go tell your mama..................(go
tell you mama)
Go tell your papa, there’s no
shadow of a doubt
This human condition,
well it keeps this old heart wishing
One day I'll wake up from this
dream to find
The whole world has come around

Dreamt a thousand babies I could
hear them cry
Off to war to keep this machine
alive
Turn up your local station and
tune out all those lies
While the politicians point their
fingers at the other side

Money it don't necessarily make
you wise
There are people dying while
others thrive
Slipped and fell right through the
cracks while we stood and closed
our eyes
Wake up Monday morning to see if
your stock survived

Go tell your mama……………(go tell
your mama)
Go tell your papa, there’s no
shadow of a doubt
This human condition,
Well it keeps this old heart wishing
One day I'll wake up from this
dream to find
The the whole world has come
around

Love can’t live where there is hate
Innocence lost will never be
replaced
Sometimes, I just need to
get out of this place

(sax solo)

Go tell your mama.......(go tell
your mama)
Go tell your papa, there’s no
shadow of a doubt
This human condition,
well it keeps this old heart wishing
One day I'll wake up from this
dream to find
The the whole world has come
around

Dig Down Deep

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample © 2003

Look outside your window
past the street below
a city full of fractured beating
hearts
but do they know
your days turn into weeks here
and you find yourself alone

Dig down deep lord
Dig down deep
Dig down deep yeah
Dig down deep

The wind is blowing colder
you’re frozen deep in thought
your yesterdays bleed into a
another day forgot
it’s a great life if you don’t weaken
but you wonder where to start

Dig down deep yeah
Dig down deep
Dig down deep oh
Dig down deep

You wake up to a silence
your sky has turned to red
in pictures that you’ve painted
with all those lies you said
the colours slowly melt away
and the truth begins to bend

Dig down deep yeah
Dig down deep
Dig down deep wow
Dig down deep

{solo}

Your mama’s gotta go now
well it’s time for me to fly
go to sleep and while you sleep
i’ll sing this lullabye
you’ve gotta to crawl before you
walk
or you’ll never touch the sky

Dig down deep yeah
Dig down deep
Dig down deep lord
Dig down deep 2x

I'm Not Gonna Let You Go

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample © 2003

I wanna tell you a story
that you don’t know what you’ve
got
you think the grass is greener on
the other side
I’m here to tell you it’s not
you know you’ve been drivin’ me
crazy
I could just walk out that door

that would be too damn easy no
that would be too damn easy

I’m not gonna let you go
I’m not gonna let you go
I’m not gonna let you go
no no no no no no no
I’m not gonna let you go yeah

Your bag’s half packed, you’ve
been
sittin’ on the fence
from where I stand, it doesn’t
make much sense
you’ve been movin’ out since the
day you moved in
you’ve been ringin’ my door bell
but you won’t come in
you know you’ve been driving me
under
I should just walk out that door

that would be too damn easy no
that would be too damn easy

i’m not gonna let you go
i’m not gonna let you go
i’m not gonna let you go
i’m not gonna let you go

(last chance) this is our last
chance
(last chance)for happiness
(last chance) last chance, last
chance

{amazing guitar solo}

you know you’ve been driving me
under
I should just walk out that door

that would be too damn easy
that would be too damn easy

hey I wanna tell you a story
you don’t’ know what you got
you think the grass is greener on
the other side lord
i’m here to tell you it’s not yeah
ah

i’m not, gonna let you go
i’m not, gonna let you go
Well I’m not gonna let
you go no
I’m not gonna let gonna let
you go

i’m not no no no no no
no i’m not gonna let you go go go
i'm not gonna let you go

Bend This Circle

Written By: Sue Leonard, Bill Sample © 2003

He said I don’t have to justify
this ain’t what it seems
you would run a million miles
if you’d seen what Id seen
every night around this time, lord
you could hear the screams
of a love gone bad and a man
gone mad
oh and a child, oh and a child
who’d lost her dreams

if we can bend this circle to the
ground yeah
bend this circle break t down
we’re gonna to' bend this circle
break this chain
and breathe new life into the light
of day

these walls are marked with
teardrops
residue of pain
souls decay and wither here
even angels fade
lost inside this darkness
marred by his disdain
to weak to move on outta here
you know it holds you,
you know it holds you as it’s slave

if we can bend this circle to the
ground yeah
bend this circle break it down
we’re gonna bend this circle break
this chain
and breathe new life into the light
of day

Solo

how much more could one endure
how much more to take
when all you’ve known from birth
to now
is all you’ve had to face

if we can bend this circle to the
ground yeah
bend this circle break it down
we’re gonna bend this circle break
this chain
and breathe new life into the light
of day

(rpt. chorus)

Discography

The first album was in January of 2005, titled "BEND". A three song version is available for radio, and the first planned single is "Without You", to be followed by "Nickel", which has been edited for radio.
In March 2005, shortly after the release of the CD, Without You, had been picked up by Doreen Copeland of 104.9 Clear FM right here in our home town of Vancouver. Terry David Mulligan from, CKUA "Mulligan Stew" in Edmonton AB., added "Nickel" to his playlist. In Nanaimo BC, Bob Lucas of "CHLY" has been very supportive Of L&S, playing most of the tracks off of the newly released CD, as well as CUVE FM on the Sunshine Coast. Now it goes without saying, that C.B.C. has been our biggest supporter.
We've been featured on The Afternoon Show, by Kathryn Gretsinger, Paul Grant of "Hot Air."
Roots Round Up and NXNE.
