Bio
Lindsey Schust is a composer, percussionist, singer-songwriter
& pianist from rural New Hampshire. An artist with many hats, Lindsey works in many different musical styles and artistic platforms. Her first solo CD was “Dónde Está mi corazón” all-Spanish with Afro-Cuban inspired rhythms. Her Afro-Cuban song “Café con leche”, from that album, won an award in the Global Rhythm songwriting competition in December 2006. Also from that recording, her piece “Mama Lele” was nominated for a “Just Plain Folks” Independent Music Award in 2009. The album received radio play and charted on a few stations including Ottawa’s “CHUO” 89.1 (“Latin Train” and “Orígenes” programs) and the program “Rumba y Son” on Radio Planicie in Lima Peru.
She also directs her band “the Ragged Mountain Band”, writes songs in a variety of genres and writes instrumental music. She performs in the Lakes Region and records her own music. Since 2011, she and her band have been recording and producing concerts and music videos. The “Official Hippie Hill Music Video” can be seen on YouTube. Their next video “Country Way” will be coming soon.. Lindsey co-directs of the Songweaver Drumming Ensemble, with Grace Schust at the Concord Community Music School, in Concord NH. Lindsey team-teaches drum, dance and song workshops, residencies, and classes with Grace Schust throughout New England. Also known as the Timbre Drum Ensemble, Lindsey and Grace are members of the New Hampshire Council on the Arts’Artists Roster.
Lindsey received a B.A. in music, cum laude, from Brandeis University and an M.A. in music composition from Tufts University. Since 1990, Lindsey has studied with African and Afro-Caribbean master drummers from Mali, Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal, Ghana, Trinidad, Haiti and Cuba. Her primary teachers include: Babatunde Olatunji, Sikiru Adepoju, Joe Galeotaand Issa Coulibaly. In addition, she has studied Afro-Cuban percussion in Cuba with Jacinto Herrera and classical new music composition with composers David Rakowski, Yehudi Wyner, and John McDonald.
