Article Text:
Hometown: West Ossipee
Occupation: Folk Singer/Songwriter
Synoposis: A part-time manager for the Common Man Restaurant chain, Mazurka hosts the Live at Lago songwriter showcase Monday nights at Lago Trattoria in Meredith. He recently released his first solo CD, "Shapeshifter."
1What were your early experiences with music?
I'm a child of the '60s and '70s. I grew up listening to classic rock like the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, and to folk musicians like Bob Dylan. I started playing guitar when I was 14, and I guess you could say I'm largely self-taught, sort of learning by doing. The first live concert I saw was the Kinks in Providence, R.I., in 1979. The girl I was with ditched me, and I had to make it back to New Hampshire on my own.
2Who has influenced your music the most?
Bruce Cockburn, who's known to many as Canada's Bob Dylan, as well as Roger McGuinn and George Harrison. Tom Pirozzoli taught me a lot about performing on stage. So did Ned Chase of the band Truffle. I learned a lot from watching the last two over the 20 years I've been performing, and always liked the way they interacted with audiences.
3What about your first solo CD?
I'm excited about it. It has Rick Habib from Dreadnaught on drums, and it's being marketed through Independent Artists Company. It's getting lots of play on independent stations. It's my second album. I was the songwriter/guitarist for the folk duo Evensong, and produced the 2000 release "Away We Go," a collection of my songs sung by my sister, Lauren Barrett, who is a classically trained vocalist.
4Why did you start Live at Lago?
Live music performance is something of a dying art. There are fewer and fewer places where people can go to listen to live music. There are a lot of very good songwriters and musicians around the state, and I wanted to have a place where we could showcase their talent. Lago has given us a place to get together and play.
5How has Live at Lago worked out?
I'm really happy with the way things are going. We've got over 100 hours of podcasts, and there's a lot of good, new music that people can listen to. For me, music is life. It's what gives it meaning and purpose. I like sharing it.
