"Review : The Brag"

“When you look up ‘authentic’ in the Authoritative Dictionary of Music, "Leroy Lee" appears... a no-nonsense, wholesome and pared-back aesthetic permeates Lee’s set. Subtle but substantive, simple but not simplistic, laid back but polished, the warmth of his folk music compliments the intimacy with which his lyrics convey basic human experience.” : Andrew Yorke - The Brag

"Interview : "Leroy Lee enters music's big arena""

... Lee describes his music as "somewhere between English folk and Americana". There's a lot of blues in his guitar playing while his poetic lyrics owe more to the English singers.

"It's pretty much those two things," he says.

"On one side there's Bert Jansch, Nick Drake and the English folk stuff and on the other side, the Americana, you've got Mississippi John Hurt and Big Bill Broonzy and all those guys."

Lee is mostly self-taught as a guitarist, although some lessons in blues guitar had a big influence on his playing style.

"I never had a lot of formal training musically," he says. "When I first started learning guitar I had, like, two chords and that's just how I learnt to play, making it up for myself and learning other people's songs.

"I did have some lessons with a fantastic delta blues guitarist called John Morris.

"That was really important because a lot of that stuff you hear it and it doesn't really make sense. It's kind of an illusion, it sounds like you're playing two guitars because you are playing a bass line and a melody at the same time." ... - Illawarra Mercury

"Review : The AU REVIEW"

“I don’t think Leroy is going to be just another ‘man with a guitar’ Australian export... he’s well worth his salt, and incredibly entertaining.” : Liz Elleson, The AU REVIEW - The AU REVIEW

"Album review : Alternative Media Group"

“A smoke n’ tinder acoustic warmth permeates all his recordings… gently romantic, and with just enough realism and dark patches to avoid being pie-faced as a mere sentimentalist. Listen to the highway-swept, America-esque melodics in the chillingly infectious Mountain Song, and you’ll know what I mean.” - Alternative Media Group

Bio

Intimate, lyrical, hypnotic and transporting, lamplit folk songs.

Since winning Triple J’s Unearthed competition with the lamp-lit folk tune “Drawing Smoke” (which also featured on Packed To The Rafters), Leroy has been criss-crossing the country with the likes of The Frames (The Swell Season), Missy Higgins, Lior, Folk Uke, Steve Poltz, Kaki King, Lisa Mitchell and Jeff Lang, and has appeared on many festival line-ups including Woodford Folk Festival, Peats Ridge and The National.

LEROY LEE is an enchanting songsmith, weaving poetic metaphors around everyday experience, transporting us with his intricate melodic textures .... surprising us with his turns of phrase and sonicly rich guitar landscapes – twisting then turning, leading us on an intimate journey of surprise and intrigue.

The guitar sets the scene : from driving riffs to intricate finger-picking melodies, while his intimate vocals whisper strange secrets. Whilst there are traces of English folk legends like Nick Drake and Bert Jansch, and Americana's Townes Van Zandt and Leo Kottke, LEROY LEE creates his own unique world and invites us in.
