"Monthly Discovery – Les Hay Babies"

This month discovery is almost a day to night success. From New-Brunswick, Canada, they call themselves Les Hay Babies. Each of the three quirky young women used to play in solo, write their own music and had their own path. It’s in late 2011 that they decided to form a band to mix their ideas, accents and voices. From three different part of the province, they brought different accents to the table and probably made some of the best harmonies I’ve heard so far from New-brunswick. Now I know you, dear readers, are mostly English speaking and you won’t understand everything they sing but gladly they sing in both, French and English.

For those of you who are not familiar with New-Brunswick, it’s an official bilingual province. Some cities speak mostly English, some speaks more French and some are bilingual. From that, a long time ago, a language call Chiac was developed. Chiac consist of Acadian French speaking mixing English words and structure to their vocabulary. All that, to say that, lately bands from New-Brunswick are emerging and are sticking with their “Chiac” accent. Which I think is very cool and brings something different.

Les Hay Babies is an example of a band from New-Brunswick speaking “Chiac”. Some songs are only in English but some are sang in “Chiac”. If you don’t understand everything it’s okay, their harmonies and melodic chorus makes up for it. I was saying they were and overnight succes but I know they worked really hard for several years to stand where they are right now. They formed the band just last year and they already played in several cities in Canada, France and nest stop is Switzerland. This might seem crazy for a starting band but they are that incredible. Their folky indie sound brings you warmth, comfort, and peace. Here’s the songs in streaming of the EP they launched about a month ago and if you are in Montreal the 20th of October, they are playing at Club Soda. - http://keysandfeathers.com

"Les Hay Babies Launch Debut Disc Tuesday East Coast Music with Bob Mersereau (CBC)"

Goodness, if you're anywhere near Moncton Tuesday night, give your ears a treat by heading to the most anticipated disc launch of the year. For the past few months, Moncton's Les Hay Babies have been wowing audiences with their live shows. Now, the group's first proper disc, a six-track EP is being released, with a show at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre at 7 PM. It's called Folio, and features some of the songs that are already favourites with their fans, all original compositions. A bilingual trio, there are four songs in french, and two in english.
?The members of Les Hay Babies are all ridiculously young, and already accomplished singers. The three women have a marvelous vocal blend, and superior harmonies, with a sound that's very old and very young at the same time. While there are other female trios around in the roots world, this group has a mix of styles no other can boast, and certainly their Acadian heritage informs a lot of that. They call their music organic indie-folk, and you'll hear everything from old-time melodies to modern blue notes. Sometimes they'll use ancient golden harmonies, like Big Band vocal trios. Other times, they are more high-and-lonesome, like having three Gillian Welch's at once. On the slow On ne reviendra plus en courant, a growling, bluesy lead is echoed by angelic, dreamy high voices behind. Elsewhere, they do matching sighs, add impossibly high notes, and just pretty much thrill with every song.

Everything, apart from a haunting pedal steel on one cut, is acoustic, led by their own guitar, ukelele and banjo, plus bass, some mandolin, and perhaps a dobro or slide. The lyrics, at least on the english side, evoke the old-time as well, with Tumbleweed and Horse On Fire both feeling like they come from a Louis L'Amour story, or a 1940's Western. Except nobody ever sang this good. The trio have already had a busy concert summer, and August sees them in Europe at the huge, influential Interceltique Festival of Lorient, France, and then back home for festival dates here as well, including Moncton's Messtival on August 11th, Dieppe's Acadian Festival on the 15th, Acadie Rock on the 17th, and the Larlee Creek Hullabaloo in Perth-Andover, Aug.18-19.

Bio

The singer songwriter trio Les Hay Babies have finally launched their first EP titled Folio on July 31, 2012. The bilingual CD will include six of their original creation. Les Hay Babies craft a colorful folky music filled with sensibility and modernity. The young women, from little New Brunswick villages will carry you into their world with the warmth of their harmonies. They creating moving melodies with only a guitar, a banjo and a ukulele.Even though the band has been created less than a year ago, they already have a name for themselves. Les Hay Babies shared the stage with Motorleague, The Novaks, The Backyard Devils and Les Païens. We may remember them from the hotel elevator shows they were offering during the ECMAs in April 2012.

About their music, the girls had to say this for themselves: “We create what we want to hear as musicians. Why not start a project between friends with different musical genre and find its complementarities? We usually play roots music with an Indie twist… but not inclusively. To simply be inspired by the music within.”
