"When You Look At Me"

To my knowledge, county musicians are few and far between around these parts, but when you find one – man, are they good. Very much is the case of Lisa Barrett. Her newest release When You Look at Me is probably one of the most uplifting and refreshing records I’ve personally heard in a while.

The big selling point of the record is obviously Barrett’s soaring vocal work. They are at all times fresh and comforting and on par with that of country heavyweight’s Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain or an Alison Krauss. Her voice doesn’t falter, crack or even fade at any point on this CD. It stays sensitive and soothing the whole time.

Speaking of her vocals, her lyrics are smart too. Let’s Roll is a majestic tribute to those who perished on 9/11 aboard United Flight 93 and it even has been entered into the national archives for future generations of historians and educators to study. She deals with all sorts of sensitive issues such as heartbreak, loneliness, standing up and being strong, and knowing when to leave bad situations.

One overwhelming theme through the record is the remembrance of her nephew Austin, whom she lost to cancer. She named the CD after something she said to herself when she was looking at a picture of him, and the title track of the record, When You Look at Me, is about him as well.

Aside from all of the deeper meanings housed on this CD, the music is good. Overall it really reminds me of Shania Twain’s album, Up!, very poppy and upbeat, and clear, crisp, and meaningful throughout. This is one of those records that you can pop into your CD player no matter what mood you’re in and it will cheer you up or make you think – whatever you need. It is definitely a mood changing album.

What makes this CD better than the music itself is the fact that a portion of the proceeds from this CD will be donated to Essential Care for Children, a pediatric home care program for children with life-threatening illness, and their families. For more information, check out

The CD is currently for sale over at for only $11.99 and free shipping! You cannot go wrong with a great price for a great CD.

"Words and Music"

The new CD from Batavia singer/songwriter Lisa Barrett, entitled When You Look At Me, certainly pulls at the heartstrings with the story of how the album came to be. Inspired by nephew Austin, who tragically passed away at only 2-years-old, Barrett wrote these songs in his memory, including the sadly beautiful title track. Barrett finds room for some up-tempo selections as well, mostly in the country-rock vein, like the spirited, honky-tonkin', "You're Shakin' Me Down." Not only does Barrett make some fine music, she also helps the cause of childhood cancer (which her nephew succumbed to) by giving a portion of every CD sold to Essential Care Program for Children. - Freetime Magazine

Album - "When You Look At Me" Recorded in Nashville, TN. Many songs from this CD are currently being played on radio stations all over the United States and Europe.

My name is Lisa Barrett, and I am a Singer/Songwriter from Western New York. I wrote my first song in memory of my nephew Austin, who lost his battle with cancer just shy of his 2nd birthday. Music has always been prevalent in my family. Writing became the grieving outlet I had been searching for. After the first song about Austin, many more songs followed, and I'm still writing today!
I was given the opportunity to record an album of all original music in Nashville in Spring of 2005. They gave my songs a life I could never have imagined! Since then, I have started my own record label called Black Boot Records.
The part that touches me the most is that I'm donating partial proceeds from each CD sold to a Hospice for kids program called Essential Care for Children, in Austin's memory. Essential Care is a home care pediatric program for children with life threatening illness.
I am also very proud to share with you that Song #1, "Let's Roll", has recently become part of American History! I wrote it as an upbeat tribute to the heroes of Flight 93 on September 11th, 2001. My CD and information is now in the national archives for future generations of historians and educators to study! This "When You Look At Me" album is now part of Flight 93's American History!

A new song I wrote called "Share Your Light" has been chosen to be the theme song for National Night Out/ August 2007, in Cheektowaga New York.

Thank you so much for helping me support Essenital Care for Children! Enjoy the music!
