"Lipstick, Laughs & Blues"

A big surprise at last Thursday's blues jam at Mari's Place in Quincy. Local songwriter Suzanne McNeil had her two cohorts in town for the week, Iowa's Jill Miller and Nashville's Diona DeVencenzi. The three songwriters all have solo careers, but bond together for Lipsticks & Laughs, a trio that weaves songs, stories and comedy about being a woman, family, and relationships into their shows.
Coaxed onstage by jam-master/guitarist Russ Costa,
the gals tore it up, with McNeil singing a blazing take on Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," and the threesome trading leads on an extended "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." The backing band included Costa, Berklee College of Music prof Jon Finn on guitar, Boston Symphony Orchestra violinst Gerry Mortis, and the legendary local percussionist known simply as Pablo.
As it turned out, the trio's Friday night performance at Granite Links was rained out, but they did appear on WBZ radio's late-night Jordan Rich Show, with songs and interviews running from 1-2 a.m. Saturday. - Patriot Ledger

Bio

Lipstick and Laughs combines stories and songs to inspire, motivate and empower women. Acoustic arrangements, rich harmonies, meaningful lyrics, and a good dose of humor are what sets Lipstick and Laughs apart from the same old keynote experience. Exploring topics unique to women, they can touch an audience in a unique way…. through the power of music. Their message is delivered in a way that is honest, sometimes irreverent, sometimes serious and oftentimes funny, but always entertaining!

Five years ago Diona Devincenzi (Nashville), Jill Miller (Iowa), and Suzanne McNeil (Boston) met at a songwriting conference in Nashville, TN. Five years and a reunion lunch later, they decided to come together as a cooperative to perform a Nashville “in the round” style show and bring that intimate, acoustic, listening experience to other parts of the country.

All based in separate cities and all having their own solo careers, they bring their own twist to the party. Separately, their musical influences run the gamut from folk to pop to jazz to country to rock. Together, their sound is a sonic confluence of those American styles and textures….with the additional “fairy dust” that comes from three artists who love what they’re doing.
