"Album Review: "The End of Ideology""

LIVEVIL - The End of Ideology
(Independent)

Finally! A band that likes Pantera, but not enough to be a shitty quasi-cover band! Livevil's "The End of Ideology" does owe a wee bit of it's sound to the Cowboys From Hell, (i.e., the vocalist's classic Phil one, two combo of roaring/screeching, or the machinegun double bass roll heard in every other song) but not so much that they have problems retaining their identity. Livevil sounds like Livevil. And let me tell you, Livevil sound fucking good! Every member seems to carry their weight throughout the entirety of this album. The vocalist harmonizes well with the mood of each song and adds his own bit to the "Phil roar" (which, in my opinion is ten times better than that windy old hack's). It actually kind of sounds like a Phil Anselmo/Corey Taylor hybrid scream/growl. The guitarist, on an entirely different hand, is well on his way to becoming a fucking guitar god! Not a single riff or solo had me even thinking of yawning! His talents are showcase best in the title track and POW. I also love the bassist's funky lines he drops in just the right places (especially in POW. Fucking awesome man!), keeping it fresh. And last but not least, the lyrics. It's great to know that these guys aren't idiots! Each song is a meaningful sonnet or malice latent threat to the opposition! In summary, Livevil are a band to keep you eyes and ears on. (Note to Ruined Faith: This is how it's done!) - :) CS - E-Metal Webzine

"CD Release Show Review"

Last night, the Elks lodge was host to one of the best damn shows I have seen in a long, long time. There were around 300 people in attendance for 3 local bands, can't remember the names of the first 2, but headlining was Livevil. It was drummer Nick Page's final show with the band. And what a show. The band was really tight, hitting every note on time and hitting them HARD. Hutch murdered the mic and, I'm sure, several people in the front row. Tyler Usko made sweet, dirty love to his guitar, mean muggin his face off. Bassist Ben rocked, and Page was flawless.

Unreal energy in the crowd, crazy pit (got elbowed in the head a good couple times which was good) and an amazing light show operated by Bryan Arnold using of a series of power strips he would turn on and off by hand. Really quite impressive.

I got it all on tape. REALLY good footage. Even got some shots of some boobies. So keep your eyes out for the finished product on this one. You will want to see this.

Thanks to everyone that showed up, all the bands, and the bouncers that had my back in the pit, saving my camera. I had a blast.

"Fact resembles fiction for local guitarist, band's rise"

Fact resembles fiction for local guitarist, band's rise
Tyler Michael Usko and his band, Livevil, have cut an album, which comes out this weekend.

By KIRSTEN TELANDER for the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin

WALLA WALLA -- The story of guitarist Tyler Michael Usko, who goes by Usko, and the release of his band, Livevil's first CD, "The End of Ideology," reads like the conflict-crisis-resolution model of any successful work of fiction. As a work of nonfiction, however, the saga of the release, set for this weekend, serves as the basis for what it means to live in, not just Walla Walla, but the world, as a rocker.

The story reads something like this:

A father at 18, Usko started the band right before his son, Kaiden (now almost 4) was born, while working on the night crew at Safeway. The drummer, Nick Page, left for Chicago with his girlfriend, who joined the Army right after the band put together a demo.

Hours of guitar tracks and vocals were lost in a computer crash. Usko was going to leave town. Page came back to town after a divorce and wanted to re-record songs they had done before just to have an album. Usko stayed, but the band's singer left town after Usko said he found love letters written to Usko's girlfriend.

"We needed vocals, and this big, tattooed guy approached me on the street," Usko recalls. "I thought he was going to beat me up, but instead, the guy said 'Hey, I played with you in a band when we were 16.' Tyler Usko and the Cool Cats. I didn't recognize him. He was this small skinny guy back then, but he'd come back from the Army totally transformed. We had a singer - Matt Hutcherson."

The next day, the band got back together, eventually bought an RV and were going to tour the East Coast. Then Hutcherson went through a divorce and Page got a good job and quit as drummer.

And through it all, a CD was finally born, after four years of loss, love and lifestyle changes. The tracks were recorded in Page's basement, Usko's living room and at bassist Ben Grandstaff's house.
"Ben's father turned the living room into our practice space with the computer, amps... everything," Usko said.

Fittingly titled, the CD expresses the message that there is no one doctrine that can guide any political or social plan, and pushes for the end of neutral ideas that are unchallenged, the end of an artificial ideal for society, "an end to everything we thought it takes to be self righteous and pure..."

It's not easy to be a rocker, especially in Walla Walla. Though the band doesn't have a local venue, with the exception of a release party Saturday at the Elks Lodge, Livevil has created a loyal fan base, playing in the Tri-Cities -- where it appears at the Battle of the Bands at Ray's Golden Lion -- Yakima and Olympia, with stops in between. The band also plays in Couer d' Alene and Moscow.

FOR YOU INFORMAITON

Livevil will have a CD release party Saturday at 10 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 351 E. Rose St. The show is for all ages; the bar will be open to those 21 and up with ID. There is a $2 cover charge.

The CD, "The End of Ideology" is available at Hot Poop, CD Exchange and Hastings in Walla Walla and Tri-Cities on April 20. For a preview, check out the band's site: www.myspace.com/livevilband. - Walla Walla Union Bulletin
