"Saunders brightens with acoustic guitar pop"

By Shea Conner | St. Joe Live | 0 comments

Earlier this year, Lindsey Saunders earned a partnership with Taylor Guitars. From time to time, she'll be featured in the company's Facebook posts and its magazines. She might even get a guitar out of the deal whenever she really needs one.

It’s a pretty sweet break for a skilled young artist like Saunders, but she doesn’t seem to care much about the career opportunities that could come with Taylor’s backing. She’s just genuinely excited to be associated with the brand.

“It’s like the most flattering thing in the world, and it’s extra exciting for me because I was raised on Taylor Guitars,” explains Saunders, a 20-year-old from Boulder, Colo. “I got a Taylor on my sweet 16th. I didn’t even have a party. I just got a Taylor.”

That one statement seems to fit Saunders to a tee. After all, she’s a guitar geek encased in the shell of a potential pop star.
She began playing the guitar and writing songs at the age of 12, and as she grew up, she drew from the virtuosity of John Mayer and the song structure of Tool as much as the pop sensibilities of Stevie Nicks and the ‘90s alt-radio rock sounds of Alanis Morissette. By the time she ventured into a studio to cut her debut EP “Nothing Normal” at the age of 17, her goal was clear. She wanted to lay relatable pop music over a foundation of intriguing guitar instrumentals.

“I always try to explore a different way to go about pop music,” Saunders says. “And when I say pop music, I don’t mean Lady Gaga. I mean something that’s easy to listen to and something that’s accessible and interesting for people.”

Musically, things line up just right on “Nothing Normal,” a semi-biographical five-song CD about an introvert becoming comfortable with her identity. Catchy hooks and slow burns make “That Way” one worth the listen, while driving guitar strums, captivating tempo changes and building vocals power the song “Make or Break Us.” Between her unique brand of pop rock and a message of strength in self-discovery, her music could fetch those who like ZZ Ward just as easily as Vanessa Carlton fans.

That said, everything Saunders does is just a little more guitar-centric. In fact, writing lyrics sometimes come as an afterthought. “Make or Break Us,” for example, started as an instrumental piece with a stellar bridge.

“That was the particular part that I wanted people to hear, and I felt like it would have more punch if I added lyrics,” Saunders says. “... I didn’t expect it to turn out the way that it did, but I’m glad that it turned out the way it did.”
It wouldn’t be the only time Saunders drew something musically rewarding from the unexpected. In 2013, she collaborated with her cousin and dance choreographer Catherine Tiso to compose and perform the score for a modern dance piece called “Paths Diverge” in Chicago. Playing an acoustic guitar with alternate tunings, Saunders painted a sonic portrait of an artist at a crossroads in her life. The four movements of the instrumental score portrayed a task, a decision, questioning and acceptance. Saunders says the project brought her a great amount of creative joy.

“You can break a lot more rules with an instrumental song than you can with a pop song — and I’m all for that.”
Both parties were so pleased with the work that Saunders has decided to release all four songs in an upcoming EP. She also says another pop EP is in the works for next year.

In the meantime, she’s touring the country and picking up fans. Saunders will make her way to St. Joseph next week as she performs at 10 p.m. Sept. 10 at Cafe Acoustic.
Her tour comes on the heels of performances at Cafe Wha? and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, as well as showcase slots with Access Films and Koffeehouse at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and the Red Gorilla Fest at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
While 2013 and 2014 were both pretty good to Saunders, the coming years should be even better.

“I have a lot of music I’m excited to get out there,” she says.

saunders-1
Lindsey Saunders, one of the most promising and most talented young singer-songwriters to emerge in the last year, appears at two local venues in the next wee: Chaplin’s in Spring City, and The Grape Room in Manyunk.
Area music fans may be unfamiliar with Lindsey Saunders now but that won’t last long. Saunders, who is one of the most promising and most talented young singer-songwriters to emerge in the last year, will be making two area appearances in the next week.

Saunders will perform at Chaplin’s (66 North Main Street, Spring City, 610-792-4110, http://chaplinslive.com) on August 31 and then a few days later will have a show at the Grape Room in Manyunk on September 2.

“I’ve played shows all over the West and Midwest but this is the first time I’m coming through your part of the country,” said Denver-based Saunders, during a phone interview this week from a tour stop in Chicago. “I visited New York once but none of the other cities in the East. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Saunders will be performing songs from her debut EP “Nothing Normal” along with a number of new, unreleased tracks.“I’ve been singing forever,” said Saunders, whose resume includes performances in New York at the CMJ Music Marathon and showcase slots with Access Films and Koffeehouse at the Sundance Film Festival. “I’ve been writing songs since I was 12 — eight years now.

“Music runs in the family. My dad taught me guitar when I was I middle school. He had a cover band and I’d sing songs with them. I pretty quickly got used to performing in front of people — especially since I was in musical theater and plays at school.

“It didn’t take long for me to develop as a songwriter. I was playing gigs on my own by the time I was a senior in high school. Then, I decided to forego college. I wanted to concentrate on my music career.”

For Saunders, her music career as a singer/guitarist has been a D.I.Y. effort.

“There are so many things you have to learn when you’re promoting yourself — from learning Photoshop to make show posters to dealing with business contracts,” said Saunders.

“So far, my only release has been ‘Nothing Normal.’ My next EP will be all instrumental. I write a lot of instrumentals. I composed a score for a modern dance piece and that music will be the next EP.”

Catherine Tiso, a top-flight modern dance choreographer from Chicago, invited Saunders to compose and perform the score her modern dance piece “Diverge/Connect”. “The music piece I wrote for the dance production is called ‘Paths Diverge’ and is composed of four different songs,” said Saunders. “It was fun to stretch myself — to take Catherine’s vision and make it mine.”

Saunders’ music features her strong vocals and impressive technical skills on the guitar. She is equally at home composing instrumentals or writing pop tunes.

“One of my biggest influences is Tool — especially their drummer Danny Carey,” said Saunders, who performs with her band out West but is just a solo act on this tour.

“Rhythm is one of my favorite things. It’s definitely influenced the way I write. Other influences are Fiona Apple and the other alt-girls from the 90s — and, of course, Stevie Nicks.

“The instrumental EP is just something I wanted to do for myself. After that, I’m working on another pop EP. I’ve had the songs for awhile. I have over three hours of original pop music that I’ve written in the last year.”

The show at 7 p.m. on August 31 at Chaplin’s is billed as “Open Mic Night featuring Lindsey Saunders” and tickets are $4. The show at the Grape Room (105 Grape Street, Philadelphia, 215-930-0321,www.graperoommusic.com) will start at 10:30 p.m. with tickets prices at $5.

Other shows at Chaplin’s this weekend will be Steve Madonna on August 29 at 7 p.m. and a multi-act bill on September 1 at 7 p.m. featuring Life on the Sideline, Home Again, Brosef Gordon Levitt and Whatever We Are. Tickets for either show are $10.

The Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, 610-649-8389, www.ardmoremusic.com) has a variety of shows on tap for this weekend beginning with a performance by Splintered Sunlight on August 28 (9:30 p.m., $10). - The Times of Chester County

"Indie Country Singer-Songwriter Lindsey Saunders Comes to the Grape Room"

Written by Ari Roth

Lindsey Saunders is a young, country-tinged singer-songwriter with a rapidly growing audience. Saunders bases her songs around her powerful voice and deft acoustic guitar, but the rich and propulsive drum, bass and electric guitar backing provided by Dean T. Maltese, Sean Blanchard, and James Christopher contributes to the sound immensely. Belying her age, there is a rare maturity and refinement to the 20 year old Saunders’ music, and she is supremely gifted both as a songwriter and as a performer.

Lindsay_Saunders

Following her breakthrough EP Nothing Normal, Lindsey Saunders traveled across the country, both solo and with her band, playing shows and accruing fans in 13 states at such high-profile events as SXSW in Austin and New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon. Now, she prepares to showcase a new side of her artistry with the release of “Miles Before Sleep,” a brand new instrumental suite comprised of music that she originally composed for dance.

2014 will see the Denver-based Saunders sharing her music with a wider audience than ever before, and an upcoming stop in Philly is an exciting prospect. Saunders will play here on Tuesday, September 2nd, at The Grape Room, located at 105 Grape Street in Manayunk. "Quick Hit: Lindsey Saunders"

I get way more adult alternative submissions than I cover, which makes it surprising that people keep sending me AA releases. But every now and then, one bubbles up to the top and knocks my socks off. Lindsey Saunders‘ Nothing Normal EP is that rare AA release.

Lots of people can sing, and lots of people can write great songs. It’s rarer than you’d think to find people who do both. Saunders’ strong, clear alto fits on top of strong, tense songwriting with easy command. In opener “Change My Mind,” she powers through the chorus with attitude, passion, and control–another set of adjectives that are not often invoked together. Saunders moves from Goo Goo Dolls-style pop to country/soul on “Make or Break Us,” and it’s a neat turn. The chord-based guitar work here is surprisingly tight and complex, resulting in another memorable track. “That Way” shows some intricate finger-style guitar work, revealing yet another facet of her sound. Throughout all of this, Saunders’ strong voice leads the way. - Independent Clauses

"Folk-Rock Review: Lindsey Saunders"

Lindsey Saunders made a real impact on the 2013 national indie music scene after releasing her debut EP Nothing Normal in October 2012 at the age of 18. Nearly two years later the EP still resonates with incredible energy and validity. When you look at that engaging smile and those big blue eyes, Saunders looks like the girl next door but trust me, she is much more than that.

After listening to this amazing 5 song EP I can assure you there is Nothing Normal about this young lady. Her talent for singing a tune and spinning a yarn is off the charts good!

Saunders’ acoustic guitar playing is very good and her voice is strong enough to rise above all the music to make it the perfect complement to all the sounds. Essentially what her vocals provide is another instrument to the mix.
One listen to “Make or Break Us” or a glimpse at the video of the track provided will put everything I have said into proper focus. What a fantastic track! Her voice, the guitar playing and the words pack a knockout punch. One line goes “When did you realize I would be more than you thought I would be?” as she sings to her former lover as he walks off with the new girlfriend. “We're Never Through” sounds like a sequel to that track with the words and music once again making a huge statement.

This is a young lady on a mission with enough fire in her eyes and belly to push any obstacle out of her way to get where she wants to go. There is more fire in her soul than every red hair follicle on her head. I am so impressed with the command she has of her voice and instrument. It blows me away to know she is not a star yet. This EP music puts the multi-million selling crap on the radio to shame.

Lindsey Saunders you have got it going on and people in the music biz better wake up and smell the coffee or you will be known as the big fish that got away.

"Lindsey Saunders is MusicZeitgeist.com's Indie Artist of the Month for February 2014"

n the short time since we were first introduced to indie artist Lindsey Saunders, we already in danger of becoming a lifelong fan. What some have called a ‘triple threat’ (a statement we are happy to underwrite) Saunders’self-confidence is backed up by a voice that walks a tightrope between a raspy alto and quivering vocal runs, prodigious, nuanced acoustic rhythm guitar smackdowns, and taut, unorthodox roots-inspired songwriting.

Though Saunders admits she has been compared to everyone from John Mayer and KT Tunstall to Chris Cornell, we also drew comparisons to Hayley Williams of Paramore, Splashdown, furslide, Led Zeppelin and even Lyle Lovett.

MusicZeitgeist.com had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with the multi-talented chanteuse and focus the lens on how it all comes together. We are happy to have grabbed the interview with the blue-eyed, charismatic artist amid her busy schedule that will invariably lead to widespread success and recognition.

MuzicZeitgeist.com: Give us some background about how you began and arrived at this moment

Lindsey Saunders: I grew up in a musical family and consequently share an interest in all kinds of music. It started with a desire to sing and turned into a passion for guitar and songwriting. These skills developed simultaneously with the help of YouTube, Nashville Songwriter Association International, my dad, and a cover band organized for church and charitable events.

I guess Lindsey Saunders Music went “pro” in 2012 right after I graduated from high school; thanks to the support of family and friends in addition to a producer who believed in my potential, ‘Nothing Normal’ was released when I was 18. Flash forward – I went from performing at local coffee shops to playing shows nationally as a solo act and with my band.

Interviews and performances on television and radio, as well as multiple indie music magazine feature articles both nationally and locally have made the last year exciting to say the least!

MZ: Talk about the style of music you create and the influences that helped craft your sound

LS: Since I have admiration for all styles of music, my approach is much like piecing together a creative puzzle using bits and pieces of jazz, pop, acoustic – even some progressive rock and classical music – and fits this together into a completed creation that listeners of many genres seem to enjoy.

Lindsey Saunders album cover
As a songwriter my goal is to create songs that are musically complex and interesting, yet comfortable and familiar. Because of this, the easiest way to describe my music would be to say it’s indie pop/rock with a progressive flavor if one had to create a genre “check box”.

MZ: Where can people experience your music?

LS: The breathtaking front range of Colorado is my home. I love it here, and I think that sentiment that can be heard in my music. I perform regularly at local venues in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Aspen and Colorado Springs. This last year I was able to perform at Reggie’s Music Joint in Chicago as a solo act, at the historic El Portal Theater in Los Angeles with my band, and showcase at the prestigious CMJ Music Marathon in New York City.

I just got back home from Park City, Utah, where I performed in Access Films Music and Koffeehouse Music showcases during the Sundance Film Festival. I put the hashtag #livingthedream on my Instagram posts when I’m out on tour…it’s kind of crazy how much life has changed since this whole thing really got rolling.

The Lindsey Saunders YouTube channel has exposed my music to people from around the world, and as a result I’ve received interest from people wondering when I will be touring in Mexico, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and Paris. Truly amazing!

MZ: Talk about the business of doing what you do…

Since my very first performance I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. Not that I’m grown up, but being a professional musician is a full time dream “disguised” as a job. It takes lots of work. The cool thing is that practicing and writing are two things that I love to do.

Having the ability to do home recordings and music videos from my practice studio is pretty amazing. It is a job, but wow what a profession I have! My hopes are to be doing this for another fifty or sixty years at least!

MZ: What’s next from your camp?

LS: The next big thing for listeners to look out for is my instrumental EP to be released later this year. It is in the mixing phase of production – tracking was completed at Seahorse Studios in LA last month. Now is the second fun part – the naming and the creation of artwork that compliments the essence of the compositions.

This project was born from the fact that I actually was asked last year to write for a modern dance production called ‘Paths Diverge’ choreographed by Catherine Tiso, which was performed live in Chicago.

With this release we hope to produce music videos that capture the movements that inspired the music as well. The foundations for a full-length release are being put into place as well, using the same indie sensibilities towards creating what I know will be a new collection of captivating songs.

In the big picture I of course have the “winning Grammy” dream. More important than that I want to keep writing music that people connect with, sing along with, and can’t get out of their head.

It looks like The Lindsey Saunders Band will be on stages from Austin to Chicago, Los Angeles to New York this year. I do hope that if you are reading this you look for me in your area, and let me know where you want me to perform. Let’s make some music together?

"STOLI THINKS THE GRAMMYS COULD HAVE USED SOME LINDSEY SAUNDERS"

Hello out there music lovers of earth, hope you are all well. I do not want to overindulge on the Grammys but if you go online & thru social media you hear a lot of negative. All I have to say is you do not have to listen to that mainstream pop and if you spend time on Skope and many other sites there are thousands of awesome bands/musicians that would love you to be a fan. That is a promise for sure. I also want to note what David Bakula, SVP Industry Insights, Nielsen Entertainment said, “despite shifts in how music is consumed, we see continued growth in overall music consumption, with more than 118 billion streams in 2013 reported by our data providers, which is the approximate revenue equivalent of 59 million albums purchased, the industry remains vibrant as consumption continues to change and expand. 2013 was also great year for creative album release events.” According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Pandora & Youtube are the top streaming spots. Now lets get to my guest today Lindsey Saunders who is as talented as she is beautiful. Her sound & songwriting simply force you in and do not let go, and that is okay with me. Join us today as Lindsey speaks on her EP “Nothing Normal”, judging females musicians, the video for “Make or Break Us”, and so much more!

Stoli: Where are we talking from today and how is 2014 so far for you?

I’m in Colorado as of now, and so far 2014 is bringing a lot of adventure and excitement for me with lots of touring which is awesome!

Stoli: If you have two goals for the new year what would they be?

If you’ve listened to my music, you probably know that I play and write with acoustic guitar, but a big goal for me is getting more acquainted with electric. I’d love to see how it factors into some of the new songs I’ve been working on. That and playing Film on the Rocks or any show at Red Rocks Amphitheater, a goal I’m sure just about every Denver artist has set for themselves!

Stoli: You have an amazing voice that is contagious. At what age did you realize your talent and decide to pursue music as more than just a hobby?

Thanks so much! I’ve been singing forever. I was the geeky little 4th grader who got her dose of popularity (short-lived as it may have been) every time the annual talent show rolled around. But everyone knows that it’s hard to make a living off music. Because of that, I had a few other ideas about what I was going to be doing after High School and it really wasn’t until my senior year that I made the official decision. Believe it or not, my parents gave me the freedom to decide for myself which setting would best help me develop as an Artist. I considered University but for me, learning by doing has always been more productive! If it weren’t for them I’d probably be in school getting C’s and wondering what I was doing with my life.

Stoli: I am blown away at your EP “Nothing Normal” and the fact you released it at 18. What would you say has allowed you to be so driven and ambitious to put out such music at such a young age?

Well, it’s like the expression goes, “If you do what you love, you won’t work a day in your life”. When I wrote those songs, I didn’t necessarily feel driven or ambitious. In fact, I had a lot of mixed feelings because I knew I was supposed to be working on getting some decent grades so that college was an option. When I was writing, it felt like I should be doing homework, and when I was doing homework I knew I wanted and needed to be writing. It’s nice that people view my work the way you do, because it validates that I put my time into the right things. It’s proof that when you put your heart into something you really do get out what you put in – and it also saves you from wasting a whole lot of energy.

Stoli: Would you say that your friends & family have been supportive of your music journey?

Yes, yes and yes! There’s absolutely no way I’d be doing any of this without them!

Stoli: How long were you writing & recording “Nothing Normal” and where can we grab a copy?

The music was written over a span of two years, but the recording itself – at least my part of the process – took about a week. We worked really fast on that. Two days of rehearsal with the band, two days of tracking with the band, and one day of my vocals. Needless to say, it’s done now! And you can order a physical copy off http://LindseySaundersMusic.com, or a digital one from just about anywhere: iTunes, Amazon, my web site, listen on Spotify or SoundCloud – you name it!

Stoli: I love your song “Change My Mind.” What is that song about and what inspired you to write that song?

“Change My Mind” is what I like to call an “angry chick song”. There’s a lot of angst in that one. The funny thing is that none of those songs are actually about anything that happened to me at the time. I used to think that my music told the future because any time I’d write a song it would have nothing to do with what was going on with me, but somehow I would always end up being able to relate to it later down the road. In a way, it seems like these songs came to me. Not the other way around. They just sort of happened!

Stoli: I watched the video for “Make or Break Us.” Who came up with the concept to the video and how it relates to the song?

I actually came up with the concept for the video. I must have driven Andrew (the director) crazy because I changed a lot of things at the absolute last minute! At first I wanted to make some kind of statement about female empowerment or sexism and I was going to be the lead female in the plot, but then I had a change of heart. I want my music to relate to as many people as possible. Not just women. I don’t think Make or Break Us is a song that only women can relate to. It’s about standing up for yourself and deciding which things about yourself you’re willing to change for someone and which things you’re not willing to change at all. I see a lot of guys struggle with that, too. So instead of the female being the “victim”, I decided to switch it up. Then I made myself a narrator in the whole thing, which is really more what I am in real life.

“Make or Break Us”
http://youtu.be/rcJOPZI5N9g

Stoli: You are obviously very pretty. Do you feel like female musicians are not only judged on their music but image and do you think that is fair?

You’re making me blush! To be honest, I don’t think it’s just women that are judged on their appearance. There definitely is an “ideal” look for men in this industry as well and while perhaps it’s not quite as severe, it’s just as unfair. I was really tempted to leave myself out of the album artwork for that reason, but in hindsight it was a good decision for me because I think it makes an artist more real to people when they can recognize you in person. Lucky for me, I have the power to control how “sexy” my branding is. Yes, I happen to be a size double zero, but I can’t help it! Believe me, sometimes I really wish I had more curves! But at the end of the day that’s really not what it’s about. I like to think that even if I didn’t look the way I do, I would still own it because it’s so important to be honest with your audience. Call me an optimist, but I think people value authenticity, even when it comes down to physical appearances. Besides, what IS pretty anyway? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Stoli: How much time per week is devoted to your music and do have any other hobbies or interests besides music?

It changes from week to week. My schedule can be really crazy sometimes but I try to do at least two hours of music a day just on my own. Then there’s band practice, which is two nights a week for three hours each. Then there’s whatever shows I might be playing in a week, which range anywhere from an hour to three hours. All that together easily takes up half of my week, and that’s not counting all the other things I’ve been learning along the way when it comes to business stuff. Putting together a full band has been a huge investment of time as well as learning about ProTools, syncing audio with video and understanding how management teams work. I’ve been working toward being as self-sufficient as possible in those areas.

Stoli: If you were to have a Pandora radio station, what three musicians would be on there as well?

Good question! I’d like to think it would be John Mayer, KT Tunstall and Chris Cornell.

Stoli: What is coming up for Lindsey Saunders and where you @ online?

Something that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I write instrumental music as well as pop, so I’m about to release an instrumental EP which will feature the music that I wrote for modern dance choreographer, Catherine Tiso in Chicago. I also have a lot of new pop songs that people don’t know about that I’m going to continue getting ready for release. I’m really excited to play Colorado International and Sundance Film Festivals plus SXSW. "Artist Spotlight: Lindsey Saunders"

Name: Lindsey Saunders
Age: 19
Genre: Singer-songwriter
Location: Erie, Colorado
Found Out About DeliRadio: Through her social media manager.
Next Tour Date: Oct. 19 at the Paper Box in Brooklyn.

“I don’t know if you know anything about growing bamboo,” solo artist Lindsey Saunders said, “but it takes years to grow. These farmers, it literally takes them like seven years to see any growth, but they keep watering it. And one day it just explodes.”

Saunders was using the maturation process of the rigid plant as a metaphor for the long-term vision of her music career. It’s a refreshingly levelheaded perspective for a 19-year-old singer-songwriter, especially in an era where thousands of artists are uploading videos to YouTube at this moment, twisting their fingers for a viral miracle.

Hailing from the tiny town of Erie, Colorado, Saunders crafts catchy, acoustic-driven pop-rock with purpose. “I want to communicate the things I find really important in life,” she says. “And I think, especially in America, everyone’s dying for something real in the music industry. And I want to be that, if I can.”

Saunders has released one EP so far, 2012’s Nothing Normal, and is currently penning songs for her upcoming debut, while working two day jobs— one at a shoe store, the other nannying— and regularly gigging around Colorado. “It’s basically equivalent to having three jobs,” she said, “but it’s totally worth it. I know I’m not going to be rich tomorrow. And that’s okay.”

Her songwriting career began at an early age, when her father started teaching her guitar. "My dad would show me a chord or something," Saunders said, "and then I’d take that to my room and be like, ‘What can I write with this?’”

When asked about the Colorado music scene, particularly in larger areas like Denver and Fort Collins, Saunders was beyond positive. “The music scene is exploding,” she said, “but it’s still good to be a big fish in a little pond. Whereas when you’re in L.A., everyone is doing music and art. Colorado isn’t quite like that yet, but it is a good place to be an artist.”

So far she’s played gigs in L.A., Chicago, and Phoenix, and is in the process of planning a trip to New York City for October. Ultimately, Saunders wants to make a living off her music and tour more, but she’s willing to invest the time it takes to do that.

“You have this life you’ve been given, and the I feel like the best way you can use it is to not feel like you’re wasting your time,” she said. “I view every minute, and every hour, and every day, as something that’s really important. And something that’s a gift to me. I don’t really have the right to waste that on doing something that isn’t making me feel alive, and in turn, isn’t blessing other people.” - DeliRadio

"I hate to get deep, so early in the conversation, but it's hard for me to talk about music writing without being extremely deep."

Depth. Colorado-based Lindsey Saunders certainly has depth. It is immediately apparent that she is much more than your average singer-songwriter. She Possesses an impressive desire to be something more, and has the ability to deliver.

Lindsey combines an extraordinary vocal range with a striking sense of orchestration to produce a musical canvas that is sophisticated well beyond what one could anticipate from an emerging artist. Her tracks demonstrate a casual discipline that never feels forced, and a complexity that intrigues but never alienates.

"I certainly want to make my songs accessible to people and relatable, but at the same time, something that you can listen to over and over again and get something out of it each time. As a musician it needs to be musically interesting and maybe not what you would expect...but also not difficult to listen to as an average listener."

In an overly cliche' moment, it would be easy to observe that Lindsey's impressive combination of musicianship and vocal prowess fits her comfortably in the exclusive club of legendary female solo artists.

"To be honest I didn't listen to that many female artists. I do like artists whose lyrics are emotionally intelligent. That's something that inspires me a lot, because I think that often it's easy to get lost in either the musical or lyrical side and leave something out. I want to be an artist that is able to develop both and combine them in well in a song."

So where does all this come from? Musically speaking, her inspiration comes from some wide-ranging sources.

"It started off with more of the folk musicians, especially folk musicians of the 70's, such as James Taylor. As I started to branch out as an individual, the progressive rock thing definitely influenced a lot. I really wanted to learn a lot more about progressive rock. I guess it comes through in my music."

Lindsey's current release is appropriately called, "Nothing Normal."

Read that as "something special," and without a doubt everything genuine.

"I try to be genuine and honest about who I am, especially in the way I write songs. Music is such an honest thing, there's no way around that. I like to have sort of an organic-ness about life and being able to write about that. Ultimate,y, it's about having someone relate to what you're writing about. At the end of the day, if it's not helping someone along in their path, it's not really worth that much."

"Lindsey Saunders - "Nothing Normal""

Lindsey, out of the Boulder CO area, released her five song EP “Nothing Normal” last fall. It is a refreshing compilation of songs, that doesn’t rely on a lot of special effects. My favorite song off the EP was “Take Me Out”. The song starts out with just Lindsey’s vocals and a simple guitar, the drums don’t kick in until almost the one minute mark and you know what, it works.

“Make or Break Us”, is another song simple in the use of instruments. Lindsey proves you don’t need electronics, keyboards, and synthesizers to make a good song.

Lindsey started writing and performing her own music when she was 12. released “Nothing Normal” when she was 18. She will be performing in LA and Chicago during the month of August. You can get exact dates and locations on her website at http://www.lindseysaundersmusic.com ”Nothing Normal” is one EP worth checking out. - Front Range Scribbles

"Nothing Normal"

Songwriting - 4.0 || Music - 4.0 || Vocals - 4.0
Web: www.LindseySaundersMusic.com
Location: Erie, Colorado
Genre: Pop-Rock/Singer-Songwriter
Key Tracks: Every Song....

Lindsey Saunders is a freak of nature, wearing a crown labeled 'exceptional talent'. After
listening to her 6 song EP release, Normal Normal, you will concur with my claims unless
you just can't hear very well. We found her on Twitter after she responded to one of our
free reviews tweets for artists who have great music. Truth-be-told, of the 30-some odd
replies, she was the only artist worthy of a free review.

Every song Lindsey's, Normal Normal, release are well produced, written, arranged, and
sang. Lindsey's voice is flat out beautiful on every single track. Most artists with major
record deals in music today use Auto-Tune to sound the way Lindsey does naturally. As
a record producer in and out of the studio with plenty of radio/chart topping artists who
have record label's backing them, I can truly say that this young artist deserves it more.

Of all the songs on the project, my favorite song is "Change My Mind". This song is a
radio hit waiting to happen. It's sassy, cleverly written, and the music production is Grade
A. The melodies, vocals and overall arrangement reminds me of something I would hear
from great artists like Stacie Orrico to Natalie Imbruglia to Christina Aguilera. Change My
Mind is a very good song that deserves to be heard by fans of singer-songwriter/pop
music.

But don't let that description paint the wrong picture of who Lindsey Saunders is as an
artist. Not bound by pop music, she's a bit more rock/singer-songwriter on most of the
project, and this fact is evident on songs like "Take Me Out", "Make Or Break Us", and
"That Way". I can definitely see a great deal of success in Lindsey's future with music if
she keeps making great songs like the ones on Normal Normal. - I Am Entertainment

"Lindsey Saunders - star in the Making"

Lindsey Saunders has been around music all her life and can't remember a time she wasn't singing. She recalls a story about how, when she was a child, her father (one of her biggest musical influences) would sit crisscross on the floor and let her sit on his lap and strum the chords while he played James Taylor melodies. Now she has released a CD and her music is available for download on iTunes. Graduating high school this year. Lindsey has already accomplished so much! Not only has Lindsey made singing her life, but she has also become a well-known Colorado musician who performs "Acoustic Pop." For Lindsey, music is the perfect outlet to express her thoughts and emotions.

When asked to describe how she felt about her CD release, only one word came to mind; blessed. While she acknowledges that she has worked hard on her music since middle school, she admits that she was "in the right places at the right time, with the right people." When it comes to nerves, she likes to leave hers just the way they are explaining that it just means she cares about her performances.

When Lindsey performs, she likes to be comfortable, stating that, "there is nothing like wearing heels and having a guitar strapped onto your back." Likewise, she explains, how she wants her music to speak for itself and doesn't like to wear anything too flashy. Lindsey's style can be stated as comfortable with a bit of edge. She is usually seen in baggier styled jeans with a tighter form-fitting top ( Currently she is into flannel tops). Some of her favorite items include black combat boots and her array of beanies. Recently, style wise, she excitedly went on about how she had gotten into studding her clothes. She explains how she bought some pronged pyramid studs and has been applying them to everything from her shorts to belts.
