Linda Wood

Linda Wood

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

If Kate Bush had balls she might sound like this. With wholesome sassiness and musicality reminiscent of Doris Day merged with Rickie Lee Jones, Linda delivers melodic, eclectic 'quirk-pop'. Spacious, groovy and organic.

Biography

ARTIST DESCRIPTION

If you want a sweaty moshpit, conquest rap or edgy punk, go somewhere else. But if you're looking for intelligent, thought provoking lyrics, music with a sense of space, lush vocals, unusual instrumentation and a groovy beat, then this is probably up your musical alley.

That alley is not dark and foreboding. It's the sort of alley you may find traces of Doris Day, Dusty Springfield, the Andrew Sisters and Ella Fitzgerald. It's a place Rickie Lee Jones and Tori Amos might meet for a drink and have a jam. It would have lots of colour and funky little chairs and cafe tables. And you could sit in that alley for hours listening or chatting, reading a book or dancing a little salsa. In fact, make yourself at home!

Linda’s 'left-of-centre' pop style songs mix hip-hop beats, a bit of blues and jazz with very groovy rhythms and some eclectic instrumentation. With great story-telling and a hint of characterisation, the product of her background in musical theatre as well as rock, soul and pop covers bands, Linda's live performance has inspired such descriptions as “silk to the eyes, ears and throat… the audience love her as she is warm, friendly and vocally wholesome …. A complete package.” (Iain McGuire, Artistic Director of Mad Cow Theatre Company)

ARTIST HISTORY
Based in Sydney, Australia, since 2007 Linda has performed as a solo artist. For several years prior to branching out on her own Linda performed with a vocal trio called “The Bettys” performing covers for parties and corporate functions. As part of the “Santa Bettys”, a Christmas incarnation of the group, Linda has performed on ABC statewide radio in Australia, singing an inventive a Capella rendition of Ray Charles’ arrangement of Jingle Bells.

Linda Wood has also lent her musical and theatrical talents in recent years to “Leader of the Pack” (Central Coast production), “Downtown” (a musical tribute to the 60s pop scene in Britain) “Straight Up Rogue” (a jazz revue) and “Back to the 80s”.

In September 2006 Linda worked in New York directing the vocals for “Angels” (see www.angelsthemusical.com or www.myspace.com/angelsthemusical), a workshop production staged at the Duke Theatre on 42nd Street at Time Square*. Linda played a supporting character role for the recording of this production in Sydney (July 2006) as well as writing most of the vocal arrangements and conducting the studio ensemble.

In 2008 Linda performed live around the South West of England promoting her album “Duel”. Returning to Australia in mid January 2009, Linda is performing regularly in and around Sydney whilst working on songs and concepts for her next recording project which will be more than a treat for the ears. "I have so much I want to say creatively and it won't all fit into the medium of song!" Linda promises to come up with something even more enjoyable and surprising.

Lyrics

No Place

Written By: Linda Wood

There’s no place like home
There’s no one like a friend
There’s nothing like your own bed
Nothing, no-one, no place like home

I am a curious creature
I want to travel, see the world
I picture myself in different places
Meeting different people, doing different things

My imaginings are clever
What I conjure up encourages me
But in the activation of the dream
Reality, it convinces me

There’s no place like home
There’s no one like a friend
There’s nothing like your own bed
Nothing, no-one, no place like home

Adventurers are made for stories
We love to read them, tell them, over and over
So much pleasure in the telling
We suffer for a tale to tell

We swim in the coldest water
We burn our feet on the hottest sand
Pitch our tents in a hurricane
Or so we say when we’re home again because

There’s no place like home
There’s no one like a friend
There’s nothing like your own bed
Nothing, no-one, no place like home

Rien de mieux que chez soi
Rien de mieux qu’un ami
Rien de mieux que son lit
Non rien – de mieux – que son chez soi

There’s no place like home
There’s no one like a friend
There’s nothing like your own bed
Nothing, no-one, no place like home

Grandma Amoeba

Written By: Linda Wood

I was looking at my infinitely great Grandma the other day
Down the lens of a microscope
And I asked her if she had any wisdom she could share
‘Cause I figured I could use all of the help that I could get
She seemed to understand me when I told her that I felt
There was no meaning to my life
She didn’t speak, couldn’t hear or see at all
But I’m sure she felt the same

Grandma Amoeba
It’s good to see ya
Grandma Amoeba
You and I are kind of the same
Grandma Amoeba
If I start to get to know you
Maybe you can help me find
Please Grandma Amoeba help me find the reason why
I’m alive

I hope you didn’t mind that I was staring at your insides
I never asked you if I could
But there’s a link in our communication that’s still missing (missing link)
So excuse me but I think that this is for our good
It must be great to change your shape so easily
With me, I have to exercise
If you could share the secret I would be so very grateful
And I’d be rich before I die

Instrumental

Grandma Amoeba it’s good to see ya
Grandma Amoeba it’s good to see ya

Grandma Amoeba
It’s good to see ya
Grandma Amoeba
You and I are kind of the same
Grandma Amoeba
If I start to get to know you
Maybe you can help me find
Please Grandma Amoeba help me (find the reason why)
(Repeat)………..I’m alive

Peter Pan

Written By: Linda Wood

Peter Pan © Linda Wood 2004

In my dreams I see earth from the sky
I feel the wind and the clouds go by
I’m certain I was born to fly
But here I am when I open my eyes
Standing on the ground

Small hopeful child with paper wings
Jumping off steps and ladders and things
Fairy dust lives in a childish grin
So many years, what a state I am in
And Tinkerbell’s gone

Peter Pan, you mock my dreams
Don’t grin your silly grin at me
Where’s my Tinkerbell and fairy dust
I’m jumping and flapping and nothing is happening

Weightless I drift on a sleeping tide
Holding my breath with my arms open wide
Gold glitters down in the deeps where I dive
Seaweed and sand cannot check my desire
And sirens sing

Swim to the moon and dive into the stars
Light is a fluid I keep in a jar
Toast to the health of a dream in my heart
Loveliness grows in the cold and the dark
And it falls like rain

Oh Peter Pan, you mock my dreams
Come take my hand, oh please take me
To the heights above the sky
Visit the stars, take a tour on a moonbeam

Duel

Duel
? Linda Wood 2005

Seems like I can smell
The sweat and the dust here
Waiting in silence, my
Holster is ready
(You try to) shoot me with letters
Titles you’ve earned
Your mind is so puffed up
You cannot aim straight

It’s dark inside your mind
It’s dark behind your eyes
You’re working for a mystery
(I’m gonna take away your keys)

Thank you for boasting
Naming the challenge
My blood is pulsing
Through my veins
My eyes are open
I’m still and I’m ready
Oh can you feel it?
The wind has changed

It’s dark inside your mind
It’s dark behind your eyes
You’re working for a mystery
It’s dark inside your mind
Your pride has made you blind
You set the clock but not the time
(You can’t control the time)

INSTRUMENTAL (mid 8)

It’s dark inside your mind
Your pride has made you blind
You set the clock but not the time
It’s dark inside your mind
It’s dark behind your eyes
You’re working for a mystery
(I’m gonna take away your keys)

You have been used to easily winning
I have been waiting for this day
(Ooh wah ooh)
Such a long time

Two Doors

Written By: Linda Wood

I stand before two doors
Caught in a moment of choice
My heart is travelling
And soon the rest of me will follow

Celebrations and tears
Eulogies, speeches and songs
Future voices call me here
Pleading with me now to follow

A door brightly adorned with flowers
And a jewel-encrusted frame
Such beautiful poetic words
Engraved with a latin name

A plain wooden door and knocker
A plain lintel and frame
A lonely choice with no-one cheering
And few will remember my name

Standing before these two doors
Caught in a moment of choice
My heart is travelling
And soon the rest of me will follow

Be wise
Be smart
Choose carefully my heart
Don’t let appearances blind you

I will follow my heart
Please choose carefully my heart

Bittersweet

Written By: Linda Wood

I went for a walk with sister Joy
Sister Sorrow tagged along
I asked her to leave the two of us alone
But Joy insisted Sorrow would help me know her better

I asked for a drink of laughter
But Sorrow gave me tears
Joy said tears make the finest wine
And Sorrow agreed so we cried and drank together

Thank you sisters for your wisdom (Chorus)
Now my life is sweet
Tasting bitter grapefruit, sour lemon
Is a treat

Sorrow took me by the hand
And took me to the edge
Of a river deep and smooth as glass
Where I was kissed and stabbed by my own reflection

Joy was the first to dive right in
And Sorrow beckoned me
“If you stay there on the edge you may never drown,
But you’ll never know the feeling of surrender to the water and swimming.”

Thank you sisters for your wisdom
Now my life is sweet
Tasting bitter grapefruit, sour lemon
Is a treat

Pain is holding me with the sweetest touch
Feels like the deepest longing
Sorrow dug the well
Joy filled it up
