"BROWN BUTTER GNOCCHI AND MORE LOCAL MUSICIANS"

BROWN BUTTER GNOCCHI AND MORE LOCAL MUSICIANS

November 14, 2013
Hello hello! So, I know many of you are probably getting a little annoyed with my very frequent posts about music lately, I know I am a food blog above anything else, but I live in Austin. We are kind of known for music.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you about this really cool band I found recently.

For all of you hipsters, you would love them because they’re kind of really underground.

They are called Light the Sun.

Light the Sun is a funk/rock/pop band based out of Austin, and these guys are the nicest guys you will meet. With music stylings somewhere between Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers, I have no doubt these guys will become at least local, if not national/worldwide, legends.

So I thought I’d be one of the first to hop on the bandwagon and tell you all about them!

I highly suggest you check out their website and listen to some of their music here. And while you’re at it, why not check out their facebook page as well?

Give them a warm welcome, and support.

And you know, you could also try this gnocchi while you’re at it too? Too much persuasion going on? Yes?
Okay, if nothing else enjoy the pictures and this blizzard like weather!
Brown Butter Gnocchi

Ingredients

4 medium russet potatoes

2 eggs, beaten

1-2 cups flour

salt

olive oil

4 links mild italian pork sausage

1 stick butter

16 oz frozen pearl onions

4 fresh sage leaves, plus more for garnish

1 clove garlic, minced

salt and pepper to taste

Directions

To make the gnocchi. Preheat oven to 375F.

Wash the potatoes and place them on a baking sheet. Prick holes in them with a fork and salt well. Bake for 35-45 minutes until fork tender. Take out and let cool.

Then place them through a potato ricer, and mash them good and nice. Beat the eggs, and mix into cooled potatoes. Then add salt and 1 cup of flour. Mix with your hands until you have a dough. Roll out onto a counter and begin kneading like a regular pasta dough. Follow the same rules, kneading until it’s all together. Add more flour if it’s too sticky.

Roll into ropes, about 1 inch thick, and cut into individual pieces. If you have a gnocchi roller feel free to roll them on that, if not that’s fine. Set aside.

Meanwhile, remove sausage from casing, and heat about 1 tbls olive oil in a large saute pan. Cook the sausage until done, remove to a plate.

Melt the butter and let cook until starting to brown. Add in the onions and sage and let cook until onions are tender, then add in garlic.

Place sausage back in and set aside.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil, and drop the gnocchi in. You may need to do this in two batches if cooking all of it.

Let cook until the gnocchi floats, then let cook on minute longer.

Once done Transfer the gnocchi into the butter and onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper, garnish with sage if desired and enjoy!

"Corporate Battle of the Bands @ Antone’s 4/19"

We all enjoy live music and we all enjoy giving back to the Austin community, right? Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could incorporate both of these things into one night? Well, we can this Thursday night because Antone’s will be hosting the Corporate Battle of the Bands, a fundraiser for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. HAAM is a local non-profit organization that gives low-income musicians in Austin the access to affordable healthcare. Every band that will be competing in the Battle of the Bands will be sponsored by a local business. The bands and sponsors that will be featured are:

¦Superheterodyne (Cirrus Logic)
¦Light the Sun (H-E-B)
¦Packet Racket (Anue Systems)
¦Sweet 505 (ChooseWhat)
¦My So-Called Band (George & Brothers, LLP)
¦The Goo Gle Dolls (Google)
¦Earthbound (Heart Clinic of Austin)
¦Driver (HPI Corporate Services)
¦Atomic Large Band (Intel Corporation)
¦Both Feet (Seton Healthcare Family)
After the bands battle it out, winners will be announced for the Grand Prize, Best Cover Band, and Best Original Band. Celebrity judges will name the winner. The panel of judges will include Carlos Sosa (saxophone player for Grooveline Horns), Tim League (founder of Alamo Drafthouse), and Tad Kinchla (bass player for Blues Traveler). Grand Prize winner will receive a day of recording time at Austin’s Bizmeaux Studio and four three-day passes to ACL Music Festival. Best Cover Band and Best Original Cover Band will receive $500 to Strait Music. And that is not all… There will also be a Fan Favorite, which will be determined by which band receives the most donations from the live audience. Whoever earns the most donations from the fans will win an indoor gig at Stubb’s and $500 to Strait Music. However, all donations will benefit Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Pretty awesome!

But wait, there is more! A silent auction will also go on during the event to raise funds for HAAM even further. Some of the auction items include:

¦A Gibson Guitar Rock Star package that includes a private party at Gibson Guitar’s exclusive entertainment relations showroom for up to 50 people with a performance by local musician and former contestant on The Voice Tje Austin and a supply of Tito’s Vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea
¦A Look Like a Rock Star package that includes 2 haircuts from Tate Mayeux of Wet Salon, make-up application with a professionally trained make-up artist at Rae Cosmetics, and a teeth whitening session by Authentic Smiles Dental Studio
¦An Alvarez AD70 guitar autographed by Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel and his musician friends who performed at Ray’s 2012 Birthday Bash
¦A Ben Kweller package that includes a signed copy of his latest CD, “Go Fly a Kite,” and Ben will record the outgoing message of your personal phone line or call anyone of your choice for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, whatever!)
¦And much more!

Who could resist those packages? There are quite a few things we would want on that list, that’s for sure… Once the winners for the Battle of the Bands are announced, an after-party will take place where both Zeale and Learning Secrets will perform. The price of the ticket ($10) for those who attend the Corporate Battle of the Bands includes the after-party, but people can also only attend the after-party if they choose ($5). Tickets can be purchased here or you can click “I like it” here for a chance to win a pair of free tickets. Doors open at 6pm and bands will play until 11:30. After-party will take place immediately after. Keep your Thursday night open and help celebrate a great cause — you won’t want to miss this event!

Bio

Fusing elements from rock, funk and pop, Light the Sun was born April 2011 in Austin, TX. Driven to start a band, guitarist Kyle Stroman teamed up with childhood friend and past collaborative drummer Cody Overstreet. After the addition of bassist Matt Sowin, the trio began crafting their own sound, blending influences that spanned several genres. Joining forces with vocalist Chris Sabanos, another hookup credited to craigslist's history, the group recorded and released their first EP, Ignite (2013).

Ignite combined heavy modern rock riffs and psychedelic melodies and effects, on top of groovy bass and bombastic drums. From there, Light the Sun continued to refine their sound, writing more music and touring around Texas.

In 2015, Light the Sun independently recorded and released their debut album, American Dreamers. Taking more influences from funk and rock, American Dreamers is an expansion of the group’s earlier work. When you search for rhythms you can't help but tap your foot to mixed with high-energy rock, you find Light the Sun. Riding a high from the release of their first, full-length album, Light the Sun is ready to share their heart and soul with you. At their recent release show, loyal fans streamed in and left the cramped venue standing room only.

American Dreamers is a full energy rocker. The first song on the album, The Artist, draws you in easy with a catchy guitar riff, followed almost immediately with light vocals by Sabanos. This quickly grows into a full, anger-fueled chorus, “So what if I am?”. The theme of this song is something many people can relate to, “When you’ve been in a relationship that just isn’t working anymore, sometimes you realize change is necessary,” explains Stroman. The songs on American Dreamers are real relatable life experiences, filled with thoughts that many people have but don’t necessarily want to bring to light. As a whole, the album can be described a roller-coaster of emotions, recounting everything from sex-fueled relationships, alcohol and drug abuse to the paranoia of targeted corporate marketing. The album also has a softer side which is highlighted by the album's love song, Lost. Starting off with a dreamy bass line, the song progressively grows into a rocking head bobber. The album ends on an optimistic note with a beautiful acoustic duo featuring Sabanos and Stroman.

Overall, this album packs a big enough punch with enough variety to satisfy any musical appetite. So do your friends a favor and introduce them to one of Austin’s best kept secrets, Light the Sun!
