Bio
Its safe to say that when Jon, Maz, Ben and Dan, singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer in Little Man Tate, first got together under a year ago, they couldnt have been prepared for what lay ahead.
Then, they were four lifelong friends from Sheffield whod spent their teens playing football, drinking and chasing girls together, in thrall of the sounds of Pulp, the Roses, the Pistols and Blur who formed a band for the simple pleasure of playing gigs.
Now, twelve months on, theyre still four lifelong friends from Sheffield, still chasing the good times together, but on the verge of something a little but special. The gigs are getting bigger and bigger, selling out in less and less time; the clamour for their debut single The Agent saw all 2000 copies sell out in no time at all and with new single What? What You Got? and a debut album on the horizon, soon therell be no more driving through the night from gigs to make it back in time for morning shifts at work.
Like all great bands, Little Man Tate are a gang, possessed with a hedonistic, good time ethos that bonds the four together. They formed through genuine friendship rather than through classified ads in the back of the music press, all playing Sunday league football together and writing songs in Jons bedroom. Theyre as much at home on the terraces of Hillsborough (Jon and Ben) and Bramall Lane (Maz and Dan) as at the bar in The Boardwalk (where Jon worked in the box office). And from humble, everyday surroundings they make extraordinary music.
Youve got a funny mind, youre a little bit twisted: singe Jon on the bands debut single. Hes a fine one to talk, seeing as Little Man Tates repertoire of twisted pop deals with everything from cross dressing football hoolies to bisexual threesomes. Its this glammed-up kitchen sink observation, married to unashamed melody that has seen Little Man Tate converting the masses across the land. Tracks such as next single What? What You Got?, Young Offenders and Court Report have already become word of mouth classics.
After a handful of early gigs, a buzz quickly built around the band, first around Sheffield and the surrounding area by word of mouth, and then much further afield via the bands website (www.littlemantate.co.uk) and Myspace site (www.myspace.com/littlemantatemusic.com). In no time at all, gig attendances doubled, then tripled, and Little Man Tate found themselves receiving plaudits from The Guardian to Rolling Stone. They then headed out on a nationwide Club NME tour and the reception they received was spectacular, resulting in a sold out Academy tour in January. When their debut single The Agent was released in February, the scramble for it was unprecedented and all 2000 copies sold out in days.
Little Man Tate are currently in the studio, putting the finishing touches to next single What? What You Got? and their as yet untitled debut album. Theres also the small matter of a headline UK tour throughout April and May which saw shows at Londons 100 Club and Sheffields 1200 capacity Plug sell out in a day.
Little Man Tate chose their name because the films about a boy whos little and clever. Were not little and were not clever. Its ironic. We just love to play our music live. Unassuming to the end, maybe soon Little Man Tate will realise just how special they are.
