"The Blues Room # 333 LITTLEWOLF"

Every now and again I get sent to me a real fine CD from somewhere in this big world of ours. A few weeks ago that didn't happen, oh no, I didn't get one fine CD I got TWO!!! Thought you should hear what I've just discovered. Firstly, LittleWolf featuring Kristi Bess Clanton and Steve Lott. A great blend of sophistication and raw blues energy. And secondly, the best of The Steve Lott Band - rockin' good blues thats sure to hit the spot! The opening acts are great on this episode too!!! Your moneys here people or you do have a hole in your soul!! : )

"Kristi Bess Clanton, announces her arrival—and impressively—on this sampler. A singing star since childhood in Texas, she has blossomed into a great slide-steel guitarist and songwriter for LittleWolf. Her voice is simply spectacular. She can handle anything from a traditional blues shout to a heartbreaking ballad with the ease of a true artist. Tough as overdue rent or smooth as 20 year old bourbon…she can kill you with one note.

"…Steve Lott is the other principal singer/writer/guitarist in LittleWolf. Having toured the world extensively and released two award winning albums in Australia in 1999 and 2001, he came home to Texas to work with Kay Kay Greenwade (Kay Kay and The Rays) and Johnny Rawls in 2004. In 2009, after returning home from yet another two year road trip to New Zealand and Australia, a chance meeting between Clanton and Lott sparked off what is now LittleWolf. A new band. "Kerns: Magazine Nominates Lubbock Recording Act LITTLEWOLF for Best Debut Artist"

Meanwhile, closer to home... Good news has been received by Lubbock duo Littlewolf, whose key members are Kristi Bell Clanton, vocals and lap steel guitar; and Steve Lott, guitar and vocals.

Editors at Alternate Root, a national Americana music publication, announced Saturday, March 23, that Littlewolf has been nominated in the magazine’s annual readers’ poll for Best Debut Artist of the Year.

There most likely are five nominees in this category, although Clanton indicated Wednesday, March 20, that the only competition she had thus far confirmed are New Orleans blues/blues-rock band The Royal Southern Brotherhood and Austin-based independent rockers Uncle Lucius.

Littlewolf released its self-titled, debut album in October 2012. It was recorded at Lubbock’s Mount Vernon Studios; Lott produced and Jon Taylor engineered.

Lott also has several solo recordings to his credit.

Bill Hurley, editor of Alternate Root magazine, told Clanton, “Anyone can vote as many times as they like. Not just subscribers. It all goes through the website (thealternateroot.com).”

Clanton, 22, added, “Bill Hurley said he would leave the voting open for a week or so. Last year, more than 30,000 people voted.

“But this is the first year they have had a Best Debut Artist category.”

Naturally, Clanton pointed out, “I believe fans decide who wins. We’re asking our community to rally together and vote for us.”

I described Littlewolf as a duo, but Lott and Clanton add musicians for their live dates, or at least try to.

Clanton said, “We have a revolving door of very talented musicians who are in the band. When we play Texas dates, we use Lubbock musicians Sean Frankhouser on bass and Kris ‘Tugboat’ Killingsworth on drums. We’ve also used Danny Darling of Fredericksburg on drums, as well.

“When we are touring in New England, we use Berklee grad Ted Armstrong on keyboards, Bill Frietas on drums and Scotty Monette on bass. These three guys hail from the Boston area.”

Littlewolf just completed a string of Lubbock dates, and the next two weeks find Lott and Clanton traveling to Colorado, including a date at Boulder’s Outlook Hotel, followed by shows in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut.

The website for Littlewolf, at littlewolfmusic.com, describes the ensemble’s music as a “unique, dynamic roots/blues/rock explosion.”

Pebbles Wadsworth, former director of performing arts centers at UCLA and the University of Texas, wrote, “I have heard many bands in my lifetime, but never like the unique blend of voices and lyrics as those of Kristi and Steve. Their artistry will take you to another plane. Steve’s guitar-playing is as though he was born with that ‘silver’ guitar in his arms.

“And Kristi’s voice equals that of Bonnie Raitt. For sure, Littlewolf will be a household name soon among musicians, and then beyond.”

Still, I was wondering how Littlewolf came to be noticed by Alternate Root.

Clanton recalled that Hurley “got wind of us while we were on tour in New England in September and October 2012. He invited us to do a live, in-studio taping of four songs at the Alternate Root Studio in Boston. Two of them can be found on their website.

“This (the award) wasn’t something we submitted to. We were chosen by the magazine, and then the people (readers, fans, etc.) will select the winner.” - William Kerns

"LITTLEWOLF Returns to New England"

Last year, the Worcester music scene was fortunate to have experienced an up and coming blues band when Little Wolf headlined Wormtown Brewery’s Oktoberfest at Jillian’s.

After extensive recording and touring in the months since its last stop here, the band is back in New England to start its new tour. Little Wolf fashions a unique, dynamic roots/blues/rock explosion: a fusion of Steve Lott’s 35 years of experience and Kristi Clanton’s youthful exuberance. Bred in West Texas, Lott is a principal singer/writer/ guitarist in the band. Lott has toured the world extensively and released two award-winning albums in Australia in 1999 and 2001.

Just last year, his compilation CD, Blues from Down Under, was No. 13 on the Living Blues Australian Radio Chart. Clanton, the other principal singer/writer/guitarist, has been a singing star since childhood in Texas. She has blossomed into a great slide-steel guitarist and songwriter. At 22, she can handle anything from a traditional blues shout to a heart-breaking ballad.

Tough as overdue rent or smooth as 20-year-old bourbon, Clanton can kill you with one note. This Texas blues sensation was well received on 2012’s Down Under Tour. The tour began with the Blues at Broad Beach festival, one of Australia’s iconic blues fests. The band made additional appearances in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. In the fall of 2012, Little Wolf was a part of the Brother’s & Sister’s Americana Tour of New England.
