From art to heart, the music of singer-songwriter Lisa Jane Lipkin is soul-searching, unexpected, and captivating.

Biography

Lisa Jane Lipkin is a piano-playing songstress with a rock-meets-folk kind of poetic take on life. Her passionate voice draws you into a melodic, storytelling world that is as unique as it is moving.

Once dubbed a cross between Joni Mitchell & Diana Ross, Lipkin was weaned on the Beatles & Beethoven, cut her teeth on Dylan & Cat Stevens, and was schooled in Ella Fitzgerald and Elton John.

A beguiling performer, Lipkin has opened for Dar Williams, Steve Forbert, Vance Gilbert, Shemekia Copeland, John Pizzarelli, Garnet Rogers, Beatlejuice (with Boston’s Brad Delp), Tom Chapin, among others, in addition to being a featured performer at countless clubs, coffeehouses & concerts.

Her new album is "Flying on Instruments" which she co-produced with producer/composer/musician Richard Martinez (Across the Universe) and features guitarist Peter Calo (Carly Simon), drummers Doug Yowell (Duncan Sheik) and Terry Silverlight (George Benson), bassist Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega) and a cast of talented others.

“Flying on Instruments” reveals Lipkin’s broad range of musical influences and stylistic versatility. She is equally comfortable declaring emotional war in the upbeat opener "I Do Now" as she is tenderly caressing in the ballad “To Begin Again with You.” Lipkin can at once be optimistic and cheerleading in the bluesy rock-rally "Move On," and then turn introspective and deeply compassionate in the penetrating ballad "Change upon Change."

Keen at singing about love and its various gains and losses, Lipkin also aims to raise social consciousness in the passionate appeal “Does Anybody Hear?” Inspired by Kerry Kennedy’s powerful book, “Speak Truth to Power”, the song was written to open the New Hampshire premiere of “Voices from beyond the Dark”, Ariel Dorfman’s drama prompted by the work of Kennedy’s organization “Speak Truth to Power”.

In addition to appearing on many compilations as well as other artists’ recordings (Aksara, Sandi Kimmel & “Women, Spirit, Song”), Lipkin’s songs, compositions and arrangements have won First Place in a New York State Contest for Environmental Awareness and appear in the new Tami Gold documentary “Passionate Politics-The Life and Work of Charlotte Bunch.”

Her debut CD "Raise the Honey" was hailed as “a body full of truth and emotion” and features “Jayme’s Song” (theme song of “Jayme’s Fund for Social Justice, NH based charity). Lipkin’s second CD, "A Prayer for Peace", is a journey through healing music with original songs, prayers and chants inspired by Jewish mysticism and praised as “haunting and beautiful, carefully and passionately put together”.

A Jersey-girl living in New York, Lipkin admits wanting her music to offer something positive and transformational. “I sing about life - up, down or in between - always going for some truth. I think it really does set you free"

More Love

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

Don't be afraid
all is well
everything is love
or couldn't you tell

You're here with me
I am true
and I can feel the love
that's coming from you

And if we share
if we share our love
we can only make
more love

Don't be afraid
I am true
nothing made of love
could hurt me and you

And if we share
if we share our love
we can only make more love

So I put it in a song
it's just a way of touching you
So you can feel safe
I want you to feel safe
feel safe with me
'cause it's love that leads me

Let it be
what will be
tenderness and love
must always be free

Don't be afraid, darling
all is well
everything is love
now can't you just tell?

So come on and share
come and share your love
Together we can make
more love!

Beloved
Lisa Jane Lipkin 2/07

Beloved, they call you Buddha
Beloved, they call you Jah
Beloved, they call you Allah Beloved, they call you God

And all who call you are answered Every prayer is heard
Even in our silent longings you hear every word

And you answer with love,
And you answer with love
You answer with love

Beloved, they call you Brahma
Beloved, they call you the Way
Beloved, they call you Goddess. Beloved, they call you today.

And all who call you are answered Every prayer is heard

Even when we’re bent with sorrow you soar like a bird

To bring us your love
You bring us your love
You lift us with love

We come to in silence
we come to you in song
We come to you when we are weary you lift us up
And you make us strong

With your love
you give us your love
Our strength is your love

By any other name
Your love is the same

And your name is LOVE

Jayme's Song

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

From the heart of a child
with the passion of ages
Came a burning desire
to usher in changes

And we thought you
would change the world
But you wouldn’t let us off so easy
And though we can’t be you
We can try to do some things
you might do

And if we could make
just a small difference
You know we’d try just the same
So we’re gonna try to make a difference in this world
And do it in your name

Through the eyes of a woman
and the soul of an angel
Came a mind for the future
and a sensitive nature

And you left us designs and words
And within them we find inspiration
And though we’d rather have you
We’ll let them guide us toward the dreams you held to

Chorus

And you wanted to change the world
And in your short time
you did more than many
So we’re gonna learn from you
And try to keep those changes
going for you

Tell Him No

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

She says, “I don’t know what I want”
He says, “Let me help you decide”
She says, “I need a little more time”
He says, “Time is on our side”

“Then, how ‘bout a little space”
says she, "to figure out what to do.”
“Whatever it is you want, my love,”
He says, “I’ll give that to you”

How can she tell him "no"
Knowing it would hurt him so?
But deep in her heart she knows it’s wrong, wrong, wrong
To let it go on and on

Mother wasn’t very good
At teaching her to stand her ground
So every time he sings his pretty song
She feels her courage backing down

She doesn’t think it’s in the cards
To have it better anyway
And so she lets him take her hand
And they prepare a wedding day

Chorus/Bridge

Candle light and hair just right,
And flowers for their special night
But she can’t rest, she can’t rest
And in the mirror fully dressed
She sees an angel all in white
saying, “Here’s your moment go take flight”

Left and right and down the hall
She doesn’t pass a soul at all
But sees her shadow on the wall
And says, “God I’ve never looked so tall”

Holy Mother

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

Her mother handed her down a dream
Like her mother before her did
But her heart rose to a different plan
She knew it since she was a kid

Holy mother, doing the best she can
Holy children, surely they’ll understand

Each in his own time, each in her own way
Wandering, wandering, reaching a new day

Now she lies waiting for the bells to ring
to tell her the time is now
She’ll raise the honey and she will sing
And cast her life on a sacred vow

Holy children, playing in the sun
Holy mother, finally your day is done

Each in his own time, each in her own way
Traveling, traveling, teaching a new way

Made of Glass

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

How strange to find you in this strange little town
So far from everything familiar
But there you’re standing holding all my wildest dreams
Melted down into your emerald eyes

And I feel exposed, I feel:

Like I’m made of glass
And you can see right through me
Like I’m made of glass
‘Cause when you smile…I shatter

It’s not the words you’re speaking
but the way you move your lips
That sends a sunbeam searing through my heart
Of course I catch your meaning, ‘cause you mean to take me in
And stupefied I simply fall apart

And I feel exposed, I feel:

Like I’m made of glass
And you can see right through me
Like I’m made of glass
‘Cause when you smile…I shatter

You want me to walk with you, you want me to talk with you
You want me, you want me, you want me, I want you to…no!

I can’t spend this evening, I can’t greet your day
I can’t spend another hour with you
I have a life I’m leading, I have a place to stay
I have a home I need to get home to
Still, I feel exposed, I feel:

Like I’m made of glass
And you can see right through me
Like I’m made of glass
‘Cause when you smile…I shatter

Into pieces on the floor…….Won’t you smile a little more?

Nobody Knows

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

They meet in the quiet corners of his private life
Hidden from the searching eyes of his unnerving wife
A nice man, a fair man, a well-intentioned man

Nobody knows how he longs for freedom
Nobody knows how his heart does cry

She leans in to brush away a hair across his face
tenderness that stills his breath and sets his pulse to race
A good love, a true love, a love they’ll never share

Nobody knows how he longs to hold her
Nobody knows how his heart does cry

He made a vow, he made a pact
Can't walk away, won't turn his back
Obligations, regulations, rules he can't break, risks he can't take

Late at night the moon slips through a tiny curtain crack
Running through the streets of dreams he never once looks back
A whole life, a true life, a full expressive life

Nobody knows how his soul is soaring
Nobody knows how his heart does fly

I Do Now

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

Ooh, I've something on my mind
Gouging me with guilty little thoughts
All the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” time gone by
All the “how I didn’ts” but “I oughts”

Well, you met me in the middle of a sensitive time
And you helped through my riddle with your reason and rhyme
But you left me with a bitter taste, aftermath: no embrace
Could've had compassion

‘Cause I didn’t know what I was doing
I never learned somehow
I didn’t know what I was doing
but oh-oh....

I liked the way you moved and all the things you said
I liked the way you studied my designs
I thought a little coziness would be ok
I guess I’m not so good at reading minds

I was juggling like shiva with my 22 arms
I was struggling to enchant you with my 32 charms
But you didn’t want me anyway
you couldn’t see, couldn’t see, you couldn’t see me trying

‘Cause I didn’t know what I was doing
I never learned somehow
I didn’t know what I was doing
but oh-oh...

Hey yo....etc.

Someone ought to pick you up and set you down
Someone ought to rummage through your head
Someone ought to turn to you and turn around
And walk away from everything you said

As if you were something so special anyway
As if you were something so special anyway
As if you were something so special…..

Anyway, I didn’t know what I was doing
Ok, that’s true
I didn’t know what I was doing
But neither did you

I didn’t know what I was doing I never learned some how
I didn’t know what I was doing
Oh-oh-oh, I do now

Move On

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

For someone with so much to say you’re awfully quiet
You’re holding the big idea but you don’t try it
Digging in the same old dirt for the same old thing
Lift up your head and you might hear tomorrow sing

Look up…Move on
You know all you need to know
Pick up your sweet things and go

What’ve you got to lose come on and tell me
It’s old and tired news you try to sell me
You say that you’ve been hurt, I see that’s true
But truths be told you’ve done some hurting, too.

Follow the sun, follow the stars, follow the wind
Follow the moon, follow your heart, follow the wind
Follow the sun, follow the stars, follow the wind
Follow the moon, follow your heart, follow the wind

Jump on in the stream and let it take you
Let it roll you once or twice, it won’t forsake you
Open your eyes to seek and ye shall find
Nothing you’re looking for has been left behind

Look up…Move on
You know all you need to know
Pick up your sweet things and go

Are You Thinking About Me?

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

I see a man sitting in a room alone…thinking
Good wine in hand, looking at the candles glow…thinking
Wiping a tear, taking a deep breath, holding it all inside
Sinking within, hoping to rise up
Waiting to feel the tide

Are you thinking about me? Just a fleeting thought across your mind
Are you thinking about me? Just a gentle touch upon your heart
Are you thinking about me?

I see a man staring at the telephone, thinking
Why did I run? What was it that frightened me? He’s thinking
But I see so clearly. I, too, was frightened I just disguised my fears
Where are we now? Walking through shadows stashing away the tears

Are you thinking about me? Just a fleeting thought across your mind
Are you thinking about me? Just a gentle brush upon your heart
Are you thinking about me?

Can you feel me thinking about you?

I see a man sitting in a room alone….thinking.

A New Togetherhood

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

Don’t want to talk about the world to come
Don’t want to try to tell you where I’m coming from
I just want to be here, real and true
In this sweet moment with you

Don’t want to stress about it, don’t want to strain
Don’t want to rail against a healing rain
I just want to feel it, real & true
In this sweet moment with you

It’s alright. It’s all ok.
We’re all in this together anyway
It’s ok. It’s all good.
We’re just working on a new togetherhood

It’s beyond just me and you
It’s townships and cities
and by now it’s even countries, too
trying to work out something new
something sweet & real & true

Chorus

Do what you have to to let the moment thru
Breathe a little, cry a little, open up and try a little
Your heart’ll get you through
Hearts know what to do

It’s way beyond our little world of “two”
It’s townships and cities and God bless us
finally countries, too

Chorus

For Me

Written By: Lisa Jane Lipkin

For Me
words & music by Lisa Jane Lipkin

Open up just a little more, little more, little more
Open up like a morning glory
Just a little more

It’s gonna be for me, I can feel it in the wind
It’s gonna be for me, for me

Lighten up just a little more, little more, little more
Lighten up like an angel laughing
Just a little more

It’s gonna be for me, I can feel it in the wind
It’s gonna be for me, for me

Make me a dragonfly - instinct driven
Make me a waterfall that’s tumbling free
Make me a supernova blasting open
Make “me”

Let it go just a little more, little more, little more
Let it go like an evening falling
Just a little more

It’s gonna be for me, I can feel it in the wind
It’s gonna be for me, for me
