"Little Buddha Review"

Little Buddha attracted a decent amount of people into Madhatters on what was a musically busy Inverness night – they kept the gaze and ear of the assembled crowd with a mix of stage presence, a rhythmic and captivating sound (credit to the sound engineers for keeping a potentially difficult to manage sound really well balanced) and some damned fine tunes actually!! The set list was a mix of tracks from the beautifully produced songs from the debut album TWISTED and some others that were new and unheard in these parts at least – definate highlights in the set were the opening song titled Karma? and the stripped back and almost ethereal version of Beautiful which demonstrated not only Kat’s unique vocal work, but also the magnificently precise bass rhythm generated by Grant.

It would have been difficult for anyone with an appreciation of musical talent not to have been impressed by this band – they collectively present a well rehearsed and tight band and allied to their trippy rock hop sound were genuinely interesting to watch and listen to – if you missed this superb gig in Madhatters, check out the songs on the link below and without prejudice, listen to something that is pretty incomparable to be honest – it has very clear jazz and dance roots, but is obviously very heavily influenced by the cinematic soundtrack genre – this is music that has very clear evidence of the influences that underpin it, however there is a refreshing uniqueness and honesty that is to be savoured – enjoy!!

A Scottish promoter and label owner known to your correspondent described Little Buddha as being ” Scotland’s best kept musical secret” – on this form, that won’t be the case for terribly much longer Mr Campbell!! - IGIGS

"STOLI TRAVELS ALL THE WAY TO SCOTLAND TO FIND LTTLE BUDDHA"

Little Buddha is a superb band coming from Scotland. They have gained great notoriety throughout Europe but are getting ready to take the US by storm. - Skope Magazine

"Little Buddha Live Review"

One of the best bands to emerge from Scotland in the last decade. People mention Travis, Glasvegas, Mogwai, Wet Wet Wet, The View….LITTLE BUDDHA are next to be mentioned in the same breath. Their sound is designed to make you stand up to attention, take stock of what you have, and leave you in devastating awe…begging for more.

"Little buddha"

Kim Fowley, one of the few producer/svengali's to warrant the term ‘legendary', reckons that Little Buddha are “the next big thing to come out of Scotland… the new Garbage.” Much as we dislike hyperbole, we are forced to agree that he has a point. Though their brand of languorous, slo-mo tripping is far removed from the big-hearted sheen of Butch Vig's outfit, it's propelled by a similar vision. Kathryn McDonald's voice tends toward that of Björk, while behind her wraiths swirl in the fog of a sound that's equal parts Portishead and Talk Talk. That vision we were talking about comes in their determination to update the template, to take a tired old format and breathe new life into it. Garbage did it with pop-rock, Little Buddha have it in them to do the same with Trip Hop.

"LITTLE BUDDAH - The Beautiful EP. Touted as the new Garbage, though I think it's more like Portishead, or an Ennio Morricone soundtrack performed by Massive Attack.

"McStravicks Aural Pleasures"

This week's aural delicacy is Fife's LittleBuddha. They have been called Scotland's new Garbage but that seriously underestimates the power of Kathryn McDonald's truly remarkable voice. No screaming faux angst here but a sensual intonation that offers more than a nod to Marianne Faithful.

The uniqueness of such a great voice gives her the power to take their instantly memorable Dido-esque pop tune ‘Beautiful' to a much more fragile and delicate level. Add to this sweeping Bond-style orchestration and you have one of the most exciting bands in Scotland at the mo.

A stunningly beautiful piece of music.

Bio

Hailing from the darkest hinterlands of Fife, Scotland, Kat McDonald and Grant Tyrie (the nucleus of Little Buddha). A geographic musical anomaly, you may initially pre-suppose, but taking into account the fact that Fife is home to Fence Collective and its myriad roster of critically revered artists, KT Tunstall, The Skids and one of Scotland's first Post-Punk DIY labels (following in the wake of Fast Product, Pop Aural and Postcard), Newtown Products, overseen by Eddie Farrell, ex-husband of Garbage chanteuse Shirley Manson, it becomes apparent there's still something interesting stirring in the old Kingdom to this day. Historically speaking, Fife always housed the ancient capital; musically speaking, Sheilagh Hynde of The Rezillos put it on the international music map, signing to NYC label Sire Records in 1977, whilst adopting the stage name of Fay Fife – which she was incidentally, Dunfermline specifically!
Grant and Kat, a contemporary Robin Guthrie and Liz Fraser in many ways, continue to remain indefinable within a new Fife scene intent on embracing the highs and lows of what followed the demise of The Sex Pistols, and picked up with The Pop Group, Gang of Four and Subway Sect. Embracing a sound and band collectiveness that owes more to Bristol in the late 80's and early 90's, it's no surprise to hear them dropping names like Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky and Jazz legends such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Jaco Pastorius. Taking their name from the Bernardo Bertolucci movie, beats, Jazz, films and their soundtracks provide the palette from which to paint their aural soundscapes.

“We're huge cinema fans and pay particularly close attention to film score and soundtracks and our music has been largely influenced by film score composers such as John Barry, Ennio Morricone, John Williams and Lalo Schifrin. Other influences that drive us have come from the Bristol trip-hop
scene (i.e. Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Portishead and Tricky); American jazz legends like John Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius and Miles Davis ;pop/rock artists like Sigur Ros, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, T-Rex and Blondie.

"We have great admiration and respect for prolific songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon for their imagery and the poignancy of Ian Curtis and Patti Smith”. Grant Tyrie

Following countless plays through their MySpace HYPERLINK "http:// www.myspace.com/littlebuddhaband" www.myspace.com/littlebuddhaband The debut album 'TWISTED' was recorded at The Doghouse Studio near Henley- on-Thames in England and mastered by Ted Jensen, at Sterling Sound in NYC. TWISTED will be released later on this year, preceded by various limited edition singles.

“Kat and I love what we do. An old mentor of mine, this amazing sax player called Tommy Smith, once asked me: 'Do you want to be a musician... or... Do you have to be a musician? If you want to be a musician...... get a day job..... If you have to be a musician then there is no other choice .....' That's what it's like for us.” Grant Tyrie on Little Buddha's
