Mateo, meanwhile, added some latin hip-hop to the AUSA performance. He has spent nine years in the Guard and hopes to go a full 20, he said.
“They?re letting us be soldiers first, then write music and do shows,” Mateo said of To the Fallen Records. “I?ve been to Central America and Europe.”
He wrote “Soy” or in English, “I am,” when he was mobilized to Guantanamo Bay.
“I was in a guard tower in Guantanamo,” he recalled. “I wrote, „I am a soldier and this is what we do.? It was all in Spanish.”
Mateo played an infectious salsa number that had a few folks dancing in the aisles.
Civilian Lee Wilson joined his friend Mateo in the performance. Wilson, of Boston, is a singer-songwriter whose works have appeared on MTV.
“When my buddy was in Iraq, I?d send him stuff,” Wilson said. “I kept his music dream alive when he was in Iraq.” - AUSA
