Bio

Little Joe McLerran is making his third consecutive appearance at the IBC. But it's the first time he's brought the band. The Big Three Trio, Joe's favorite band in Tulsa, is coming with him to Memphis this year. Oklahoma blues legend, Jimmy Jr. Markham on harmonica, Ron McRorey on drums and Robbie Mack on bass, have all thrown their cards in with Little Joe. The third time's the charm.

In 2005 Little Joe won the IBC competition held in Oklahoma City sponsored by the Oklahoma Blues Society. Out of a field of a dozen acts that included several bands, some with horn sections, all the way down to that one guy, brave enough to get up there all by himself. At the 2006 IBC, Little Joe performed in Memphis at the Blues Hall. Great show! The next year Little Joe entered the IBC through the Blues Society of Tulsa. He won the solo / duo competition and performed at the King's Palace, IBC 2007.

Little Joe performs festivals and club dates year round, as a solo or with a band. Joe's favorite band is the Big Three Trio and you'll find them gigging all around Tulsa. Jimmy Jr. Markham, harmonica player for the Big Three has been a fan of Little Joe since he first saw Joe perform as the opening act for his own, Jimmy Markham Band. Jimmy, inducted during 2006 into both the Oklahoma Blues and the Oklahoma Jazz Halls of Fame, was quoted in the paper saying, "These kid's got something. I dig it". Jimmy was plugging Little Joe's upcoming performance at the 2001 Oklahoma Blues Festival as Son Piedmont and the Blues Krewe with Joe's younger brother Jesse on washboard.

Little Joe's musical style has developed over the years but his roots in the old East coast Piedmont style is alive and well. After Washboard Jesse's unexpected death Joe worked with a number of drummers, and in Tulsa there is no shortage of great drummers. Tulsa drummer Ron McRorey had been keeping the Jimmy Markham Band honest for years. Ron loved the funky, syncopated rhythms of Little Joe's songs and got on board when ever possible. It was only natural that when Jimmy Markham came over, Ron McRorey was already there.

Robbie Mack, the Big Three bassist, has been with Little Joe a long, long time. He's been to Memphis with Little Joe before. He's been all over the place with Little Joe, but he's real excited to be headed back to Memphis with Little Joe and the Big Three Trio.
