"KICKBACK SUNDAYS selects XO Tha LimeLight Prince to open for DEVIN The Dude in Houston"

What started off as a really small crowd of people with a chill vibe, turned out to be one of the best KICKBACK SUNDAYS yet!!

Even with the BET Awards on, that did not stop our show from pulling a great crowd!! I was already irritated because Stuffferz would not be serving the burgers we have come to love but the Houston heat had taken it’s toll on me!

So we started with a friendly cypher and by 8pm, we were underway! The talent was really good tonight, a few new faces made it to the list and they held their own! We saw a lot of great performances by some consistent KICKBACK SUNDAYS artists. From Sir Splexxx, Young G, Don Linen, we saw stage presence and confidence. From Daniel Alexander and Nick B. we saw the definition of turn up. But tonight was the night, we would see 4 great artists face off for the chance to open for Devin The Dude on July 5th at The Toc Bar in Houston.

The 4 finalists were Duck, XO, Big Fatts and Retro Kash. This was not going to be easy. All of these guys were very capable of winning. All of them had stage presence and crowd appeal, which is why they made it to the finals.

I told the crowd we were about to begin the finals and called all 4 artists to the stage. Susie suggested to have the artists to pick a number, which she wrote on 4 pieces of paper, to see the order of performances. I then announced the number for each artist so the crowd would know!

Up first was Duck. This guy has been consistent with his performances and it shows. He is already a crowd favorite. The question was, will Duck do the same weekly routine or will he put forth the extra effort making tonight special. Well, Duck responded with “too turned up to go home”! He set the bar very high. At one point he had people on the stage as well going crazy! All I could see was a sea of people rocking “Duck Or Die” shirts!! That was real! Any promoter in the room could actually “see” the fan base!!

The second artist to hit the stage was Retro Kash. I believe Retro has performed about 5 times at KBS, but one thing for sure, he improves every week and is a real contender. He walked on stage with a LV duffle bag and an Old English 40oz! It was gonna be one of those nights!!!

Next up was XO. I wondered what tricks he had up his sleeve! But actually XO, took his famous KBS favorite, Dead Bodies, and turned it up a couple notches! At one point, XO had the crowd put their lighters in the air and they did! That was so dope. Reminded me of a rock concert.

The last finalist to perform was Big Fatts. After winning numerous Golden Passes, killing performances and cyphers, we would see what Fatts would do for a finalist performance. I was curious because Fatts is really good. He didn’t disappoint either! He commanded the attention and got it.

So now, it’s time to select a winner. We had a few people whom we trust on stand by in the event of a tie. We had the 4 artists stand next to each other on stage as we called each name, the crowd would vote by applause. We informed the crowd that they could only make noise for one artist. We say this because whether the noise is positive or negative, it still counts as noise! We also cleared the stage of any extra people and let the crowd know they could not pound on the stage to increase the noise factor for anyone. Now, it was time to pick a winner.

All performers got a really loud response but the first to be eliminated was Retro Kash. So now there were 3 artists left. I called for the crowd response again. Susie was at the end of the stage monitoring the crowd so that there was no double voting. Who would The supporters of Retro Kash vote for now?

We called the names in the order of performance. Ducks’ name was announced and it was loud. No doubt this was going to be difficult! Then I asked the crowd “if you want to see XO open for Devin The Dude, put your hands together”! The response was deafening. We calmed the room and asked “if you think Big Fatts should open for Devin, make some noise”!! The crowd responded. Due to the no double voting, it was hard because Duck and Fatts are label mates and we had to make sure the folks that screamed for Duck didn’t make noise for Fatts. But, it was still loud because a lot of The supporters of Retro Kash cheered for Fatts. However, one more had to be eliminated and this time it was Big Fatts. So now, there were 2! Before I could even call for the next vote by noise situation, the room erupted between the supporters of Duck and XO!!!!! All you could hear was the screams and chants of “Duck! Duck! Duck!” And “XOOOOOO, XOOOOO”. Then they 2 sides broke out into song!! Screaming “Dead bodies on the Floor (XO’s signature track) and Too turned up to go home (Duck’s KICKBACK SUNDAYS anthem)”!!
Even with myself on the mic trying to calm the room so we could get the final vote, it was not happening! The crowd took over Club Numbers, they were literally too turned up to go home!

Now the final moment was here. It was Duck and X - www.kickbacksundays.com

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I’m from Houston, TX. I moved all over the city during my childhood, from Kingsrowe Apartments on the south to Northwest Pines Apartments on the north. So I’m good on all sides (lol). I love my city though, but I guess you can say I’ve been in love with music since birth.

I’ve been singing and writing songs before I could spell what I was trying to say correctly. I used to record myself on a radio until I recorded my first song around 10/11 years old with Bruce Latin and producer’s Rowe Ent. That’s when I really knew there was nothing else I wanted to do. I started rapping at the age of 12, me and my big brother J-boy started Thugs on tha Run but that was more of a family clique than a music group. I hooked up with Cash Jundi at 17 and it’s been LimeLight ever since. Cash makes the beats and I eat’em.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
Well, the song is called Dead Bodies and it’s really a cutthroat, take no prisoners, type of song. When I wrote it I was just venting, I had just lost my little brother and was almost about to call it quits. I made the song and maybe 3 or 4 days after I recorded and I performed it at Kickback Sundays (a local Houston hip-hop underground venue) and the crowd response was way more than I expected; they loved it.

Now I can’t go nowhere without somebody seeing me and saying “dead bodies on tha floor” if they heard the song and that really means a lot to me knowing what the song means to me and my feelings for the song. I’m glad that everyone likes it so we’re pushing it. Gotta give the people what they want.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Not giving up; finding that thing that keeps you humble, motivated, and hungry. Make your weaknesses strengths, yet stay true to yourself.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
Like I said, we moved around a lot when I was young. So there was a time where I had no way to record, no ride to the studio. It kinda made me think it wasn’t my dream, maybe I’m not supposed to be this great entertainer. Then I ran into Cash Jundi, he was starting the L.I.M.E. and just getting his feet wet with the music and we just clicked. I bounced back by just grinding, spending nights in the studio hours and hours of overtime trying to make up for what I missed.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Janky promoters, self doubt, getting lazy. Remember this is a business.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Lets bring real hip-hop back. Real music in general: real soul, jazz, blues, and R&B. We need all that back. Don’t stop fighting for your dreams. Network, network, network.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Performing. I love to be on stage. I feel like when I’m not on stage I’m just sleep walking through life, but as soon as I hit that stage I come alive . You get to see all of me when I perform Life In My Environment.

Bio

Xo Tha LimeLight Prince born and raised in Houston,TX what he refers to as Space City, grew up all over the city coming from his early years on the South Side, to his teenage years on the North Side growing up with a undeniable gift for music and performing.By the early age of 10 he caught the eye a local producer Bruce Latin from Producers Rowe ENT. there he started to hone his craft and develop his versatile set of skills. First only recording R&B songs influenced by the likes of The OJays, Jodeci, Al Green, and newer contemporary acts that his mom raised him on untill he started freestyling at the age of 13 thats when that changed and his focus switched to rappin and his love for HipHop took over and that was that. Soon following him and his brothers formed a group ThugsOnThaRun and they worked together with producer Bruce untill Tha Prince moved to the other side of town and things became stagnate for the next couple of years due to the distance of the studio from where he now lived and other small factors he was going thru in life at that time. Those couple years it was few and far between studio sessions he said but his passion and drive kept him going knowing when he found a new home to record he could start to get his dreams out of his head and make them into a reality. Skip fast forward to 2005 where he linked up with Cash thru Cashs younger brother I told my brother to bring him thru a session and the rest is history, weve been fam ever since said Cash. Since there initial meeting hes been down with the whole LimeLight Team putting in work everyday day in and out bieng one of the featured artist on L.I.M.E. volume 1 and also bieng a key artist on L.I.M.E. volume 2 leading up to his mixtape Xo Tha LimeLight Prince presents YOUNG HOUSTON which was released March 2012 and his upcoming album Life Styles of the Broke and Famous due out January 2013 with new projects on the horizon and talent and a work ethic to go with it Xo Tha LimeLight Prince is set to carve out his place in todays Hip Hop scene vowing to make timeless music for his generation and for the generations to come.
