SYS Exclusive Stream: Lions and Creators – “Better Days”
Posted on December 9, 2015 by Max Qayyum
We’re excited to share with you the debut record from Minneapolis ambient-indie duo, Lions and Creators. Made up of Tanner Groehler & Ryan Worthley, they first released an EP, Growing, in 2011.

Now, they’re ready to share their debut album, Better Days, after a two year break. It will be released on the 18th of December, and can also be pre-ordered here. Scroll down for a full stream!

“To me this record is about finding myself again. We had broken up for two years and I was working through some turbulent mental health and couldn’t seem to figure out what I was missing. At the beginning it was a kind of cathartic healing process that eventually turned into something a little confident and obsessive over the year that we recorded it. It ended up feeling like a narrative of me slowly unraveling how to live again.”

""Growing" Album Review"

The thing about this EP that stands out to me the most is how concentrated it is. It has its spacey moments, but it’s never so much that you really get lost in it, as can be the trend with ambient, or ambient influenced bands. The pounding drums, the tight guitar work, all of this contributing to a well put together release.
Lyrically, it centers on a theme of home. Specifically longing for it, even when knowing one must eventually leave. This is evident on "Hunger Blood", where the singer mentions "Places we had once been, but never were again", as well as "The wolves of our demands, whose hunger blood thickens, and beacons us back home". The lyrical content also appears to be very introspective. Lines such as “We will never love ourselves, with these boundaries” from “Hands”, or “I have grown to know that we are all the same in the end”, from “Spaces” carry a certain weight to them, and may cause the listener to really take a look at themselves.

In addition to taking time to reflect on one’s own issues, there are moments of interrogation here as well. On opening track “Shut Up, Leopold”, lead singer Tanner Groehler calls out: “Do they write your name on the walls? Can you feel them staring?” which provides a chilling, yet fitting start to the EP.Speaking of vocals, they are at the perfect balance of not overpowering the instruments, but not fading into the background to be forgotten. Upon first listen, it's apparent that while they might not be the main focus of the songs, there’s certainly no lack of effort here.

This is a decidedly short release. And in situations such as this, it’s important that a band use the time provided wisely to generate enough interest for repeated listen. Thankfully, this is an opportunity that Lions&Creators take full advantage of. - Absolutepunk.net
