If you ever find yourself playing in a band with Josh McIntyre, make sure you keep an eye on what he’s doing in his spare time. His shoegaze/garage/noise two-man band Pirate/Rock was originally a side project of a larger band, and now his post-punk solo side project Little Girls looks like it could eclipse the duo just a few weeks into its existence.
“Right after I put the Little Girls songs online, I posted a link to them in the comments section of the music blog Gorilla vs Bear. I came home later on and found that I suddenly had 800 plays and offers coming in from record labels.”
We won’t jinx the buzz by spilling the beans on exactly who’s been calling, but rest assured that some pretty substantial imprints are involved, especially considering that the project didn’t even exist a month ago, and until this moment almost no one knew who was behind it.
If Little Girls does manage to blow up big, this could still be good news for Pirate/Rock, and very good news for the owners of the extremely limited-edition handmade EP they put out this summer. Who knows? Maybe they’ll even consider unshelving the songs they recorded with Ben Cook of Toronto hardcore heroes Fucked Up.
“We really wanted to work with him. He was charging us next to nothing, and he had a great studio. We’d just started writing the songs, and they weren’t really finished. By the end of it we just thought it was terrible, way too rushed. We weren’t ready to record those songs at that point.” - NOW

Little Girls emerged from Torontos post-punk scene as a solo recording project of multi-instrumentalist Josh McIntyre. The songs combine lo-fi post-punk with layers of fuzz to create murky, haunting, and melodic walls of sound.
It all started when Josh, who is a member of the shoe-gaze duo Pirate/Rock, recorded a few songs in his home studio as a side project in early 2009. Seeking the unbiased opinions from friends and musical peers he anonymously posted the music on the internet under the name Little Girls, a name he believed least likely to reveal his identity. He also sent a link to influential music blog GorillavsBear, and within days, the music was receiving thousands of plays and Little Girls getting positive attention from blogs such as The Walrus (Philadelphia), No Pain in Pop (U.K.), Exclaim! (Canada) and Pitchfork (Chicago).
Little Girls sound is driven by youth and nostalgia, says Josh who has been creating and playing music since his early teens. His influences come from the 80s no-wave post-punk scene, and the early 80s golden era of hip-hop. Equally influential are the late hip-hop artist J. Dilla, as well as Can, Joy Division, Wire, and The Clean.
The Tambourine digital EP is being released in spring 2009 on Paper Bag Records, with vinyl releases being handled by Brooklyn labels Mexican Summer and Captured Tracks.
Little Girls backing band consists of Josh on guitar and vocals, Andrew Wilson on guitar, Joseph Roth on bass and Anthony Gerace on drums.
