"Libra's Rib"

Bands have personnel changes and evolving sound. It’s the nature of the biz. Let’s get the personnel matter out of the way for Libra’s Rib. Pictured are core members Cody Coe, Ian Turner, and Bobby Nowak, with Jason Krohmer, who appeared on their first album “BANDWIDTH” (Prime Rib Records, 1998). The 2003 release, “FEELING STRANGE” (Prime Rib Records) found the band sans Krohmer, but included Chris Peterson, Vaughn Heilman, and the band’s new bassist, Dave Ray. Okay, I think that’s it. But what about the music? If you’re looking for a hard evolution or maturation from one album to the other, you won’t easily find it. Instead, you’ll find that the core elements of the writing have always been in place with Coe and Turner splitting most of those duties. While there’s an elevated use of harmony blends on the new album, they’ve always been a part of the band’s persona. Fabulous use of acoustic instruments layered with an alternative-rock rhythm line make the majority of the performances a cutting-edge indication of things to come. Some of the tracks are obviously done for artistic value, and they seem to be some of the more interesting tracks. “Why We Said Goodbye” seems to be an experiment that worked. “Reefer Madness” has the makings of an anthem for Rib fans, as I’m certain this is one of their more popular live tunes. For production value, I give these guys a ‘ten’ all the way. Both albums are of EP length, but well worth the purchase. Five years between releases was a shame. Another five years would be a crime. Bio

Formed in the Autumn of 1997, Libra's Rib was founded by Cody Coe, Ian Turner, and Bobby Nowak as an all original hard rock quartet. Ian and Cody are the primary songwriters for the group, though all the songs get treatment from all four members. Libra's Rib played with a number of different bassists before meeting and joining forces with Dave Ray in 2003. Over the years Libra's Rib has diversified their sound to include Americana, Country, and Folk music as well as the original pop/rock core.

Ian is originally from Michigan and was raised on midwestern hard rock and motown sounds. He has been songwriting and playing guitar since the young age of 11. Began performing live at 16 in clubs around Ann Arbor, Michigan. His lead guitar influences include Page, Schenker, Jeff Beck, Frehley, Gilmour, Trower amongst others.

Cody is born and raised in Texas, and has been singing his whole life. His primary musical influence was country but discovered rock music as a young teen. He has been writing songs and playing guitar since then and began performing live in his late teens. With a wide vocal range Cody brings power and poise to whatever song he's singing. As the front man for Libra's Rib, Cody is a natural showman.

Bobby Nowak is from Santa Monica California and has been playing the drums since his early teens. He has been performing live since he was 15 years old. Influences include Bonham, Hakim, Copeland, Peart, Bruford, amongst others. His ability to adapt his style to fit the song reflects his many influences.

Dave Ray is an accomplished bassist from Oklahoma. He studied music and received his degree from University of North Texas. Dave has performed live since his early teens in many bands of many styles including Rock, folk, country, jazz. Dave also teaches bass and participates in rock camps for youth every summer.

Together they combine to form the band Libra's Rib who have been on the Austin music scene for more than a decade. Bringing quality writing, great vocals with rich harmonies together with an entertaining live show. Libra's Rib has received critical acclaim regionally.
