"SHE BAD ‘CAUSE SHE: “FAITHFUL” BY @LIGHTSLASOUL FT. @IMRUSSELLWRIGHT"

I can comfortably bounce to this… this is the new fresh, clean, and sexy. Enjoy!

“Faithful brings a fresh sound for the radio AND the club. Lights puts an uncommon twist on what any girl usually hears coming out the speakers all night. And when that girl says she’s faithful to her man, well, he admits that’s probably (subconsciously) why he came over in the first place. R&B artist and childhood friend W R I G H T lends vocals to a dynamic hook & bridge – Making ‘Faithful’ a problem for rewind buttons everywhere.” - The Greener Side Of Hip Hop

"Slept on But Dope"

Pittsburgh native Lights rocks over a Xaphoon Jones sample as Roc Marciano and Cormega go back to the hood. Speaking of hoods, Reef The Lost Cauze and Haj celebrate theirs.

Lights - "Juice & Patron"

At first glance, a song titled "Juice & Patron" sounds like the exact opposite of a song I would like, but I was pleasantly surprised. First off, I'm a huge fan of Xaphoon Jones' "In the Zone" remix of Foxes' "White Coats." That's the sample "Juice & Patron" leans on before Lights rolls through and makes the song his own. It's a daunting task to really master the art of rhyming over obscurely blippity electronic beats, but Lights does so with such finesse as he brings bars of inspiration over the gentle hums of the sonic backdrop. The Pittsburgh native certainly knows his way around diverse production, and he bends it properly to fit the crux of his message. There is a ton of reflection in the song, where in one moment Lights is ogling at a girl, but the next is questioning his intentions. "My ego adds to my demise, I gotta be hubris," he says, totally self-aware. He rocks shades throughout the video, but clearly he's not blind to the truth. I'm looking forward to what else Lights has in store for us. - Kathy Iandoli (@Kath3000) - HipHopDX

"Lights "Juice & Patron" Video"

Check out Lights "Juice & Patron" Video, the latest video from Lights.

The latest visual from Pittsburgh emcee Lights, directed by Clark Johnson for Noisy Boy & Fated Films. Lights's chances in this game are improving with each new release, and Lights "Juice & Patron" Video is no exception - quite the opposite, in fact. It's a nice addition to the impressive catalogue Lights has been building over the years. We're definitely anticipating the next move.

"On Elevator Music, Lights La Soul brings a fresh perspective to Pittsburgh hip hop “I feel like I’m fighting for the soul of hip hop.”"

In November, Lights La Soul gave Pittsburgh his latest project, Elevator Music. On the album, he explores the existence of his own soul, the current status of pop music, the social realities of black people and what it means to be a hip-hop artist in the light of those realities. With all those themes, one certainly finds a sense of purpose in his music, something Lights doesn’t shy away from.

“I believe strongly that my purpose is to make music,” he explains. “It’s in my family. My mom sings, my uncle played guitar and toured with Ray Charles and Little Richard.”

That purpose has evolved and become more acutely focused since 2012’s Fade to Black, Lights’ criminally overlooked debut.

“At first I just went by Lights,” he explains, “and it was a competitive thing, like, ‘I’m brighter than you.’ But,” he adds, “I added ‘La Soul’ as a way to show how I’m trying to keep everything soulful — either my own personal soul, the soul of my city, the soul of hip hop.”

Along with a sharper perspective comes new content, which seeks to elevate social awareness in hip hop: “Made a movie for Eazy-E but what about Chuck D / guns, drugs, and gangsters never did nothing to me,” he raps on “Black Sheep,” the sixth track on Elevator Music.

But Lights is aware that there is some need for fun and lightheartedness in hip hop as well.

“I like the message of spittin’ knowledge,” he admits, “but not everyone is trying to hear that all the time.” And that lighter approach is illuminated on tracks like “Bowl Hits and Chill” and “Smoke Partner.”

“I definitely want to speak on social issues, I just don’t want to preach on them,” he adds.

Whether it’s exposing the realities of his own life, the disagreement he may have with the approach of contemporary hip-hop artists, or simply providing something to bob your head to, Lights La Soul sees himself as an integral part of the trajectory of the genre.

"Breadwinner by Lights La Soul"

Lights La Soul recently released his movie style visuals for “BREADWINNER” which is a track off of his latest project “DAGO” EP (Dreaming About Getting Out). In the visuals, the films takes getting laid off from a job to a whole new climatic level in under four minutes. The chain of events are predictable once Lights’s character (he plays a cook) receives that performance review meeting voice mail from his boss “Kim” and then overhears her on the phone say “Yeah, I’m gonna fire him after his shift ends”. Yep, in the first 40 seconds you already know its going to be a fucked up day, but its how the director achieves the level of fucked that is surprising. See the visuals for yourself below, and remember, don’t let the “bread” win you. Y’all enjoy! - The Greener Side of Hip Hop

"Pittsburgh artist Lights La Soul releases “Black Dollar”"

“Clearly focused on lyrics, Lights La Soul somehow manages to cruise through this bass driven beat without coming off as conscious – but still being one hundred percent authentic and thought provoking.” - HipHop Canada
