"Russian soul helps fire up Folklorama"

What's this
Kickin' off the Russian pavilion on the first night of Folklorama was Kalinka, a beautiful young dancer with quick feet and lucid movements.

The performer started an hour-long show which followed the search for a lost Russian beauty and featured a character similar to the devil.

"We decided to use a more Russian fairy tale," said Sofia Barklon, co-ordinator of the pavilion, of the new show. "It's all very famous."

The Russian pavilion has been around five years, so Barklon decided it was time to switch things up, though she has held on to some tried and true elements.

"For five years, we've opened with Kalinka," said Barklon.

Some other memorable performances came from Limpopo, a Russian folk group that had the crowd clapping, yelling and singing along and two young male dancers who were way beyond their years in muscle strength.

"All of them were born in Russia," Barklon said of the performers.

Limpopo's members are Russian-born but now live in Los Angeles.

FIRST APPEARANCE

They have visited Manitoba many times for events like the Winnipeg International Children's Festival, but this was their first appearance at Folklorama.

At various times during its performance, the four-piece band uses balalaikas, trombones, accordions, keyboards, clarinets and drums.

Beyond the stage, the dumplings or "pelmini" at the pavilion are scrumptious, and a blini is like a crepe, only tastier.

SHOW: Limpopo, an energetic Russian folk-rock band from California, brings to mind the Irish Rovers and is quite entertaining. The band's performances were flanked by several dance numbers with a strong ballet influence.

"Awaiting Revelation"

Limpopo!

I don’t have internet access at my apartment so whenever I want or need access, I use the WiFi at a friend’s place. But sometimes the house internet goes on the fritz. When this happens, I just connect to one of the unsecured networks in the area. My favorite one is called, “Limpopo.” It’s my favorite not only because it’s reliable, but because it is just so fun to say. Say it with me. “Lim-Poh-Poh!” Ain’t it great?!

We’ve been using that network on and off for months now but haven’t had any idea what it means, if anything. Until tonight, that is, when curiosity got the best of us. Tonight we used the mighty power of the InterWeb to do some sleuthing. Turns out, it’s not nonsense, or even a Spanish word like we originally suspected. “Limpopo” is the northernmost province in South Africa. A province named after a river by the same name.

But that’s not all! “Limpopo” is also the name of a Russian “Folk-N-Roll” band from the mid-80s. It’s actually on record that one curious Limpopo fan asked the band members what “Limpopo” meant. Apparently each one of them told the guy that it meant, “elephant butt.” And it gets even better…

I’m betting every single American over the age of 5 has actually heard this band before. By some stroke of luck, a big-time ad executive heard Limpopo play and liked their quirky style so much that he encouraged them to audition for a TV commercial spot. They got the gig. So does this sound familiar?

“Give me a break, give me a break. Break me off a piece of that KitKat bar!”

So there you have it. Limpopo. Unsecured wireless network. North African province. River. And the band responsible for the KitKat song. - C Brow

Our Rating:
Listening to Limpopo (http://www.limpopo.com) one cannot help but to be massively entertained. The most impressive thing about Limpopo is how much fun these guys are definitely having.

If your house parties are getting a little bit dull and predictable, I beg of you to slip a little Limpopo into your stereo and see what happens. Your most crusty house guest will be up on the house top in their underwear with a beer bong, sucking down a dozen raw eggs, and screaming at any Italians in the crowd where Rocky can go and what he can do when he gets there.

If you want to get to the essence of what Limpopo brings to the table, put in the title track. It will get you moving faster than an Olympic sprinter on a Starbucks bender. Then go to "Po Rumochke." That song should be played by any boss who wants to get any employee moving just a little faster. The only downfall to the great Limpopo is that I cannot in good conscience recommend anyone listen to them while driving. I was and it prompted me to do dangerous things in a half-ton moving vehicle.

Unreal.

These guys may be a Russian folk band, but these guys rock. It is impossible to not be moved to do something when you listen to these guys. Throw in a little bit of blues and more than a little bit of jazz, put it in the blender and sprinkle on some comedy and you have one of the most entertaining groups I've ever heard. I cannot overstate the impact you will feel if you listen to Limpopo.

I get the feeling that Limpopo is a band that plays for each other and the pure joy of performing. Whether it be for themselves in rehearsal or playing for the President of the United States (they played for President Reagan during a private welcoming party for the Gorbachevs), they seem like a band that just wants everyone around to be having as much fun as they are. Listen to this release and you yourself will be going "bop, bop, bop" all night long.

Great - excellent 'craftsmanship', especially excellent singing - during the last hours listened to all songs with constant delight - and above all I like your witty video "Ask The Nature": perhaps the only way to deal with this global warming business, making people think and change their acting...Best wishes,Angelika - Angelica from cdbaby.com
