Bio

This ancient story of the Chinese game Tangram is the perfect analogy to tell the story of the Berlin-based band LEYAN and their music. It is a story of seeking and finding, of destruction and creation.

The forging of something complete out of many different fragments marks the end of this adventurous journey. This process essentially accounts for the use of Tangram-pieces as artwork for the band‘s upcoming debut album “Dancing Sculptures“ (Release date: June 24, 2011 at Noizgate Records/ Rough Trade).

The debut‘s twelve tracks are deeply rooted in the souls of their stories. They stir and touch, break and unite - they are mysterious and catchy alike. They take the listener on an adventure through their sonorous impulses and detailed arrangements. This debut dares to challenge the music
business‘ strive for quick and cheap success - the album is the impersonation of honest, independent effort. This is music that is treading the thin line between indie, pop and rock but it is always diverse enough not to be put into any box and always offers surprising moments. LEYAN named
their music style very fittingly “MadPop“. It is intoxicating, flowing, spheric as well as haunting.

The listener is always encouraged to dance along to this dynamic and powerful rhythm. The band‘s singer and keyboarder, Christoph Ecke, grew up in a very musical household and therefore got in contact with music from a very early age on. His mother began teaching him to play
the piano at the age of five. Later on he expanded his talent by focusing on composition, musical theory and singing. Eight years ago Christoph and his father Jürgen Ecke, one of the most renowned composers of movie scores in Germany, began writing songs together. It was a long and winding road until in September 2006 they were joined by guitarist Marc Hassdenteufel, Damian Dabrowski on bass and Ilir Mulaj on drums. LEYAN was born. A close-knit entity of musicians - Marc studied Jazz at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA), Ilir graduated from the Berlin University of Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin, Germany) and Damian perfected his bass skills in
countless bands with styles ranging from Acid Jazz to Metal.

The band soon gathered speed and has been booked as support on the German tour dates of such renowned acts as Blue October (US), Turin Brakes (UK), Soulsavers (UK) with Mark Lanegan on vocals and Scouting For Girls (UK). They took part in and won the “7th Radio Fritz Night of
Talents“ (an event organized and sponsored by the Berlin-based radio station “Fritz“) in the soldout “Admiralspalast“ in Berlin and were MySpace Featured Artist.

In 2010 the band had the opportunity to be the first ever music act to perform at the official Aftershow Party of the ECHO Awards (German Music Awards) after they had won the “Köstritzer Echolot“ contest. “Playing live is especially important for us. We need this immediacy, the direct interaction. We feel this fire burning within us and the audience as soon as we hit the stage. We are playing ourselves and the audience into some kind of musical trance.“ the band pinpoints their philosophy. In early 2011 the band‘s song Heal The Knives was featured on a CD in the “Rolling Stone“ and the song Nescience played a prominent role in the saturday-night crime thriller “The Pride of the Family“ in the ZDF (German public service television channel). The appearance in the TV-thriller lead to Nescience entering the top100 of the iTunes alternative charts. Driven by their own high standard and expectations the band continually spent a lot of time in the studio. Together they developed new ideas, discarded entire songs and worked tirelessly on weaving their own sound concepts into one cohesive ensemble. “We aimed at creating an album that unified everything that we believe is part of LEYAN as a whole. We wanted to write powerful songs that instantly grab your attention but in which you can always discover new and exciting
