"Libby Lavella Tall Poppy"

"Sometimes Libby Lavella sings delicately crafted songs tinged with melancholy. Other times she cozies up to the bass line, oozing funk. But regardless of the ambience, this imaginative songwriter is always engaging. Lavella's octave straddling soprano is appealing and occasionally surprising, as when it mellows to a smooth alto in Saverio. An able pianist and guitarist, her talent calls for a band that can hold it's own.
Darkly Pretty, this Aussie singer, held the audience riveted, whether she was coaxing chords from the piano, strapping on a guitar or even, as in "Stoning the Crow", rapping centre stage. She and her band gleamed with a polish earned by tireless performing. Libby Lavella's CD "Sponge Brain" is getting airplay on several local stations, a development that is encouraging in a world where innovation is often shunted.
Lavella is a luminous musician of rare poise and substance who will find an audience worthy of her talent in time."

Bio

Australian-born vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Libby Lavella was once described by the LA Times as “pop soul fusion,”. Libby’s sound has since grown and morphed into something difficult to box into any particular genre, falling somewhere on the planes of the vast wilderness that is indie pop, retrospective folk and singer/songwriter. Her follow-up to her debut, Sometime In Morning came out October 26. It has already received great reviews...

Melancholy, renewal, hope, and trust are all themes that Libby tackles wonderfully on her sophomore release. On “Waiting” she proclaims, “If I sound hopeful, with some hesitation / There’s a reason why, I’m afraid to find / I was right all along” over bossa nova bass and shuffling drums. Sometime comes across as anything but hesitant. Libby leaves no punch held as she lets her enchanting soprano soar.

Throughout her career, Libby has performed and/or recorded with the legendary Frank Gambale, SmashMouth, Rain Phoenix, Badi Assad, Michael Sembello, Australian Mushroom recording artist Kate Ceberano, Dave Palmer, Shane Alexander and LA artist Joan Jones. In addition she recorded with the rap artist Big Syke of Tupac Shakur’s Thug Life group in an uncanny collaboration.

Sometime In Morning is a collection of songs that rest somewhere between hope and despair. Three of the songs were co-written with Joan Jones, an LA veteran. Libby says, “Joan and I were both in transition due to changing relationships of various natures. We would hang out and write songs, drink wine and talk about life.”

“I didn’t consciously decide to do an album. I turned around one day and realized I had a large collection of songs that hadn’t been recorded. I was playing keyboards with artist Shane Alexander, and loved his new album….so I contacted LA production duo Heroes & Villains who produced it. We met, they liked the material, so we began the process. SOMETIME IN MORNING was completed over 2 months in about 100 hours with a small group of musicians. Heroes and Villains insisted on keeping it very “in-house”, which was new to me. In the past I either had a band that I would work with ALL the time or I would call some of the top musicians in town that I know and they would play everything. The difference here was, H&V encouraged me to play all the parts as I heard them. No-one I’ve worked with ever before has allowed that. Making this record was very authentic in the sense that I felt entirely connected to the process in a truly creative way…and it was a lot of fun.”

Sometime In Morning features, Libby – vocals/acoustic guitar/Rhodes/Wurlitzer/piano/piano accordian, Dave Palmer - various vintage keyboard sounds/Wurlitzer and Piano, Billy Mohler - bass/electric guitar/percussion/additional keys, Charlie Paxson - Drums. The vocal section in I Live In Hope is Shelly O'Neill/Joan Jones/Selwyn, Sharon, Cheryl Gibson/ Ro Cham Beaux.

Lavella’s performances demonstrate a deep command of Classical, Soul and World influences. Spending many years performing in bands and studying at The Conservatorium of Music in her native Australia, Lavella’ desire for more diverse musical influences led her to extensive travels of Egypt, Zimbabwe and Europe. She lived and studied in Italy for a time at The Universita Per Stranieri in Perugia.

A new EP is due out this year, plus more songs for Michael Scott's NY Times Best Selling series, Nicholas Flamel.
