By Heidi Cyr

Drummond native Line Rioux, will be among the province's best during this year's Music New Brunswick week, wich will take place in St-Andrews, May 17-20. this annual gathering is to promote musical talent and for New Brunswick artists to share skills through workshops.

Last year this event took place in Edmunston where Rioux promised herself, she would be up on stage at the next event.

"My goal will be reality, soon. I envied the other artists who preformed and wanted to be part of it soon."

this year she will have her own showcase on May 18 among the province's cream of the crop.

"I will be able to meet and maybe jam with musicians who have years of experience in the business, like Chris Colpaugh and the Cosmic Crew and many others," Rioux explained. Among the participants, 44 artists were chosen from hundreds of applicants who will have the opportunity to have their own showcase. This is a great opportunity fo Rioux who just finished her bachelor's degree in classical music from the Université de Moncton.

"This is the first time I will bring my own compositions, my own pieces for I have written the word and the music. I look forward to share my stories and my background with other participants."

Rioux's style is her own. She used all he past experience for a mixture wich comes together to create a unique sound.

"In the past , I have done some alternative, some jazz and my degree is in classical music. All that mix, I call that the Line Rioux style," she described, saying she is inspired by everyday life when she writes her songs.

"My past takes a big part in my songs, sometimes it<s hard to talk about... One of my lyrics is about how a photo is important for memories. Another is about Alzheimer's, an illness my grand-mother sufferes from and how I can't give her the help that I wish I could. Until now my songs are sad ones, but I beliece that when all the bad stuff is out there, the beauty will emerge."

Since her move to Moncton for her studies she has the chance to work and hang our with many musicians. "I work with 'Les Paĩens' and met-up with Fayo last week. I made a spot for myself in the business here in Moncton."

Rioux who will take the stage with pianist Joel Robichaud, fells ready for the event.

"I'm proud to have been chosen to participate in different contests and is completing her demo. "I was chosen to take part in "Trois-Pistoles en Chanson" smi-final. For the first time I will compete in singer-wong writer category. This contest is scheduled for July 21-28."

Another show wich Rioux will take part of is the "Return to the Roots" concert at the Richelieu Auditorium on June 9, where Rioux will share the stage with Christianne Bélanger, Annie Levesque and pianist, Julien LeBlanc.

"Classical singers to perform at Richelieu"

by Heidi Cyr

Just out of university, three young singers originally from the Grand Falls region will gather their talent to offer a concert titled "Return to the Roots". This concert wich will take place on June 9 at 8 pm at the Richelieu Auditorium will showcase what they have learned while at the University of Moncton, where they all recently finished their bachelor degree in classical music interpretation.

Mezzo-soprano Christianne Bélanger and Sopranos Annie Levesque and Line Rioux, the trio will sing some Broadway tunes and some popular opera and will be accompanied by Julien LeBlanc on the piano.

"We want to offer a gift to the public that have followed us when we started to sing. We all graduated from university together and this concert is for the Grand Falls community who believed in our talents," Christianne Bélanger explained. "It<s a celebration of the knowledge we have acquired trough our hard work," Annie Levesque said. "We are all friends and we work well together, following a discussion we decided it would be a great idea to be on stage together," added Line Rioux. She explained that by joining forces to prepare a concert, will be better and more subtantial then if they gone at it alone.

Their repertoire is quire varied, but this show will include different opera tunes and a few well known Broadway songs. The girls have been working to put together this concert since September. They said it was hard work but a learning experience, for it's the first time they had to take care of everything from the marking, the production and the musical arrangements.

"I want to folks that attend our concert to say we are hard workers. We have evolved since our beginnings and it's quite obvious," Rioux stated.

The idea is to show the audience that it is possible to come from a small town and make a career in classical singing.

"I want folks from Grand Falls and the rest of the region to see we can make it in the arts. Opera is alive and still current," Bélanger added.

In fact, Bélanger and Levesque will pursue their masters Degree in Classical Interpretation at the University of Montreal next September. On the other hand, Rioux teaches singing at the conservatory in Moncton and takes some time to write music and songs, a passion she has developed during her studies at university.

(July 2009)
