Bio

Cinematic, atmospheric, textural, analogue, lo-fi, ethereal.....

Whereas description of music often, or indeed most of the time, may be an exercise in futility, one thing that you can be assured of when it comes to the music of littlestar is that it is undeniably genuine.

Dreamt up and aspired towards through much of his teens and young adulthood, littlestar is primarily the product of the imagination of Ben Timmis. Whilst playing and recording with many of Australia's hardest working independent bands, including seminal intellectual hip hop act the Fuglemen, and currently acclaimed rock band Silver Night Drive, littlestar has always been a less self conscious side project of sorts, a chance to write songs and create music for the sake of it.

But this is not some sort of intentionally anti-commercial, pretentious musical act (although perhaps having named the band many years ago after a Latvian radio telescope you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise). It is pop music created to charge the imagination; evocative and distant, yet familiar. Sounds of the future as guessed at from the past? Perhaps, if you think some little throw away phrase like that works.

There are many direct and indirect influences floating in littlestar's sound; whether it be Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, DJ Shadow, Air, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Split Enz or Radiohead. While many bands consider themselves eclectic, littlestar genuinely explore diverse methodologies; songs vary in form and approach, whether it be sweeping synthesiser strings, echoes and the most basic of quaint drum machine patterns, or broad scale guitar volume and machine gun live drumming. Along with the innovative bass playing of longstanding band member Peter Hillman, the addition of new drummer Ian Kitney, of Tim Rogers & the Temperance Union and RTM, will soon take littlestar to new heights.

But hopefully what makes this verbose description redundant is the music. While done at an independent demo budget in many locations, the attention to detail and sound has been as uncompromised as possible. A good time to stop reading and have a listen.
