In an age where new rappers are born every day, and a new project comes out daily, it’s hard for any new artist to distinguish themselves amongst the crowd. This is especially difficult now that rap has taken a hipster path. Clothes, marijuana, women and partying, have the game in a full nelson. Don’t forget the endless amount of the swag that supposedly every rapper has. Despite raps new sound, there must be a balance between the light hearted hipster commercial inspired music and the more lyrical underground scene. This is where upcoming Brooklyn rapper Lerix comes into the play.

The Brooklyn artist releases his “30 Rock” inspired EP, entitled Dinner with Jack Donaghy. Lerix has found his comfort zone and creates a sound which should help separate himself from the endless wave of new rappers. Even though he lacks much of the grittiness that many hardcore underground fans love, he sounds authentic and his lyrics aren’t overly saturated with materialistic ideals. What Lerix lacks in lyrical depth, he makes up for in his ability to craft good songs. Tracks such as “I’m Gone”, “Space Bound”, and “Another Round”, are the best display of Lerix in his purest form.

Lerix is constantly improving and if he remains on the same path it’s no reason why he shouldn’t blow. However, tracks such as “Villain’s Song” and “Unapologetic” sound indistinguishable and reveal a weak point in Lerix abilities. In the grand of scheme things, Lerix has the sound and confidence to make a name for himself. It should only be a matter of time before he starts buzzing.

Hip-hop artist Lerix described his music in one word: emotional. Before you start thinking of Boyz II Men and Adele, Lerix asks that you let him explain.

“I mean that in a sense of however I’m feeling at that moment is what I’ll capture,” he said. “No one song or no five songs really describe who I am as a person. It’s just like anything, one day you’re feeling great and the next day you’re feeling not so great.”

Lerix graduated from New York University in 2009, after working two jobs alongside his college career. He said students pursuing music professionally should expect many sleepless nights, especially if they are trying to balance a regular life.

Having a support system is essential to keeping sanity and staying creative. “Get a good team around you with people that believe in what you’re doing,” Lerix said. “You want to have people you can go to the studio with and bounce ideas off of.”

The inspirations for Lerix’s music can come from walking the streets of his hometown of Brooklyn, New York, or simply watching a movie. How he perceives everyday experiences influences about 90 percent of his music, whether he’s directly involved or a third party.

“Being from Brooklyn, you come from a place where being lyrical is important, and I try to keep those roots as much as possible in my music,” Lerix said. “If I’m noticing a fight or if I’m noticing people loving each other or whatever, I just take that and put it into the music, and it inspires me.”

In the past two years, he has released three EPs and performed at festivals like South By Southwest and Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Lerix’s will release his newest EP, “Dinner with Jack Donaghy” mid-November. You can listen the single “Another Round” below.

Tyler Horn, a junior from Xavier University, can hear multiple genres of music within Lerix’s style, which contributes to high energy and pop-like beats, similar to artist Chiddy Bang.

“Lyrically he makes several mentions to people that feel like outcasts, and seeing as college is a place where people are trying to discover themselves, that would appeal to a college audience,” he said.

Greg “G-three3” Gibson, a freshman at the International Academy of Design and Technology, thinks the versatility of Lerix’s music adapts to college students’ varied lifestyles. “He comes with that edge that gives those people what they’re looking for when they club, [listen to] iPods and mp3 [players], or CDs in the car,” he said.

Currently studying digital media production, Gibson noticed that artists and music labels from all genres are building fan bases through social media, bypassing typical methods. “Social media can take you to fame with no radio play,” he said.

Lerix is a self-described “tech nerd,” juggling profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus, all while maintaining his website. Open communication with fans is extremely important to Lerix, and social media provides him with an avenue to speak freely without third-part influence. “They can see I’m an actual, real person. If you [tweet] at me and I see it, I will answer you,” he said. “It makes it [the conversation] more organic.”

Authenticity is valued among music professionals, so Lerix strives to keep his own voice unique. Recently, Lerix has been listening to Kendrick Lamar, N.E.R.D., and Childish Gambino, because they are true to themselves. However, Lerix doesn’t listen to hip hop when he’s creating his own music, because he doesn’t want other artists to influence him too heavily.

Despite the inherent ingenuity in any industry, Lerix advised aspiring musicians to keep networking because for every jerk you meet, there are two great people looking to support you.

Dinner With Jack Donaghy

Been following Brooklyn emcee Lerix for a while now. He is great with his rhyme game and his music always delivers. Recently, he dropped his highly anticipated EP, Dinner With Jack Donaghy, much to the delight of his fans. Last year he began to create a buzz for the project with the release of the single “Another Round.” Lerix shared in a previous interview that his goal with this EP was to create a caricature of himself while paying tribute to one of his favorite tv characters, Jack Donaghy. So how did he do? Let’s explore a couple of tracks and find out.

“I’m Gone”

The production here is first-rate. It contains an array of light sounds and a relaxed vibe. The hook is on point as well. Lerix has a clean melodic delivery and the lyrics are quality. The verses are good. Lerix comes with a smooth flow, clever wordplay, and premium lyrics. He does an impressive job of acknowledging those who doubt him while at the same time letting them know that they don’t really matter. He spits: “I’m sorry I can’t hear ya. Can’t hear ya partners either. And I can’t stay, I only stopped cause I was taking a breather. Off I go, I’m gone like a jet. On to the next, no slow mo running. Like I don’t got time, like I’m rocking the red tight suit in the lightning logo. In a flash, it could go away.” Those are some pretty slick rhymes right there. Overall, this song is a hit and a great inclusion for the beginning of the EP.

“Villain’s Song”

The production here is hot. It has a low heavy bass, a few sound effects, and an intense vibe. The hook is ill too. The delivery is unique with an ominous haunting touch added to the vocals. The lyrics are dope and memorable. The verses are top notch. Lerix has an immaculate flow, witty wordplay, and insane lyrics. What is so intriguing about this cut is that it shows a darker side to the emcee. He usually takes on a lighter tone and is about having fun. This time around he is more brooding and serious. The change up works though, as Lerix goes IN from start to finish. Also, love the various references to popular superheroes and things related to them. That took a lot of creativity to pull off. Standout lines include: “The reason for my meanness, really nothing specific. No trauma from my father or my mama, I’m just devilish. No amount of reasoning could bring this to a settlement. The lust for power got me. I got a taste and loved it. So I’m gonna use any means, cause I want it all or nothing. So who want to be starting something? Believe me I will end it. Long as my heart keeps pumping, my evil knows no limits.” Those are sick lines that make quite the statement. In the end, this song is a banger and the favorite off of the EP.

“Unapologetic”

The production here is choice. It features a slight knock, a snapping sound, and a mellow street vibe. The hook is noteworthy. Lerix has a charismatic delivery and his lyrics are crafty. The verses are excellent. Lerix has an effortless flow laced with a hint of arrogance. Also, he has stellar wordplay and fire rhymes. That serious and confident persona from the previous track, appears here too. Except this time it’s more in a hood fashion as opposed to sinister. Once again, Lerix owns the switch though. Highlight lines from the verses include: “And these here are just the samples. I been cooking in my kitchen. I’m a bad muthaf—er. Heisenberging on these b—hes. Got it down to a science. Ya’ll just asking, hoping, wishing. Everybody want to eat but no one want to do the dishes. I’m a boss, I’m a chef, quarterback, and I’m the ref. I just call ‘em like I see ‘em, let these players do the rest. I just focus with my team. And we turning up the tempo. Cause ain’t no I in we(Wii) unless you talking bout Nintendo.” Lerix spit that flame in those lines. All in All, this track is a winner and another favorite off of the project.

For anyone who is already a fan of Childish Gambino, you will find Lerix’ style similar. Full of clever pop culture references, nuanced wordplay and intriguing rhymes, Dinner with Jack Donaghy is a tidy half hour that left this reviewer wanting more.

The EP opens with a short intro (dubbed “Overture”) which leads to “New Season,” a strong lead-off introducing Lerix to the listener. The song is structured in three parts, each taking the groove up a notch with a style recalling the pioneering Sugarhill Gang.

Each track has its own feel, but there is nothing scattered or slipshod about the EP; similar to Gambino, Lerix blends different styles seamlessly, with different tempos working together. Lyrically, Lerix embraces the boastfulness inherent in hip-hop without sounding insincere or derivative, while occasionally blending humor (as in the song “The Girl From the Other Night” with the refrain “paranoid but I know I’m right/there’s something weird about that girl from the other night”) and painful honesty (as in the penultimate track “Another Round”).

Lerix has said of the EP that he was trying to “…caricature myself through song. This is the first interview for Undergroundfuzion.com and I have the pleasure to have interviewed the homie, Lerix. He has been sending me music every week for the past couple of months. He has recently dropped the Un-(W)raps mixtape just recently so now was the perfect time for everybody to see exactly who is Lerix.

UF: For the people who don't know who you are, tell the people your name and where you from?
Lerix: What’s up people! My name is Lerix, hailing out of Brooklyn, New York City.

UF: How did you get started in music?
Lerix: I was always into music as a kid but I was into hip hop music big time! I started rhyming when I was 15 years old, just messing around freestyling and recording verses on a tape deck with some friends. I fell in love it ever since.

UF: For everybody that hasn't heard your music before, explain your sound and style to them.
Lerix: My music is intelligent, witty and fun. I’m a hip hop head to the core man, metaphors, punchlines, I’m all about it! Lol

UF: There has been a long list of great emcees to come out of New York, especially Brooklyn, how have they influenced you and what sets you apart from them?
Lerix: Most of the emcees out of Brooklyn really capture the essence of hip hop. The artists I look up too know how to walk the line between music that’s entertaining and full of substance.

UF: I have read that at one point the ups and downs of the music made you stop rapping, what was going on in your head during that time?
Lerix: That time was crazy because a bunch of things were going on in my life both personal & professional. To be honest, I wasn’t mature enough to deal with the business side of music at the time, so my attitude was “Fuck it all! I’m out”

UF: During your time off from rapping what inspired to get back into it?
Lerix: My inspiration was not having the passion for anything else the way I did for music. I call it “the day I unplugged from the matrix” cause one random day I came to the realization that this is what I want to do.

UF: Since the music industry is always changing where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Lerix: I see myself doing what I’m doing now but on a grander scale, making quality music I know that will never change, I love what I do.

UF: Since it seems like everybody wants to be a rapper these days what advice would you give someone that is looking to get into this industry?
Lerix: That’s the truth! I would say if your talented and love what you doing then get ready to work hard, it’s a real hustle, also surround yourself with people that have the same mentality as you that way you can all help each other to the top.

UF: Who are some of your musical influences in the industry?
Lerix: My musical influences change all the time, right now I’m digging Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kanye, J.Cole & Nipsey Hussle.

UF: What are some of the projects that you are currently working on now?
Lerix: Right now im working with Megatron from Hailmegatron.net on a mixtape compilation of artist from different areas like NY, DC, LA and NC. It’s going be real dope working with all those artists. I’m also working with my man Thirsty McGurk again on his new mixtape dropping in November.

UF: Who in the industry do you pattern yourself after? If any and why?
Lerix: I honestly wouldn’t know, I look up to different people for different qualities, like personality, drive, work ethic, lyrics etc. It’s like a giant inspiration monster.

UF: Since the New Year is right around the corner what are some of your plans for 2010?
Lerix: 2010 I’m dropping “It’s a (w)rap...again” I’ve been working on it for a little while writing and recording songs. I’m treating it like an album more than a mixtape, I’m sure people are going to appreciate the quality when it drops.
