YOUNG, LOUD AND CANADIAN
Living With Lions - Dude Manor EP
Editorial Intern on 8/3/09 @ 5:32 PM

[3.5/5]

Having already pounded the shit out of the pavement from one end of Canada to the other, Vancouver's Living With Lions are finally ready to unleash the fury south of the border thanks to the backing of Billie Joe Armstrong's Adeline Records. The Green Day connection is a good place to start, as Dude Manor, the band's debut EP (initially released in Canada in 2007), is full of earnest and catchy pop-punk that hearkens back to some of the Bay Area's finest. There's more early Saves The Day and Lifetime than anything else in this fast and furious batch of songs, and while that might sound sonically limiting, the band's energy and creativity within the genre lifts Dude Manor above the hardcore-influenced pop-punk throng. Just wait until their full-length drops. (ADELINE, adelinerecords.net) Sam Sutherland

Make Your Mark
Living With Lions’ first full-length disassociate the comparisons to fellow Canadian melodic-hardcore punks Daggermouth that became commone in reviews of the band’s Dude Manor EP. Thanks to slick tempo changes and an intermittent spouting of dual vocals, the band make their own mark with their debut LP, despite occasionally holding onto that Lifetime-style hardcore backbone (“My Dilemma”). A perfect mix of downbeat emotion and joy overcomes the “he-ey, yeah!”-laden “A Bottle Of Charades” (which should get Broadway Calls fans stoked), while they chorus on should-have-been-the-closing track “Granny Steps” analyzes urban desolation. Although there’s a vaguely cheesy coating on Make Your Mark, the band’s songwriting is crisp, complex and exciting enough to overcome it. (ADELINE: adelinerecords.net) Brian Shultz

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW ‘EM: Constant touring in their homeland has made LWL one of the finest pop-punk bands Canada has to offer. They’re driven by the idealized version of punk-rock-bro camaraderie that Dude Manor personifies, which is how esteemed (and Billie Joe Armstrong co-owned) label Adeline found them. “I got this call at work from a random number, and I thought it was a credit card company coming after me, “ says Brenneman. “So I answered my phone in this super-deep voice so I could [throw them off]. But [I heard], ‘I work for this record label called Adeline. We’d like to put out your record in the States.’ I was like, ‘What the fuck?’ just standing in the warehouse at my job.” –Sam Sutherland

LIVING WITH LIONS
Dude Manor
This six-song CDEP by the Vancouver quintet LIVING WITH LIONS is pretty good. The band have a contemporary melodic "hardcore" sounds that falls somewhere between HOT WATER MUSIC and WESTON. The track "Colors" has a cool outfield meets KID DYNAMITE intro before kicking into high gear and proved to be my favorite of the disc. Good stuff. THis CDEP will also be released as a vinyl 10" by Adeline Records. Fans of the current melodic hardcore sound should check out these guys MySpace page. (RK)

Bio

A decent apartment is not an easy thing to find when moving to Vancouver, so when the soon to be members of Living with Lions moved in to their first Vancouver house, they never expected it would be so pivotal in the shaping of their next year. Having similar interests in music, beverages and fun, the boys and their house soon became known for their ruckus get-togethers and parties. A popular spot for any east Vancouver youth to let loose and have a good time, a title was soon given to the house so many had become familiar with: Dude Manor. Before long, the house-mates turned the basement into a jam space and studio, and the friends quickly found themselves with a solid line-up of songs and deemed themselves Living with Lions.

Leaving the basement behind for the road, August found the band touring through the Canadian Midwest with Smallman recording artists Daggermouth. On their return, the band jumped in to the studio and recorded 7 songs to be featured on their fittingly titled debut E.P, Dude Manor. After winning over a solid local fan-base, the Lions released Dude Manor and enjoyed two successful tours down the American West Coast.

As both the band and the neighbour's noise complaints became more serious, a move had to be made to a proper jam space. After the most epic of parties, Living with Lions moved out of Dude Manor leaving their first chapter behind.
