"Really Cool Stuff"

ASCAP VP Ralph Murphy comments on L'illon's music as "really cool stuff". - ASCAP VP

""Warrior Angel" Reviewed by RadioIndy.com!"

“Warrior Angel” the latest release by L’illon is a wonderful endeavor and perfect for any pop music fan. L’illon fuses the musical worlds of pop and Latin music together very well, setting the scene for a very ethnic influenced album. Traces of the late Selena can be heard in songs such as “Tu Solo Tu (Only You)” and highlight some well played Spanish guitar riffs. The title track “Warrior Angel” pulls away from the Latin vibe with more of a world music instrumentation and pop sound. L’illon’s artistic arrangements on the CD highlighting her Latin roots but do not let that fool you; this disc is perfect for any lover of female fronted pop music.

“Love Story” is a catchy bit of Latina pop that takes on equal parts of
Shakira and Gloria Estefan; that is to say, both older and newer
representations of the style are included. Rather than limiting herself
to a smaller subset of fans, the overtures that are made here on this
introductory track will ensure that anyone lucky enough to happen onto
the album will be sticking with it for the long haul. “Shy Guy”, for
example, goes onto the route taken by Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) and
ties in the aforementioned Latina influence with amore classic
alternative type of sound, while “I Wonder” has all the magic and wonder
of a Sixpence None The Richer.

Taken together, the tracks on “Warrior Angel” truly construct an idea
for listeners of whom L’illon truly is, and what musical artists and
genres have ultimately shaped her during the recording process for this
album. “Tu Solo Tu (Only You)” is a bonefide hit, as L’illon puts forth
everything that she can to keep up with a very flashy and intense
guitar/drum dynamic. It is the narrative created by these vocals that
makes all five minutes of “Tu Solo Tu” slide by like they were nothing,
feeding nicely into “Thief of the Night”. “Thief of the Night” continues
the Latin influence but is fundamentally different from anything else on
the album. This is due to the fact that there seems to be hints of
smooth jazz placed at strategic points, coupling with these vocals to
appease fans of all ages, be they tuned into the seventies, eighties, or
even later music.

“Untouchable” is another track that breaks from the sound approached
during the earlier tracks on “Warrior Angel”, using a slower tempo to
shine a spotlight on the nuances of L’illon vocals. Where a great number
of artists are unable to keep things fresh over the course of an entire
album, L’illon is able to keep things spiced up and interesting. The
disc’s final (and titular) track, “Warrior Angel”, uses influences as
wide as Enya, Disney soundtracks, middle Eastern ambience, and
prior-pursued elements to make something that both settles everything
brought up during the album while setting things up nicely for L’illon’s
next album.

With the recent release of her highly anticipated, stylistically eclectic indie debut album Warrior Angel, Washington, D.C. based singer/songwriter L’illon does more than simply break genre and cultural barriers. The multi-talented visionary artist forges a groundbreaking path into a dynamic new realm she has coined as “Lucid Pop,” a modern sound that blends classical, world and pop elements and creates a musical mood unique from any other.
While L’illon likens her fusion of sonic colors “a kaleidoscope designed to get the listener to a place of destination,” one of her fans best expressed the way it’s making thousands of people feel: “sing along tunes with masterfully effective lyrics, Lucid Pop will not leave your memory.” ASCAP VP Ralph Murphy adds simply that it’s “really cool stuff.” When L’illon told Murphy about the unique crystallization of her songwriting—a process which begins by being open to impulses, emotions, people, and new experiences --he said, “You really are a different kind of muse.”
Throughout the ten tracks of Warrior Angel, L’illon’s compelling sound is intensely patterned, blending bass and guitar grooves, percussion rich beats, surprise string and wind riffs and an emotionally powerful vocal presence that pulls it all together. From the fast, hip swaying opener “Love Story” (a song about possibilities and surprises that sets the exciting uptempo groove) to the more intense mystical title track, and the enigmatic “Sweet Surrender” or the Lucid Pop tango “Tu Solo Tu” (that will get people dancing and romancing for hours), these songs create a musical vision focused on both today and tomorrow.
Rather than begin with music or lyrics first, she lets them merge together as she’s creating her incredible songs, “like the Tigris and Euphrates rivers coming together.” Beyond simply asserting her gifts as a multi-faceted songwriter with the ability to turn hard core rockers into pop fans, classical music lovers into Latin music aficionados, L’illon infuses the ten tracks on Warrior Angel—with a sense of empowerment that can inspire people in these uneasy times. Her belief is that in an era defined by financial uncertainty, music can—as it has been during past times of crisis—be a healing force that helps us feel individually and collectively better about ourselves. Her sound strives to openly address the highs and lows of life, portraying these with insight, compassion and resolution.
“Listening to Lucid Pop,” L’illon says, “you can feel a new spark of sensuality and vibrancy so that everyone can feel cool, modern, and sexy in their own skin”. She continues, “I like to think of it as part of a new musical revolution, drawing from ancient tones, melodic filagree, harmonic complexity, nostalgic old school, blues, pop, rock and modern grooves. I draw inspiration from the classical composers I admire like Verdi, Beethoven, Chopin, Rimski-Korsakov & Saint Saens, as well as modern songwriters like Prince, Jewel, Sting and U2. It’s important to fight for change that is good and I’m excited to share this new vibe of music with the world.”

Judging from the response to the songs on Warrior Angel, the world is quickly catching on and embracing the future of music as L’illon is creating it. Last May, the album won a RadioIndy “GrIndie Music Award” (Independent Artist Music Award - Best New Music 2009) and tracks from the album have hit #1 in 13 different music categories—totalling 23 #1s--on the influential site www.radioindy.com.“Warrior Angel,” “Thief of the Night,” “I Wonder” and “Love Story” hit #1 in the pop category, while “Warrior Angel” and “Smile Once More” went #1 on the International chart. The other genres include Soft Rock (“Sweet Surrender”), Latin/Spanish (“Tu Solo Tu”), Love Songs, World, Dance, Lounge, Contemporary, Country (an irrepressibly sensual shout out to a “Shy Guy”) and Fusion Pop. “Untouchable” was #1 on the licensing driven Advertisement chart, while “Warrior Angel” hit the top spot on the Film Music list.
