Lian is just completing her first CD, ÒLotus FlowerÓ, which features David "Fuze" Fiuczynski of Screaming Headless Torsos, Neal and Al Evans of Soulive, dj Cheb i Sabbah, Adam Rogers, Didi Gutman of Brazilian Girls and other NY luminaries.
Lian was featured on the 1995 Hector Zazou & Harold Budd album "Glyph" (Crammed Disc Records), where she was the only vocal contributor. Her track, "And She Stepped Aside" garnered much attention on the popular radio show "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on Los Angeles radio station KPFA. Lian also wrote and performed "Who Will Accept My Tears" on an album by her frequent collaborator, guitarist David Manley of Jill ScottÕs current band.
Lian has had a variety of recordings on MP3.com, where she had great success, racking up over 250,000 hits before MP3.com closed in late 2003. She was featured repeatedly by the editors of the site. Her songs regularly topped the soul, R&B, jazz, world, ambient and new age sections, and she was featured on 6 compliation CD's distributed by MP3.com.
Performing professionally for over fifteen years, Lian has shared the stage with Screaming Headless Torsos, The Groove Collective, Frank Foster, Reggie Workman, Broun Fellinis, and many others. Working collaboratively, she has written music with Hector Zazou and Harold Budd, David Fiuczynski, Dave Manley of Deep PM, and Adam Rogers of Lost Tribe. She is a gifted lyricist and melodic writer, and a talented arranger.
Singing and performing since she was a child, Lian is the daughter of Bay Area jazz singer and vocal coach Maye Cavallaro, and the grand-daughter of a concert pianist on her father's side and an opera singer on her mother's. She has studied music at UCLA, SFSU, and most recently at the New School for Social Research Jazz Program. Involved in music throughout her life, Lian has a deep interest in many different styles and the music of many countries. She has studied Indian, Balkan, Asian, Arabic and African music as well as more conventional styles such as jazz, soul, blues, pop and opera.
