Bio

My name is Clara, I'm 24 and a Swedish singer/ songwriter currently living in New York. I'm a one woman band and do guitar-based acoustic music, I usually sing softly but have a few louder songs as well. I've played cafes, bars and a few bigger venues (like Debaser Slussen) in Sweden and now I'm in New York looking for representation and looking to build a fan base. I'm playing open mics every night of the week to get a taste of the music scene and - of course - for practise. Even though I've met some great people at those places I'm now searching for gigs that last longer than two songs (and where the audience isn't entirely made up of other musicians :).

I've called myself Alaska and the Hallelujah choir for over six years, but due to the recent political developments in the States and the Sarah Palin situation I'm not so sure that's a good name anymore...

I grew up on a deserted island in the Swedish archipelago and I think I'm still greatly influensed by my life in the middle of the ocean - beautiful, mysterious, secret, quiet - and very lonely. I've listened to Rickie Lee Jones, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne and Neil Young all my life, but lately I'm more inspired by my travels through eastern Europe; everything from the sunflower fields in Hungary, the old railways, the hostels, to Istanbul and its music scene that for me is so exotic; a clash between Europe, Asia, secularism and Islam. It makes for a pulse you can't find anywhere else and music that is haunting, rebellious and longing, like Duman and Sezen Aksu.
