"The Road to Glory"

When Live on Brighton looked for a name for their four-piece rock band, they didn‘t have to look far.
The band, with a long “i” in their name, as in “alive”, actually live on Brighton Road.
One thing that isn‘t confusing, though, is that they play their own brand of punchy, melodic, power pop music, and in the short time they‘ve been together, they‘ve done well for themselves.
Live on Brighton is comprised of bassist Harrison Crerar, guitarists and vocalists Jeff Fero and Tanner Heerschop, and drummer Kris Scott, all in their early or mid-20s except Scott, 19. Taking their cues from bands like Blink 182 and Green Day, they‘ve made a name for themselves locally and have big plans afoot for the future.
It‘s true, three of the members, Crerar excepted, are room mates in a house they share, and practise in, on Brighton Road in Rutland. As far as the band‘s name, that was easy enough.
“We play pretty loud and we‘re live on Brighton all the time,” joked Scott. “We‘re (playing) live for our neighbours, who just love it.”
“And we‘re working on getting Harrison into the laundry room,” quipped Heerschop.
While coming up with the band name was simple, the road taken to get to that point was little more involved,
beginning in 2003.
“We were in a band before in Lethbridge, in his (Feros) mom‘s basement when were in our early 20s,” explained Heerschop. “Then we got this idea that we wanted to record stuff, so we had some really crappy drum machine and we recorded it through a Sony Handycam and then into a stereo . . . it was just a big mess.
“We recorded over, what tape was it? Cold as Ice by Foreigner, I think,” Fero added.
According to Fero, that was around 2005, but the seed of Live on Brighton came a little later, after moving here to attend the Centre for Arts and Technology for recording arts in 2007. He met Scott and played with him in another band, Last Day of Labour, for a short time. It wasn‘t until this past September, however, when Heerschop moved here himself that Live on Brighton became a reality.
“I came out here just for the band,” he said. “I‘m a plumber, but I was going to wait until I got my journeyman ticket to come out. I kept telling Jeff I would come, but it just got postponed. So as soon as I got the ticket, I moved.”
Still without a bass player, the trio didn‘t let that stop them and got to work recording a four-song EP with songs from Fero and Heerschop, including their debut single Kaleidoscope. Written by Heerschop when he was still back in Lethbridge, that song and the others produced by local Adam Wittke showcase their upbeat, powerful-yet-melodic and accessible style.
They were finishing up recording those songs released under the title Octaves and Whoas, when, still without a bass player, Fero conscripted Crerar through the internet to handle that just a few months ago.
Once he was on board, though, things happened fast.
“He sent me a couple of songs and I just learned them,” said Crerar. “I was quite blown away with it. I joined these guys on a Saturday, recording by Sunday and then by Wednesday we‘d been signed to (Australian label) Savvy Muzik.”
Relying on their original self-penned material, Live on Brighton set to work putting together their material to play live and things obviously clicked for them. With record company in place, they played their first show in early November in front of some 200 people at Flashbacks in Kelowna with Redfish and Subterrealis, and it‘s for the most part been full-speed ahead since then.
“That was crazy nerves,” admitted Heerschop.
“There was a lot of pressure on that show,‘ echoed Fero. “It went really well though and they said they‘d have us back anytime. We tried to keep the crowd in it.”
But Live in Brighton made it through that show with flying colours, jitters and all, and they‘ve played several more times since then in the Valley. But bigger things are coming their way and they‘re set to embark on 10-day tour that will see them head to Edmonton and back, beginning
Feb. 11 with a show at Doc Willoughbys in Kelowna.
They are also releasing a full-length CD sometime in
early spring, made easier by their living arrangements.
With management in place, their next step is to get a booking agent on board. In the meantime, Live on Brighton will remain living on Brighton, where despite the fast pace of their careers so far, there can still be some peace to be found.
“Basically, when the bedroom doors are closed, you just leave them the hell alone,” said Heerschop. “But if you‘re out in the living room, you‘re fair game.” - eVent Magazine

"Building an empire"

Beer fueled and all inspired are the boys from the bridge. Two modest guys, from modest upbringings, shooting for the stars.

Since forming in 2003 under the stage name "Open to Closure" Jeff Fero and Tanner Heerschop have been pumping out tracks in the studio and playing shows all over Western Canada. The boys have relocated to Kelowna, where they are writing for their official debut album, “The September Project” which has no shortage of catchy hooks and memorable melodies.

The boys bring the perfect balance of showmanship and talent to every stage they share, and they are prepping for the onslaught of support touring to begin September 2010. This band is a few good friends doing what they love, and it shines through.

All promotions are in the works and being withheld for a full-scale attack this September, along with the debut album “The September Project” so keep your ear to the street, and definitely check the guys out when they hit up a venue near you this fall!
