Finding Their Way Home
Level Hill has found a new way home—and their debut EP released November 2007 showcases what a diverse way they have found. The album takes listeners down a road of rock, blues, and country, in five hard-to-forget tracks. From “Moonlight River” with its Southern rock groove and “Little of Me” with its country warmth, to the driving rhythm of “Memory” and fun-loving charm of “Summertime,” the album lets listeners hear the band’s roots, its depth, and its bright future. Recorded at Flash Point Studios in Austin, Texas, this self-titled EP is sure to get Level Hill noticed.

Formerly comprised of a husband-wife duo, the band now consists of Michael Statham (lead vocals), Ryan Holgerson (lead guitar), Candace Statham (rhythm guitar/backup vocals), Stu Palmer (drums), and Wayne Decker (bass). These five combine a variety of influences and styles into what becomes a blend of poetic lyrics delivered through powerful vocals, expressive guitar riffs against an acoustic backdrop, and resonant rhythms derived through the drums and bass.
While it may seem like such growth would take a road-long-traveled, this band’s evolution took only a matter of months. In spring 2007, the band evolved from Michael and Candace playing mostly cover-songs on acoustic guitars, to a trio. Michael quickly discovered a unique ability as a songwriter, one of the first songs, “Finding a New Way Home” (EP track five). This song, currently the band’s only acoustic one, poignantly echoes the battle with alcohol that Michael’s brother long fought, and ultimately lost.
As the originals continued to grow in number, so too did the band’s ambition. The band evolved further when they added Stu in early summer 2007. Not only did Level Hill’s sound gain a percussiveness it once lacked, but the band then had the ability to move away from a solely acoustic set. Ryan shifted the lead guitar to electric, while Candace kept the soulful strumming alive with her acoustic rhythm playing. Stu’s beats helped the band take their songwriting a step further and created a fuller sound. But with the new electric sound, something seemed like it was missing. That’s where Wayne stepped in on bass in late summer 2007, completing Level Hill’s present lineup. His bass lines gave the band’s sound what it was missing, and with the evolution from acoustic duo to full band complete, Level Hill prepared for the studio. After rehearsing the five album tracks, Level Hill laid down the album in two days with the help of the East Side Flash. Now with the recording process complete and CDs in hand, Level Hill plans to spend 2008 on the stage.
Tour dates will include shows in their hometown of Austin, as well as other Texas venues. It’s been a long road quickly traveled, and this band is now finding its way to the top.
