Letters Make Words- Live! @ Britannia Arms in Cupertino
Fuzz.com Exclusive- 4.26.08 Show Review

My day this past Saturday, April 26th was pretty ridiculous, I’ll be honest. I was drunk by noon, sober by 6pm, and capped my night off properly around 2am, enjoying a killer musical set by Bay Area’s own Letters Make Words.

Letters Make Words is a pop/rock quartet, members all under the age of 24, and heavily influenced by The Beatles. And no, this isn’t another Panic! At The Disco in the making; these kids have talent, drive, and a musical knowledge and understanding way beyond their years.

With dueling female vocals, and instrumental melodies ranging from soft ballads to experimental tempo pop-jams, the LMW sound is hard to classify. But, when you listen in on the lyrical nods to The Beatles and other pop/rock classics, all you can do is sit back and enjoy the complete and udder catchiness of all that is Letters Make Words.

Kicking the night off with their “Analog EP” opening song “Radio”, moving feet and mimicking lips soon followed. From their loyal fans drunk from the strong drinks they’ve been consuming all night, down to the middle-age barfly just listening in, it seemed like all attention was focused on Letters Make Words.

From “Radio” to their encore of “Dating Material”, LMW packed the Brit with good music and great energy. Each song was fun, tight, and got the drunk people in the crowd a-dancin’. They also whipped out a few new songs within their set, making me and everyone else in the room anxious for a new album or EP. Accompanying the older songs in their set, such as “Anywhere” and “Don’t Close Your Eyes”, are the songs “Photographs” and “Pretty Girl”. These two new songs are truly pop-gems that I can’t wait to see appear on a new LMW recording; raw, honest, and catchy as all hell.

"Album Review- Letters Make Words "The Analog EP""

Letters Make Words is an up-and-coming dual female-fronted alternative rock band from the Bay Area, reminding me of the likes of Belly and Throwing Muses from the '90s. Founded by sisters with similar high-pitched voices, the music is completely centered around their vocals; with the guitars and drums accentuating the well-written lyrics and song rhythms. I really enjoy how Nadia and Naomi's vocals compliment each other as they harmonize and switch off lines during their songs about love and life. Any girl can relate to the lyrics in "My Reasoning," a beautifully composed song about love lost and how to deal with that loss. It also happens to be my favorite song on the album with the marching band style drumming, soft flow of the guitar and bass, and passionate, heart-felt vocals.
The band had to struggle through the loss of two drummers in the past year, but now this foursome is back and ready to perform with their new 16-year-old drummer Corey. Happiness has also found this quartet, with Naomi (bass/vocals) and Justin (guitar) getting married earlier this year, solidifying the band's strength and bond! I look forward to their new recordings, which I'm sure will be enriched with their new life experiences and maturity. Check them out at: www.myspace.com/lettersmakewords

"Bands to Know - Letters Make Words"

Hailing from Mountain View, this poppy-rock group was formed by sisters Naomi and Nadia Zep.

Letters Make Words is known for their sophisticated and hooky song writing, featuring dueling and harmonizing vocals that will catch you by surprise… and you’ve got yourself a unique combination that is fun, engaging, and easy to listen to. In addition to the sisters, the band also features Justin Stunich on lead guitar and 16 year old Corey Supp-Harte on drums.

Reminiscent of early ’90’s Grrl Rock this group makes me wanna rock my Veruca Salt shirt and watch My So Called Life episodes.

Definitely “up-and-coming.” Check them out at myspace.com/lettersmakewords - Fringe Magazine

Bio

Letters Make Words is unique by today’s standards of alternative/pop/rock music. Imagine the sounds of The All-American Rejects, mixed with early Beatles pop, a dash of emo and powerful dueling female vocals. Fronted by sisters Naomi and Nadia Zep they will catch you by surprise with their sophisticated and hooky songwriting.

Formed in late 2005 LMW have been through a lot. With their unfortunate Spinal Tap-esque curse of being unable to keep a drummer they have had to come up with creative solutions to keep their band afloat. Despite their difficulties the band pushed forward and managed to land themselves a spot on the 2009 San Francisco date of the Vans Warped Tour courtesy of Sonicbids.com. They have also become a Live 105 Radio Soundcheck staple with their first single “Photographs”.

Currently LMW are working on finishing their first full length album with producer Scott Llamas at Popsmear Studios in San Rafael, CA as well as shooting a music video for their first single. They are planning a two week tour of the west coast for early 2010.
