LES MOD'S Bang Sister Bang.

You won't see these Montrealers on any scooter runs, decked out in parkas or any of that shit. This is an unadulterated rock experience, one foot in the garage and the other in the gutter, but these sludge slingers keep things interesting with a little '70s R&B and country thrown in the mix. Standing somewhere between the Spaceshits and Tricky Woo, Les Mod's fire some vicious rockers like "Let Me Tell Ya," but switch gears with the Stevie Wonder shuffle of "Stone Fox" and the psychedelic closer 'The Player." Nice to see Factor spilling taxpayer cash on good local rock 'n' roll releases instead of the tepid singer/songwriter crap they usually back.

Garage rock Les Mod's-Bang Sister Bang

Their moniker may be the least apt name when coupled with the music these Montreal upstarts play. Les Mod's are hardly rehashing old Nothern soul, but they do occasionally manage to get aound to sanctified seventies-style soul. What really makes this a standout, however, is their sludge slinin' garage rock. In case their name hasn't sent you for a loop, Les Mod's prove to be even harder to nail down when they throw psychedelic stoner dirge in the mix. The true greatness of this record is that Les Mod's can delve into all different styles while still retaining a signature sound.

Comme la toune 6 de l'album, it's my pick of the week.

Bio

Last March 12th, LES MOD’S launched their very first album, Bang Sister Bang – a true rock’n’soul blast, performing as part of the festivities
surrounding the official reception of MIMI 2004 (Montreal's International Music Initiative).

After spending the past three years shouting their blazing rock’n’soul music in the dark, smoky bars of the metropolis, LES MOD’S music achievements are blossoming. Now that three experienced musicians - Alexandre Giguère on drums, Laurent Royal on keyboards, and Pascal Lesieur on guitar - joigned the two founding members, lead guitarist and singer Alexis Roberge and bassist Philippe Thomas, it is the beginning of a new era for the band.

BANG SISTER BANG

With an explosive blend of thirteen original compositions, LES MOD’S reveal an out of the ordinary musical maturity, halfway between the black soul of the 70’s and the rock’n’roll of the discharged undergrounds. Joigned together on the album Bang Sister Bang, they constitute an abrasive mixture, sometimes inoffensive, often overwhelming. Fire ignites the explosive mix in the captivating My Pride - a kind of delirium lingers from the aggressive phrases, while the wick unleashes at the sound of the sensual Stone Fox – sarcastic, langourous disco-funk set ablaze. An explosion occurs when the blazing inferno of the guitars introduce the title song Bang Sister Bang, charged with electrifying sounds and smooth accents.

Arranged and recorded by Bob Olivier (Lilison Dikinara, Les Brestfeaders, Stephen Faulkner), and David Ferry, and produced by LES MOD’S themselves, the album is received with enthusiasm by the public, as well as the music industry. LES MOD’S have been able to profit from the financial support of FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent On Records) for the production of this record, a help that very few Quebec French-speaking bands have managed to obtain (LES MOD'S are nevertheless singing all of their songs in English).
