"Lily Virginia - Album review"

Dream folk artist Lily Virginia’s debut EP draws comparisons across the musical spectrum. When it seems like it might be one thing it shifts and metamorphoses into something completely different. It never loses its voice or direction while doing so which is the sign of a musically advanced artist.

Virginia is backed by a powerful three piece band. Both Johnny Simon Jr & Paulo Tomaselli are guitars with Simon being the main presence in the first three songs. Ayal Tsubery plays bass and Alessio Romano is on drums. Their knowledge in arrangements gives the impression that they all could be session players, or have been. Few four songs tell a more complex story than this. “Dreamtrain” is a journey filled with luscious images that builds in a thunderstorm of emotion. “It’s You” is a gorgeous love song with traditional folk roots, mirrored in drums and guitar. “Can’t Help Myself” could be a single and draws comparisons to Catie Curtis. “Yuriko” is filled with reverb and distort and a heavy hook.

Lily Virginia is a myriad of artists. Listening to the EP the dream pop of Kate Bush and Tori Amos leaps to mind. It is mixed with the full force of folk of Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, and Catie Curtis. The fact that she can’t be pigeonholed is the strongest reason to watch her. She can easily be a headline tour in EDM and rock pop circles. If she plays as well live as this EP sounds, it is a wonder she hasn’t been signed yet. Bio

She keeps a cow skull under her bed.

"In my defense, he's kind of like a protector,
maybe a shaman or a dreamcatcher... besides, where else can I keep him in
NY?"

Once you hear Lily Virginia's music it all makes
sense. You can almost hear those bones, feathers, shells - forgotten
exoskeletons - scattered throughout her songs.

Raised in the wild hippie west of California, Lily Virginia has lived a few
different lives. From studying music in Argentina and Brazil, to a 7 year stint
as a ninja, to love, heartbreak, and magic, she's carefully folded these
experiences into her knapsack of songstories. She unpacked her bag in Brooklyn
and has called NYC home ever since.

She's has played all over NYC at venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, The Rock Shop, Sycamore Lounge, Union Hall, and Petes Candy Store as well as throughout the NorthEast including
Boston's renowned Club Passim. An accomplished songwriter, she completed the 2013 BMI Songwriters Workshop and has had her music placed
in film and on major network TV (ABC).

She revealed her debut EP on March 8th, 2014 with a
specialized project for each song. Her artistic collaborations  explore the
intersections of audio and visuals, the interplay between technology and
music and how to bring the extraordinary into the ordinary. Her purpose throughout her songwriting, performance, and projects, is
exploring human connection in our modern day lives.
